Just waiting.

Talks between Frost and Barnier still unresolved issues. There are rumours but 'all without evidence' (the new in phrase on BBC news tonight) that the UK is waivering.

Less that two months to go.

And there is the small matter of what happens in the US than might influence events.

@DGRossetti

In fact I listened to 15 minutes of the Nick Clegg interview with Joe Biden (from 2018?) - Biden said he was a real "Anglophile" which was not easy for someone with Irish roots to admit - or words to that effect.

I wonder if any Irish posters could back that up ? Is being an "anglophile" compatible with being proud of an Irish heritage ? I'd say it is, and wouldn't necessarily mean much either way. Whereas Mr. Bidens recent - plain talking - over the GFA are much less ambiguous.

Also, if I were Mr. Biden I would be deeply offended that someone thought "anglophile" was synonymous with "willing to put up with shit from the UK". Which you weren't. So that's OK.

There are no issues whatsoever with being an anglophile and also being proud of your Irish culture, particularly if you are of mixed background as Biden is.

There is plenty to admire about the UK and its culture. There is plenty to criticise about the UK and its culture. It's possible to take note of both and admire the good while still condemning the bad.

I'm only relaying what he said in the interview .
@TheElementsOfMedical

My old girl was a tortoiseshell too. I think their genetic mutation results in an overactive feistiness gene.
That might explain why my tortie tabby girl is a proper gobby little "battle maiden" and happily beats up and bullies her much bigger quiet gentle ginger brother.
Both of them are freaked out by squirrels in the garden. 🤷🏻‍♀️

SabrinaThwaite · 11/11/2020 13:46

Oh yes! Mine used to bully the little Westie across the close - a glare through the french windows had the poor wee thing cowering under the table.

She'd have squirrels for breakfast.

DGRossetti · 11/11/2020 13:49

Nuclear power any one ? Ja Bitte !

www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-54703204

A consortium led by Rolls Royce has announced plans to build up to 16 mini-nuclear plants in the UK.

(contd)

TonMoulin · 11/11/2020 13:50

Sorry @Shrillharridan.
Yiu're rght, I slipped up. I sually ignore that sort of comments (whatever the thread or the person Clav)

Clavinova · 11/11/2020 13:56

TonMoulin
Don't let them bully you as well.

Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon reacted to the story, saying that “The sheer moral bankruptcy of the Tory Brexiteers is on full display today.”

AuldAlliance · 11/11/2020 14:08

Spot the cat pretending to be a squirrel.

The degree of some posters' mauvaise foi is increasing exponentially as the 31/12/20 approaches, I see.

There's a whole field of research waiting to be done on how humour is used as an excuse for basically being deeply unpleasant.

Humour is subjective - you can never guarantee an audience will take a remark in unanimity.

Offence equally received as given is usually a good indicator of sincerity.

On that note, I was intrigued last week, on Mock The Week, when one of the panellists made a joke that would not have been out of place in 1975 about a picture of Jeremy Corbyn in a pharmacy:

Is that the only white pharmacist in Britain ?

Is there any offence there ?

baroqueandblue · 11/11/2020 14:18

Is that the only white pharmacist in Britain?

That's all kinds of wrong Sad

"

The British/English take it to quite special heights..... it's not part of NZ culture and something I - I was going to say struggle with - but it is really I just dislike. It's used as a cover for bullying- excused as "banter". You can have a laugh with someone without resorting to belittling them....

DGRossetti · 11/11/2020 14:24

It was a female Asian comedian that said it.

So now we stray into how much we need to take who tells a joke into consideration. Or not. And what that means for the notion of "equality" as a whole.

DGRossetti · 11/11/2020 14:26

You can have a laugh with someone without resorting to belittling them....

You can also have a huge laugh with someone while belittling them....

Humour is complicated. Starting with what it is to start with ...

HoneysuckIejasmine · 11/11/2020 14:34

Is that the only white pharmacist in Britain ? Shock

In much the same way that black people can use N word and women call each others bitches as an endearment? I'm not convinced that the argument of "reclaiming the slur" can apply to pharmacists though. Hmm

Clavinova · 11/11/2020 14:50

Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon reacted to the story, saying that “The sheer moral bankruptcy of the Tory Brexiteers is on full display today.”

Well ok, Priti Patel didn't specifically mention food shortages then, despite the headline.

"According to today’s article, the UK government report has indicated that there would be a 7% drop in GDP for Ireland, while the equivalent for the UK would be a drop of 5%."

Priti Patel;
“This paper appears to show the government were well aware Ireland will face significant issues in a no-deal scenario. Why hasn’t this point been pressed home during negotiations? There is still time to go back to Brussels and get a better deal.”

One of Nicola Sturgeon's Covid-19 advisors (Devi Sridhar) keeps telling the media we could have copied New Zealand - no thought for the land bridge then - why doesn't Nicola have a quiet word with Devi and point out the difficulties for Ireland in that scenario?

Tanith · 11/11/2020 14:54

"So now we stray into how much we need to take who tells a joke into consideration. Or not. And what that means for the notion of "equality" as a whole."

As demonstrated by the 'Goodness Gracious Me!" team.

Now for myself, I don't get all insecure when being made fun of. I thought that sketch was not only clever, but funny.

WM sweepstake time

will the government reinstate breaches of international law into the IMB
or might sleepy Joe have reminded young Al
that to do so would be very dumb?

I'm going for reinstating them.
Peregrina · 11/11/2020 16:58

I would go for re-instating them. To waffle on about "We won't use them" is nonsensical. With their large majority they could always pass a law when they were needed.

TheElementsOfMedical · 11/11/2020 17:18

I'm going for re-instating too. With a good, blustery dose of "Sov-rin-tee! WillyPeople! BullyingPunishment! Get lost Obama Biden!" as a crowd-pleaser.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 11/11/2020 17:32

Another vote for reinstating.
