Westministenders: Its the waiting that kills you

Just waiting.

Talks between Frost and Barnier still unresolved issues. There are rumours but 'all without evidence' (the new in phrase on BBC news tonight) that the UK is waivering.

Less that two months to go.

And there is the small matter of what happens in the US than might influence events.

more agile, engaging, educated and forward looking
Surely 'shapeshifting creep' is shorthand for that?

'agile' and 'engaging' used together do not imply someone you can trust.

^And as far as Bojo's girlfriend how the f* does she get a say in anything?^

I also wondered if Carrie got involved with getting under 5's not included when meeting with another person when she suddenly realised she was stuck with Boris and only Boris for the next 4 weeks?!

DGRossetti · 12/11/2020 11:57

Because now we know the Monarch is not the head of state, we need a "first lady" to go with President Johnson (not that one).

Who knows. Maybe reviving the nuclear industry is the one good thing Boris might leave in his wake ?

FishesaPlenty · 12/11/2020 12:37

I've just heard that freight travelling from ROI to Wales will (or may if required) need to travel to either Warrington or Birmingham for customs clearance before returning to Wales to deliver.

That can't be right can it?

wherearemychickens · 12/11/2020 12:42

It is right, Fishes

FishesaPlenty · 12/11/2020 12:43

FishesaPlenty · 12/11/2020 12:48

That's really quite ridiculous

SabrinaThwaite · 12/11/2020 12:50

@FishesaPlenty

Seems that way.

Peregrina · 12/11/2020 12:51

It is right about the freight. Now it is a pretty straight run along the A55/M56 from Holyhead to Warrington.....but there will be no prizes for guessing what happens.

It's hard to believe that they couldn't find space for a customs shed somewhere in North Wales - it's not the most densely populated part of the country. Perhaps it has come about because the present Government seem to have an extremely poor grasp of geography.

ListeningQuietly · 12/11/2020 12:55

I should be surprised by the customs clearance debacles
but I'm not.
HOW will they stop lorries picking other routes to anywhere and everywhere ?

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 12/11/2020 13:55

Brexit, the gift that keeps on giving.

DGRossetti · 12/11/2020 13:59

Especially considering the Leave sentiment in Wales. Maybe someone should pop into a Kent forum and gloat about how the Welsh escaped a Farage Garage.

It is right.

However I think that lorry drivers WOULD tend to go via Warrington rather than via the roads in Wales because of the quality of those roads.

(Similar to how you'd get to Sheffield from Liverpool via the M62 and M1 rather than taking snake pass especially in winter).

Its not quite as daft as it sounds on the surface of it. However you still have 2 hours drive between Holyhead and Warrington which is problematic from a customs / border control point of view...

Here's another bragging point for Wales ...

www.theguardian.com/politics/2020/nov/12/post-brexit-lorry-queues-could-make-kent-toilet-of-england

Kent could become the “toilet of England” in less than eight weeks unless dedicated loos are provided for thousands of lorry drivers who could be held up in the county for hours by post-Brexit border checks, campaigners have warned.

They say Kent’s main roads and laybys are already littered with bottles of urine and bags of excrement and the problem could become much worse after 31 December.

“It has got the potential to be disgusting,” said Phil Silkstone, a regional official for Unite, which represents many lorry drivers.

(contd)

It would be juvenile and petty to note that as Nigel Farages birthplace, the cosmic justice in Kents suffering might drive a few more unbelievers to church this Sunday.

But I'm going to anyway Grin

Incidentally a casual trawl of these threads would show that I did raise concerns about toilet facilities months ago. So not quite sure WTF has been happening in Whitehall.

RedToothBrush · 12/11/2020 14:12

The idea is that the centralised centre in Warrington covers a large area (down to and including Stoke I believe) and they want enough centres to prevent a backlog at the border but covers a wide enough area.

Warrington has a lot of distribution centres anyway, so its a fairly logical place (bar the fact its on the wrong side of the ship canal for those distribution centres - so you just need a smash on the M6 for it all to grid lock everything up - you get at least 2 a year which result in delays of 3 or 4 hours in rush hour). The road infrustructure around Warrington leaves a lot to be desired at the best of times...

Could you point Unite to the direction of roundabout at the M6/M56 junction and the bottles of piss and rubbish throw out of lorry windows even though there are perfectly good toilets at the lorry park service station 200 metres away for their sole and exclusive use? Its not a lack of facilities thats the problem. Its the fucking disgusting and lazy lorry drivers in large numbers that are the problem....

...no amount of facilities are going to alter the dirty habits of a sizeable minority unfortunately.

The ROI/Wales border hasn't really been on my radar because of the lower vehicle volumes and their alternatives to the land-bridge for EU freight.

I'm really surprised at this solution though, given the space around the A55 across Anglesey.

DGR they very clearly have no local knowledge whatsoever. They've just gone 'oooh Warrington. Distribution centre. Cracking'.

Another London based decision. Its going to be a total disaster in operation to filter that many HGVs to a spot already notorious as a traffic black spot for more than one reason.

On the plus side, come any food riots, I know where the very best place to deploy pitch forks is...

Another day, another government crony systems cockup

England test-and-trace system hit by 'huge' IT problems last month

Given this sits on AWS the only way it would fail on scalability is an implementation/design fault - and of course there is no penalty in the contract for under performance.

FishesaPlenty · 12/11/2020 14:30

However I think that lorry drivers WOULD tend to go via Warrington rather than via the roads in Wales because of the quality of those roads.

The plan for clearance hubs at Warrington and Birmingham is fine - for goods going between (most of) England and ROI. The issue I was highlighting is goods going from ROI to Wales - or to Liverpool from the Birkenhead ferry for that matter.

Imagine a factory on Anglesey having to have their incoming goods from ROI inspected in Warrington?

Ive finally figured out how I'm personally going to benefit from Brexit as a welsh remainer, duty free tobacco will probably be a thing again, all hail the sunlit uplands

Wonder if they realise the port is in wales but warrington is in England - some scope for senedd mischief downstream methinks.

Tories don't recognise the distinction, remember. They think Ireland is in England FFS.
