The government have FINALLY started to treat no deal brexit and covid as one entity in terms of fucking the economy.

On the one hand you have one camp who think they can sneak No Deal through as a consequence of Covid. On the other you have people who realise that it might be quite a good idea not to doubly screw your entire economy and to continue to be able to import medical supplies freely.

We now no that No Deal Brexit will involve passports to get into Kent and 7 mile queues of trucks because this has passed the lips of Gove. Y'know one of those who has been denying this for the past 4 years and presenting it as 'scaremongering'.

We are now firmly into the end game where businesses have to make plans based on the government plans and technology. Y'know the ones that aren't complete yet despite it only being 2 months to go.

Johnson has today done an interview about covid restrictions in the NE in which he got all the detail wrong. Its almost as if he forgot the lines he was instructed to recite and have no fundamental understanding of what rules he's putting into place to control the lives of the population.

As we lurch into October, there is speculation of full local lockdowns being brought in to try and deal with the spiralling number of cases which have to be the result, in no small part, of a dire lack of local testing facilities in the North of England. Meanwhile we've got The App finally. The one that doesn't work and the police and many health care staff are being advised not to use cos its so bobbins and will lead to them constantly isolating needlessly. Thats just something the rest of us have to contend with.

The feeling is that Cummings is up for No Deal. Johnson has been brainwashed into it, which lets face it, isn't too hard given how hard of thinking he is. However there is a growing sense that Johnson may now bottle it and declare victory in the jaws of defeat. That might be a premature hope.

We await the answer and the all important question of whether Christmas is indeed cancelled - that is for everyone who hasn't already cancelled it due to financial hardship...

Meanwhile, back in New Brexitannia:

Tom Newton Dunn @tnewtondunn

No10 announce Boris Johnson will speak to Ursula von der Leyen tomorrow afternoon. After 8 months of unsuccessful talks, this will most likely be the moment of truth: either one or both climb down and offer a compromise, or no deal it is.

Senior EU diplomats are downbeat about a break through. One I spoke to this week insists they cannot give way on basic union principles, and they worry the PM no longer has the political space to compromise (if he wanted to) after a torrid few months. Let’s see. A big 48 hours.

TheElementsOfMedical · 02/10/2020 09:41

I'd better collate more facts Grin

prettybird · 02/10/2020 09:44

Cue incoming Wink

prettybird · 02/10/2020 09:48

BTW: ds got operated on about midnight. Got to love the NHS! GrinThanks

Seems to be doing well - his appendix was inflamed.

He WhatsApped (by text)?us at 6.15 to say he was ok Smile - and then a whole series of OMGs as he found out about the COVID POTUS Shock. That will keep him occupied for the day Grin

So Boris is now a lame duck.

DGRossetti · 02/10/2020 09:58

@mrslaughan

Wow - we'll it moved on. Anyway Trump - could be lying , who would know. It's bad - I think whichever way it goes
I still have my doubts about Boris' "Covid moment".

I have no idea how US press works, but if I were team Biden I would be offering to postpone the debate myself with a heavy hint that it's out of concern that Donald doesn't upset himself. Then let the Trumpster swing back. They'd also need a plan to deal with Trumps inevitable shit performance being blamed on Covid - pointing out it's not a great thing for POTUS.

Then finally they point across the Atlantic and say: Look ! This is what happens to your country when you let a loser who's had Covid carry on running it ...

they know where to find me.

SabrinaThwaite · 02/10/2020 09:58

Well you already know what the Torygraph headline will be.

Hello Born Thank you.

Love the fact that Putin allegedly said Trump's "vitality, good spirits and optimism" would help him cope with the virus!

It does read as terribly pointed ...
prettybird · 02/10/2020 12:19

He's studying (genuinely Wink) American Politics this semester Grin

Trump's Twitter feed is included in his recommended reading list Wink

Next semester he's doing "Political Campaigning in the digital era".

Interesting times Wink

Trump's supporters never hold him to what he says - fruitfly memory, or maybe fruitcake !

www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-54381848

A week after Donald Trump told Americans not to worry about Covid-19 because "it affects virtually nobody" except the elderly and those with heart conditions,

the president himself has tested positive for the virus.

Good to hear MiniBird had his op so promptly and is doing well.

Another perspective on the impact of Trump’s “illness”, that it could make his chances of winning the election worse Hmm

www.thelondoneconomic.com/politics/with-33-days-to-go-what-impact-will-trumps-illness-have-on-the-election/02/10/?utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook&utm_campaign=sfeu&fbclid=IwAR0ZuZ4xo0DICXTmXOWcFnOd_ziij-DZxRvq4IrwzKGaSLioz_RzKmjDmrQ

I must admit my first reaction was disbelief especially as I had read that as you would expect of a empathy free narcissist, in contrast to his public maskless persona he was paranoid about catching it himself and privately has erected a pretty high wall of infection control around himself. Seems more likely he is posturing to be a COVID hero like Balsinaro, and avoid another debate. Will be interesting to see the reaction when the US wakes up

TheABC · 02/10/2020 13:28

I am going to stick my neck out and say Trump's test probably won't matter.

By this late stage in the electoral cycle, everyone will have an opinion on the incumbent, for good or for bad. Trump is a deeply polarising figure and there don't seem to be many "undecideds" left.

The only caveat is that if Trump dies, you may see a sympathy swing towards Pence.

DGRossetti · 02/10/2020 13:33

I'd be very upset if someone hadn't made some money by spread betting on an official announcement that Trump would "test positive" for Covid at some stage in the electoral cycle.

Thinking about it, not long after the first debate was probably the obvious bet. Gets him off the hook for a shit debate, and out of the next one, with his brain-dead supporters saying that if he had taken part "he'd have nailed it".

Much as it's (now) obvious that Boris had fuck all intention of abiding by the WA, it should be obvious Trump has zero intention of abiding by the election.

Hi there LonelyPlanetMum
Sorry you are having a rough time but good to know these threads are keeping you sane

ListeningQuietly · 02/10/2020 14:25

Re Trump and COVID
Pence has the charisma of a soggy carrot.
He cannot rally the supporters to the ballot box
and as Trump has told Republicans NOT To use postal ballots, that will affect the Red turnout much more than it will the Blue

my suspicion is that Trump will be just fine and say that his lack of symptoms just shows how fit and healthy he is

sadly that will mean his supporters do not take it seriously
and more US citizens will die over the coming months
