Westministenders: Reployed back to No Deal Planning

Now Covid-19 is over (yeah I know right) lots of civil servants who were switched from brexit no deal planning to covid-19 planning have been switched back to their original remit.

For some reason this doesn't exactly fill me with confidence.

We've also seen yet another doubling down on the EU not being flexible and how they need to make a deal. And lots of rhetoric about being serious about no transiton planning.

Remember we have something of a deadline looming at the end of next month.

So before we are even out of this crisis, the government have lost interest. Today's press conference was an eye opener - Van Tam openly said that the time taken to get test results was too long and wasn't good enough yet and meant track and trace wasnt still operational despite it being such a crucial factor in being able to go into the next phase as planned on 1st June.

Another deadline we won't make - the Manchester Nightgale still has patients and the local authorities in the NW are going mental. So the government is playing more silly buggers over blame and villianising the evil workshy teachers. Noting the government guidance for teachers on how to teacher children at home says fuck all and the guidance on reopening schools makes a Theresa May dog ate my homework style document look positively well thought out, in terms of practicality. (Not even going to touch on the question of whether its safe - the whether its workable one is more important).

I guess that means things are getting back to normal at least.

A recession looms, but workers rights are now fair game and fully in the government cross hairs - as we see from a lack of PPE for the 'heroes' and the attacks on the teachers. As well as the carers who were sold down river. That'll be the ununionised carers...

Taking back control.

I would just like the 'recipe' for the vaccine - if it turns out to work - to be shared worldwide with no thought of making a profit from it. Not just for altruistic reasons, though those are important, but because this virus needs to be tackled globally.

JeSuisPoulet · 21/05/2020 09:07

Sorry Piggy, I do know there are issues with laptops etc. It's just hard when you see how much they get out of lessons online (dd's dyslexia tutor is amazing) and then see friends kids flourishing like that daily while yours has zero actual support. It really will end up being what makes or breaks schools in the future; climate change and temperature rises mean we will be seeing an increase of vector bourne disease. Threat of disease is isn't going away and it's frustrating watching the govt try to pretend it will just resolve itself with minimal counter measures and support for schools and other sectors who have to adapt.

RedToothBrush · 21/05/2020 09:10

Will we still get first access on vacine if they move production to USA though? Bet there's a caveat that they give priority to USA as part of conditions for deal.

Not happening.

It's just not.

Hope your right red but money speaks louder than lives. ☹️
Brokenshire on Jeremy Vine trying to answer questions on fact IoW app already been hacked and track and test nowhere near ready. Hasn't answered truthfully or answered at all to questions.
Seeing pictures of people on crowded beaches and all I can think of is NHS workers on their knees fighting to save lives. Selfish people. Useless Government. This country is now on its last legs. This Government has done to this country what two world wars failed to do, bought us to our knees☹️😡

Dontlickthetrolley · 21/05/2020 09:39

We had a 4 page letter this week about the return to school. It was the most depressing thing I've ever read from the school and made me want to cry by the end.

School should return on 1st June but decision has been made only R and Y1 will return on 8th June and Y6 will continue with on line learning. We have 90 children per year so they will only do 2 days a week with Wednesday being a cleaning day (am assuming Saturday or Sunday will be too)

When you read that there wil be allocated toilet breaks, if they soil themselves they have to sort themselves out and if they get up set they'll have to "self sooth" you wonder what sort of environment you're sending them in to.

The head teacher is angry and I don't blame in. With the whole backlash I've said for the last few days I think the government will pull the idea using the "we tried, but it's not workable" so yet again they're not seen as the ones who f*cked up.

COVID = 13 in scrabble though ...... no way to make 19 on my board

I believe that photo showed one of the poorly educated attempting to claim that numerology is a thing. By her attire, I assume she is living somewhere far to the south of where I am, which provides a good deal of context for the whole sorry spectacle.

Sadly for her, 5+6+7=18.

Unless there is a covid 18 wreaking havoc somewhere, we can safely assume that Barack Hussein Obama wasn't behind all of this.

Interesting idea in the telegraph:

www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2020/05/20/has-pick-britain-deliberately-designed-fail/
Has Pick for Britain been deliberately designed to fail?
I, and the thousands still looking for work, must surely be justified in thinking the scheme is little more than a PR exercise

In an unprecedented development, Prince Charles was wheeled out by the Government yesterday to put a bit of royal gloss on the scheme to get British workers into the fields of the UK in order to replace the tens of thousands of Eastern European workers who are not expected to come to stop fruit and veg rotting in our fields.

The question is, is whether he is being used by them in a cynical way to provide cover for an attempt to justify the mass import of migrant workers. The suspicion has to be yes.

The old adage about not attributing something to malice that can be attributed to incompetence should be kept in mind.

I do think there is a government desire to get council estates working on farms, but this idea does make me wonder what they are trying to achieve by getting the Royals to front this.

Hi @thecatfromjapan. Great to see you!

An interesting short thread on why our schools can’t possibly re-open using Denmark’s strategies.

