Westministenders: Reployed back to No Deal Planning

Now Covid-19 is over (yeah I know right) lots of civil servants who were switched from brexit no deal planning to covid-19 planning have been switched back to their original remit.

For some reason this doesn't exactly fill me with confidence.

We've also seen yet another doubling down on the EU not being flexible and how they need to make a deal. And lots of rhetoric about being serious about no transiton planning.

Remember we have something of a deadline looming at the end of next month.

So before we are even out of this crisis, the government have lost interest. Today's press conference was an eye opener - Van Tam openly said that the time taken to get test results was too long and wasn't good enough yet and meant track and trace wasnt still operational despite it being such a crucial factor in being able to go into the next phase as planned on 1st June.

Another deadline we won't make - the Manchester Nightgale still has patients and the local authorities in the NW are going mental. So the government is playing more silly buggers over blame and villianising the evil workshy teachers. Noting the government guidance for teachers on how to teacher children at home says fuck all and the guidance on reopening schools makes a Theresa May dog ate my homework style document look positively well thought out, in terms of practicality. (Not even going to touch on the question of whether its safe - the whether its workable one is more important).

I guess that means things are getting back to normal at least.

A recession looms, but workers rights are now fair game and fully in the government cross hairs - as we see from a lack of PPE for the 'heroes' and the attacks on the teachers. As well as the carers who were sold down river. That'll be the ununionised carers...

Taking back control.

In the same way enormity has just come to mean enormous instead of a huge crime.

DGRossetti · 22/05/2020 14:05

When language becomes unclear, you can only judge by actions.

mrslaughan · 22/05/2020 14:07

I hadn't realised that Sweden's herd theory approach was about preventing the second wave........ is that an added bonus to his approach?
It kind of ignores the long term health effects ...... a bit like why we haven't looked to herd immunity for polio.....

A couple of weeks ago there was a news item I saw on Sweden (channel 4 maybe?) where they interviewed a whole lot of people - including a family, teenage kids. All supposedly recovered but 2 still had lung issues they were hoping would go away. Teenage son worst effected. Problem with scarring on the lungs - is it doesn't go away.

mrslaughan · 22/05/2020 14:12

DH feeling is the uk is essentially moving to the Swedish model of dealing with it....hoping herd Immunity gets us somewhere....
I suppose at least the Swedish government is being honest with its population...... whereas here it the whole got out/don't go out / stay alert/...

From what I understand there is some shielding in Sweden for the at risk groups. And that has been clearly communicated. Not so much here.

Jason118 · 22/05/2020 14:14

We've never left the original strategy, let's look at the evidence.....

AuldAlliance · 22/05/2020 14:37

Thanks for your purposeful language feedback.

Re changing language - I've finally given up on "hopefully" after over 30 years of trying to use it correctly! Grin

...sometimes you have to accept that language changes - awful Wink as that is to the pedants amongst us Grin

TatianaBis · 22/05/2020 14:41

Sometimes it's about the destination. Sometimes it's about the journey. And sometimes it's about appreciating the difference.

😂 yeah the covid journey is great. Just enjoy the ride.

BigChocFrenzy · 22/05/2020 14:45

I would write:

'they purposefully purposely sent covid patients to care homes' =on purpose

BigChocFrenzy · 22/05/2020 14:46

because imo

'they purposefully sent covid patients to care homes' = with determination

BigChocFrenzy · 22/05/2020 14:48

Probably what happened is:

'they purposely and purposefully sent covid patients to care homes' = the did it on purpose and were determined to do it

TheUser420 · 22/05/2020 14:53

Seeing the "B" word made me think this should go here.

(To be honest I thought I had posted it when I commented before ... I guess my paste buffer was empty Grin)

cannabisindustryjournal.com/feature_article/the-british-isles-sees-cannabis-as-an-economic-development-pathway/

Cannabis as a tool of local or even regional economic development has rapidly gained traction in many jurisdictions within the United States and Canada. It has also caught on particularly in the poorer states of the EU (see Greece) and those countries hoping to enter the Union (North Macedonia).

These days, the concept is also spreading even to the UK, where reform has lagged significantly behind other countries both in North America and Europe. Indeed, two island communities are now investing heavily in the idea that cannabis is not only here to stay, but may invigorate communities and the economic health of islands looking for a new path, post-Brexit.

WASHINGTON—Putting the nation on alert against what it has described as a “highly credible terrorist threat,” the FBI announced today that it has uncovered a plot by members of al-Qaeda to sit back and enjoy themselves while the United States collapses of its own accord.

