“In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act.”

Not George Orwell but often attributed to him. But a powerful statement with resonance nonetheless

I've heard indirectly, (from someone who knows someone who works for BA!) that they have been getting rid of people and then re-employing them later on worse terms.

Point of order- Not in large numbers, not yet they haven't.

The story you have heard is the one some Unions (Unite/BASSA/GMB) are circulating and claiming that is what BA are planning to do...

Announcement on the reality of all this possibly next week.

Didn't there use to be a gap before a company could recruit for a redundant role ? 6 months ?

Never ceases to amaze me how many people I've seen made "redundant" whose role was immediate refilled.

(There's a latin term for rights you can't enforce are no rights at all, but I can't be arsed to look it up ...)

Well Deedo Harding (as Starmer called her, proving how posh he isn't) is up before the Health Ctee and seems to know less than the tea lady about anything in the way of testing and tracing.

Peregrina · 03/06/2020 15:57

No! This must be so. I have heard it third hand from someone who works for them, and this was back in January.

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 03/06/2020 15:58

"I'm sorry to say I don't have that information."

This is what an Oxford PPE and a Harvard MBA gives you: The ability to faff and bullshit in an authoritative voice when you know fuck all.

DGRossetti · 03/06/2020 16:08

Well Deedo Harding (as Starmer called her, proving how posh he isn't)

are you insinuating he's never actually read The Aeneid ?!

Quelle horreur !

Sostenueto · 03/06/2020 16:13

I understand the need to protest over what is happening in America but ffs! Thousands on the streets of London no social distancing. Welcome to the second wave of Covid! Or is it selfish of me to think thatSad

notimagain · 03/06/2020 16:17

Ah, OK, so just to be clear, this story you've heard is pre-Covid..so not relevant to today's debate in the HoC..

As far as the impact of Covid on jobs at BA goes the current situation is as I described earlier and I'm not getting that info "third hand"...Halo

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 03/06/2020 16:19

Rather like the boy Gideon, she's actually Mary Diana Harding, and a quick butchers at her biog shows she is posh privilige on a silver stick-in-waiting.

DGRossetti · 03/06/2020 16:19

Alternatively, "project fear" has collapsed for better or for worse Hmm

mrslaughan · 03/06/2020 16:24

SOS - we were headline towards the second wave way before these marches.....

Sostenueto · 03/06/2020 16:25

If the news about BA is not true why would the unions go on tv this morning saying it. What can they gain by putting false news out there? Surely people would condemn them horrendously and it would not do the union any good at all!🤔

mrslaughan · 03/06/2020 16:25

Sorry - I bloody hate autocorrect on my phone - and then Mumsnet won't let you edit posts....

Sostenueto · 03/06/2020 16:28

This weekend just gone here in my village was like high season
The holiday camps are open caravans everywhere, tourists all over ( sigh). So yes you are right mrslaughan

mrslaughan · 03/06/2020 16:34

SOS - I do agree with you. But on social media a certain demographic a laying the blame of the second wave purely at the feet of those protesters. I am not saying they are right to protest in this way, but there's plenty of other stuff going on happening that has ensured the second wave ........ and a lot has to do with the government.
I am hugely depressed by the whole thing and the complete tone deafness of people - who absolutely support this government, in the past have supported Farage - but are posting black lives matter. But as advised on here, I am not saying anything - but there is v definitely a SM purge coming on....... though does that mean I end up in a vacuum?
I don't know....

notimagain · 03/06/2020 16:44

PR/applying pressure/spin (I don't blame them) ..but the situation is the S.188 process at BA started end of April ( not going to check e-mails but I think it was the 28th); Clock runs out I think 15th June. That's the earliest there will be announcement about jobs - anything before that is pure conjecture.

Some Unions are involved in consultations with BA, some have chosen not to be involved..

At least one union has run a fairly heavy campaign encouraging members to cut and paste a slightly misleading e-mail (which also ended up as a post in this place) to all and sundry, which was phrased to give the impression the sender had already been laid off, which is why I queried Perigrina's information.

HTH.

Peregrina · 03/06/2020 16:52

Only in so far as a good crisis must not be wasted, and the current crisis being Covid. Do you work for BA's management notimagain? Because it sounds as though you might do!

