The government have FINALLY started to treat no deal brexit and covid as one entity in terms of fucking the economy.

On the one hand you have one camp who think they can sneak No Deal through as a consequence of Covid. On the other you have people who realise that it might be quite a good idea not to doubly screw your entire economy and to continue to be able to import medical supplies freely.

We now no that No Deal Brexit will involve passports to get into Kent and 7 mile queues of trucks because this has passed the lips of Gove. Y'know one of those who has been denying this for the past 4 years and presenting it as 'scaremongering'.

We are now firmly into the end game where businesses have to make plans based on the government plans and technology. Y'know the ones that aren't complete yet despite it only being 2 months to go.

Johnson has today done an interview about covid restrictions in the NE in which he got all the detail wrong. Its almost as if he forgot the lines he was instructed to recite and have no fundamental understanding of what rules he's putting into place to control the lives of the population.

As we lurch into October, there is speculation of full local lockdowns being brought in to try and deal with the spiralling number of cases which have to be the result, in no small part, of a dire lack of local testing facilities in the North of England. Meanwhile we've got The App finally. The one that doesn't work and the police and many health care staff are being advised not to use cos its so bobbins and will lead to them constantly isolating needlessly. Thats just something the rest of us have to contend with.

The feeling is that Cummings is up for No Deal. Johnson has been brainwashed into it, which lets face it, isn't too hard given how hard of thinking he is. However there is a growing sense that Johnson may now bottle it and declare victory in the jaws of defeat. That might be a premature hope.

We await the answer and the all important question of whether Christmas is indeed cancelled - that is for everyone who hasn't already cancelled it due to financial hardship...

There's also talk of Pence self isolating as he's been in close contact with Trump AND Pelosi in case she needs to step in. That would be an interesting turn of events!

mathanxiety · 02/10/2020 06:46

Apparently Jared Kushner and advisors Dan Scavino and Nicholas Luna were all with Trump and Hope Hicks (who has tested positive) on Wednesday at a rally in Minnesota.

Mistigri · 02/10/2020 07:04

Well.

Hope he hasn't given it to Biden (who is careful by all accounts).

borntobequiet · 02/10/2020 07:17

The virus is taking a risk there with Trump. It’s a convenient time for him to get it though. When’s the next scheduled debate?

redavocado · 02/10/2020 07:29

15 October I think. Enough time for Biden to self isolate if he thinks necessary and for Trump to potentially be hospitalised.

Peregrina · 02/10/2020 07:47

I would really enjoy it if Nancy Pelosi ended up being the first woman President by accident, as it were.

TheElementsOfMedical · 02/10/2020 07:50

Apologies for the poor form in re-posting myself, but I just wrote this on the Trump thread and thought maybe it was worth seeing whether the wise Westministenders think similarly:

I've come over all gloomy, but I can't see how this is good news.

(1) If he recovers, he'll be seen as the Superman Messiah by his followers and get an electoral boost.
(2) If he is seriously ill, he'll be seen as the Brave Suffering Messiah by his followers and get an electoral boost.
(3) If he dies, presumably Pence will simply take over as Presidential candidate, he's just as much of a nutjob really. And he'll get the electoral boost of grief-stricken Trumpists and any Republican voters who had been put off voting because they didn't like Trump's shenanigans.
(4) Or (and I'm not usually prone to conspiracy theories, but this seems suspiciously convenient), Trump doesn't really have COVID but is using this to avoid being shown up in debates, plus get the (1) and (2) electoral boost from his followers.
(5) If he does have COVID, he could have spread it to Biden, who is also an elderly man.

RedToothBrush · 02/10/2020 07:55

Convenient timing and tbh theres no good narrative that comes as a result.

It's either only losers die, its just a bit of flu let it rip.
Or an heroic survival narrative.

Or if he does die (which is extremely unlikely especially since treatment has improved considerably since Johnson had it in April) then we have the conspiracy theorists going a bit mental and the election up in the air. His daughter might get the nod and she might do better than her father....

Tbh its the worst news possible at just the wrong time.

I am inclined to believe (4) myself.

I don't know what happens if a Presidential candidate dies.

Sostenueto · 02/10/2020 07:56

Number 4 definately 😁

TheElementsOfMedical · 02/10/2020 07:58

Tbh its the worst news possible at just the wrong time.

That's what I think Sad

Darker · 02/10/2020 08:23

I’m actually quite surprised D & M both tested positive at the same time. They look like social distancing is pretty normal for the two of them.

Darker · 02/10/2020 08:31

Twitter reporting that the ‘Doomsday Planes’ are flying on the East and West coast in case of foreign attack. Apparently standard procedure when a POTUS is unwell.

lonelyplanetmum · 02/10/2020 08:40

First post in many months (due partly to lockdown marital issues) but I've lurked regularly for the most reliable insights anywhere.

Tinfoil hattishly, Is there any percentage chance at all that D&M have an electioneering strategy for a sympathy vote.

It would be weird to remove yourself from the campaign trail -but remember all that evidence from Oz and the U.K. that withdrawing from TV debates etc gave an electoral boost?

Darker · 02/10/2020 08:43

Well his performance in the debate was lamentable. And lying doesn’t seem to bother him unduly

mrslaughan · 02/10/2020 08:43

I agree completely with the last 4 posters.
Elements - I am also not prone to conspiracy..... but Johnson has a huge boost in ratings after he was sick. Lots of Facebook posts of him nearly working himself to death (as if!)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 02/10/2020 08:48

I agree with you all, no good is going to come of this.

lonelyplanetmum · 02/10/2020 08:50

Thinking it's number 4 from the posts up thread.

When Johnson was empty chaired on TV debates and replaced with an ice sculpture I remember reading an article I now can't find. It looked at evidence of how withdrawing from pre election debates boosts chances. It was based on studies used as strategy in Oz elections. The same team were brought in to advise Johnson ?

Songsofexperience · 02/10/2020 08:53

Also, should he still loses, I'm quite sure he'd use it to claim the election results are null and void because he was ill and lost out on a crucial time in the campaign.

mrslaughan · 02/10/2020 09:02

Wow - we'll it moved on. Anyway Trump - could be lying , who would know. It's bad - I think whichever way it goes

borntobequiet · 02/10/2020 09:07

Hi Lonely! Sorry to hear you’ve had a tough time.

I’ve decided to put on the hat of optimism and hope that this latest spanner in the works changes the course of events in a totally unexpected and positive way. Well why not. It’s my day off and I’m determined to enjoy it, even the flu jab I have booked.

prettybird · 02/10/2020 09:26

"Only losers catch COVID" Wink

prettybird · 02/10/2020 09:28

Just to be crystal clear, that is not my mindset, but it is the mindset of the Orange One.