Multiple intelligence agencies confirmed that the militant Islamist organization and its numerous affiliates intend to carry out a massive, coordinated plan to stand aside and watch America’s increasingly rapid decline, with terrorist operatives across the globe reportedly mobilizing to take it easy, relax, and savor the spectacle as it unfolds.

“We have intercepted electronic communication indicating that al-Qaeda members are actively plotting to stay out of the way while America as we know it gradually crumbles under the weight of its own self-inflicted debt and disrepair,” FBI Deputy Director Mark F. Giuliano told the assembled press corps. “If this plan succeeds, it will leave behind a nation with a completely dysfunctional economy, collapsing infrastructure, and a catastrophic health crisis afflicting millions across the nation. We want to emphasize that this danger is very real.”

(contd)

Peregrina · 22/05/2020 17:36

I don't care what Priti Patel says - I doubt if we will ever lead the world in travel and tourism. It might bounce back but even that will take a few years!

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 22/05/2020 17:36

She's quarantinin people now.

What about all these folks off the rubber boats in Dover, do they all get single rooms at the Holiday Inn?

Piggywaspushed · 22/05/2020 17:37

I probably know the answer already, oh wise ones, but why are NONE of the press reporting this, save The Guardian. It's HUGE news:

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 22/05/2020 17:40

....hang on these exemptions to the quarantine rules, to be published later, they don't have to quarantine because they're special?????

I'm gussing there'll be a minimum salary for that.

Spare a thought for the Tory party ...

The UK Conservative party is struggling for funds during the coronavirus crisis and is eyeing plans to reduce staffing levels at its central office in Westminster. Senior Tories told the Financial Times that Boris Johnson’s party was facing a “massive downsizing” of its operations due to a combination of economic uncertainty, plans to decentralise operations and the typical drop-off following a general election. A senior Conservative party figure said: “CCHQ [Conservative Campaign Headquarters] is really struggling for cash at the moment and they’re looking at making lots of people redundant, not even furloughing them.” One influential donor said he had been approached by the party in recent weeks to raise funds to keep CCHQ afloat, but questioned whether it was necessary. “I told them that it makes no sense at this point. They should freeze all campaigning and re-engage for the May 2021 elections sometime in September,” the individual said. Another well-placed Tory confirmed “donations had dried up” since the lockdown began in March.

One of the party’s fundraisers said there was also disquiet among donors due to the delay in appointments to the House of Lords. “Boris promised peerages to the likes of Peter Cruddas and Michael Spencer, yet there’s been no sign of them. There’s a bit of coolness towards him right now.” Party officials are also expecting their annual conference in Birmingham to be moved online, following the decision by the Labour and Liberal Democrat parties to shift to virtual gatherings due to the pandemic. “It feels inevitable that conference will be cancelled and it’ll cost the party dearly,” said one official. “One of our main sources for fundraising for the year is going to be wiped out.” A Conservative spokesperson said: “At present, planning for the party conference is continuing.” They added: “We will keep this under review in light of the outbreak of coronavirus. Any decisions taken will be guided by the latest science and medical advice, and government guidance.” According to the Electoral Commission, the party received £37.6m in donations in the three months to last year’s election, a significant increase from the run-up to the 2017 and 2015 elections. Figures for 2020 have yet to be released but they are expected to be lower.

A spokesperson for the party said it was “not unusual” for donations to be “significantly lower” following a general election. “While everyone has had to adapt normal routines to deal with the coronavirus, fundraising continues as usual,” the individual said. Following the party’s 2019 election campaign, the Tories planned to scale down the party’s headquarters on Matthew Parker Street in Westminster and set up a new office in one of the “red wall” areas it won for the first time in the north and midlands of England. Ben Elliot, who was appointed co-chairman of the party by Mr Johnson last summer, is overseeing the transformation of the party’s machine, along with co-chair Amanda Milling. Dominic Cummings, Boris Johnson’s senior adviser, is supportive of plans to scale down the Westminster office.

The party has also culled its vice-chairs, MPs appointed to boost the party’s public profile. The roles, introduced by former prime minister Theresa May, came with an annual salary of £10,000. Mr Johnson decided to discontinue nearly all of these positions as part of his plans to streamline the party. One donor added that he believed the party needed to reduce its staffing levels immediately due to the pandemic. “The problem is not that they plan to let people go but the fact that they haven’t already . . . Elliot’s strategy of continuing fully staffed through the lockdown doesn’t make any sense.” No staff at Conservative HQ have been furloughed since the shutdown, and a spokesperson for the party denied it was planning a major number redundancies among its staff in Westminster. The spokesperson said: “As has already been reported, CCHQ undertook a party review and restructure at the start of the year — again entirely normally following a general election campaign — but claims that a significant number of redundancies are planned are simply not true.”