As it happens, BAs flights were convenient for us, so I hope the schedule will be restored soon.

notimagain · 03/06/2020 17:17

Very true

Do you work for BA's management notimagain? Because it sounds as though you might do!..

Absolutely * not.

It's funny (sort of) how often that allegation gets made when somebody pops up to point out the facts and is also somewhat sceptical with the role of one or two of the Unions at BA.

mrslaughan · 03/06/2020 17:21

Has Chris Whitty taken a vow of silence?

LouiseCollins28 · 03/06/2020 17:25

Bit surprised to see Boris chose to answer Beth Rigby’s question re George Floyd at the briefing. Not surprised it got asked and probably the least controversial option to answer it as he did.

I thought these briefing sessions were about Covid response, not general political issues tho.

Pepperwort · 03/06/2020 17:30

Will all those Hong Kong residents want to come to the UK? ... However, will people in the UK really want an influx of people who are ethnic Chinese?

The first question is where the heck are they all going to be put. Ethnicity is secondary. The total number I've seen mentioned as eligible is 2.9 million. You cannot even move that number of people across the globe easily. You certainly cannot just plonk them down in Britain, where we already have an acknowledged shortfall of 1 million homes. Sort that out first, and if we manage that small miracle sorting out the cultural and language conflicts will be easy.

mrslaughan · 03/06/2020 17:31

Oh - he's found his voice..... interesting....

OldLace · 03/06/2020 17:33

Well, {drum roll} after 2 emails and 10 days waiting, I got my reply from my MP, (who is a member of the Cabinet).

In my email to her I had included a number of personal details about my situation with my children, which compares unfavorably to the Cummings in terms of support re the children should a parent fall sick (ie I am disabled, single and both my kids have SN and SEN).
I pointed out that I had 'managed' within the Govt rules, like others.
The main part of my email however was about Boris Johnson's response to Cummings situation - I clearly said that 'regardless of what Mr C did or didn't do it was Johnson's response that bothered me and that as a previous Conservative voter, I was very put off voting Tory again. I asked her to forward a final short separate para to BJ directly, (which contained a qu. needing a reply). I also sent this to Downing St and Conservative party HQ (which I didn't mention to her)

The reply is below:

Good afternoon,

I am writing in reply to your email about Dominic Cummings. I have received many emails from my constituents about this issue. Some in support of Mr Cummings, some very much against him remaining in post and many in the middle or undecided about it. Many of you will have seen the statement Mr Cummings gave at the weekend, which set out his position and corrected some details that have been outlined in the press.

I am not sure that what I have to say will change anyone's position. Nor am I in a position to answer some of the very specific questions about Mr Cummings' personal circumstances that many of you posed. But I want to assure you that I will always be your voice to Government, as well as being a part of Government. While I may not speak publicly on some matters, I will always convey your views privately and I have conveyed the strength of feeling on this issue.

Many of us are dealing with unimaginable situations. Many of us have had to make sacrifices. Many of us have lost loved ones. And all of us fear what might happen to those around us if they or we become ill. People have understandably asked me to help them interpret the guidance, where they have been unsure how to apply the guidance to their own circumstances. I have always advised people do all they can to follow the guidelines, to respect social distancing and to ensure the safety of their families and neighbours. I promise to always try to do the best thing for you, communities across the constituency, and our country. And I know that is the Prime Minister's utmost priority too. I trust the Prime Minister and I stand by him and the judgements he is making.

I have been getting on with the task at hand - doing all I can to support local people and businesses through this difficult time, as well as speaking with my opposite numbers in governments around the world, focussing on the best - and fastest - route to find a vaccine, and ensuring that we are boosting critical supply chains in the UK and around the world.

I fervently hope we can come together as a community to continue the hard work we have all contributed to in combatting this virus.

What do we think of that? Not worth 10 days 'consideration', imo...

pussycatinboots · 03/06/2020 17:40

DH reckons they're worried that there's already a 2nd peak brewing - particularly Sir Patrick and Prof Chris attending with the blithering idiot in the middle.

OldLace she offered you no practical help. Sounds a very generic reply.