I wondered this myself and wheeling out the royals when everyone is already feeling the pinch and some knowing the pinch is very soon on its way the cynic in me wondered is this Cummings going for the royals, theres a part of me that hopes that but wonder what will we be giving up in return, if that makes any sense, probably not Confused

Maybe REd it's because of his experience with the princes trust - and what he has done with restoring.... is it Dumfries?

I hope he thought very carefully before he got involved.....I think he would do it for very genuine reasons ...... I can never think that about this government.

The going back to schools is a shit show ..... it's about removing a barrier for people to go back to work, but is so poorly thought through. Reception and year 1 is all about developing social and inter-personal skills , and there's going to be none of that.
I think for older kids online learning can work incredibly well - but it needs to be resourced. (I am pleasantly surprised how well).
I get so fucked off when people harp on about the country can't afford it - of course it can, it's just a matter of priorities..... imagine how many chrome books can be bought for the cost of HS2.

mrslaughan · 21/05/2020 10:37

I missed PMQ's yesterday...... was it eventful? I presume not, as I haven't seen much coverage of it? I did see a short clip where Boris ummed and ages, and just didn't answer the question. Keir makes him look a appalling speaker/communicator- but then I have never been a Boris fan. (When he was London Mayor my sister often discussed how we just didn't get it).

I am still appalled that parliament is not continuing virtually.

Just wondering what people think of a four day week as way to aid economic recovery?

Johnson to find out today if he’ll face a criminal investigation over the Arcuri affair.
I expect it’ll be a ‘not in the public interest to proceed’ conclusion, or another way of burying it.

Hope your right red but money speaks louder than lives

They still need the expertise of people to set up and run a pharmaceutical manufacturing line. Relocating people takes time. Especially if its international relocation and people have family. Time is something they don't have in this situation. Who wants to move to the US at the moment? It's not quite the attractive proposition it might once have been. Especially if they are a scientist or reasonably well off in the UK or EU.

Longer term there is an argument that manufacturing should be restarted in the US but this is about security not solving the covid-19 crisis. That does present astra zeneca with a business opportunity, but that's very much more further down the line.

This Government has done to this country what two world wars failed to do, bought us to our knees.

But it is what people wanted. They had a golden opportunity back last December to give Johnson the boot, but 'but Corbyn' was stronger for most.

I take it that Prince Charles is still holed up in Scotland?

DGRossetti · 21/05/2020 11:59

Sebastian Payne

@SebastianEPayne

Some Tory donors are also annoyed Boris Johnson has yet to deliver on his promise of peerages: "Boris promised peerages to the likes of Peter Cruddas and Michael Spencer, yet there’s been no sign of them. There’s a bit of coolness towards him right now."

mrslaughan · 21/05/2020 12:12

Maybe C&Pnova is really Katie Hopkins

DGRossetti · 21/05/2020 12:27

Another one for the scrap heap then ...

www.theguardian.com/politics/2020/may/21/tory-mp-backs-labour-call-scrap-nhs-fees-migrant-health-staff

A leading Conservative MP has supported the Labour party’s call to scrap the fees some overseas health workers are charged to use the NHS.

The chair of the public administration and constitutional affairs committee, William Wragg, said: “Now is the time for a generosity of spirit towards those who have done so much good.”

Wow. This is the Telegraph.

Earlier lockdown could have prevented three-quarters of UK coronavirus deaths, modelling suggests

prettybird · 21/05/2020 13:08

Scotland's plan to come out of lockdown. Starting from the end of NEXT week at the earliest

Schools to go back part time after the school holidays (ie middle August) on a part time basis, with a hybrid approach with distance learning. Although P7s might go back for a short period in June - presumably to do their transition to secondary.

"Earlier lockdown could have prevented three-quarters of UK coronavirus deaths, modelling suggests"

I posted the calculations from Annan some days ago on the graphs thread

  • newspapers several days behind us, as usual
BigChocFrenzy · 21/05/2020 13:20

He calculated the difference that lockdown 1 week earlier would have made for the UK
and also 1 week later for Germany

An example of where dithering / poor decision making at the top really mattered

pointy I don’t know about other teams but the Imperial scientists are certainly expecting their vaccine to be free worldwide. And it won’t be one “recipe”. There are teams worldwide coming at the virus from different angles in consultation progressing at unprecedented speed. The Chinese for instance are also well advanced. In the end it will likely be that there will be different recipes that work and will be offered in different ways depending on funding and the logistics of manufacture.

Emilyontmoor · 21/05/2020 13:40

Schools started to go back in Hong Kong on Monday, rigorous testing, tracing and quarantine have stopped any community transmission, mask wearing is compulsory, temperatures are checked as children enter school and social distancing is marked on all floors. On the other hand the teachers were all massed (socially distanced) at the entrances clapping and playing and singing songs to welcome the children in and make them feel they and the day was special (the same in 2013, they do remember it as a special day)

And look where the imported cases are coming from? I am assuming all the Doha ones were transfer, a fair proportion of those likely from London as most from the US fly the other way www.chp.gov.hk/files/pdf/flights_trains_en.pdf

On the same website you also get details of the sex and age of the new cases and the buildings they live in. Most are assymptomatic.

Friends who are teachers in schools here have been told they are not even allowed to wear masks because it would be too disturbing for the children 🙄
