Westminstenders: A test of logistic planning

We are witnessing a demonstration in Government crisis management.

For the past week journalists have asked the same questions and politicians have said they've already done it / are doing it in the near future. But as time wears on, the inability to produce the answers or demonstrate results is proving illusive.

This will have consequences.

It is a demonstration in how planning has proved to be lacking in certain areas.

With Brexit in mind, the lack of vision, coordination with business and wider capability and capacity this does not bode well.

Sorry I didn't watch the briefing, I thought I heard that he was at here, but couldn't find any reference.

HoneysuckIejasmine · 06/04/2020 20:25

Uh oh.

ListeningQuietly · 06/04/2020 20:26

Really need Boris to pull through as a high profile death at this time would destabilise lots of people
and politics
and business

mrslaughan · 06/04/2020 20:26

Exactly my feelings @ICouldHaveBeenAContender

yoikes · 06/04/2020 20:27

He has several children and another on the way...Sad

His own hubrustic behaviour has caused this but I sincerely hope he recovers.

I imagine there are many who will now - sadly - sit up and take notice.

BJ is only 55.

TheElementsOfMedical · 06/04/2020 20:28

BJ has been moved to ICU

Well, hell.

RedToothBrush · 06/04/2020 20:30

Outcomes of ICU patients in UK...

Look at the 50 - 69 age group...

Didn’t take his own advice. Made tasteless joke about last gasps. Still, I hope he pulls through.

NotJustACigar · 06/04/2020 20:31

I hope he recovers as this must be so frightening for everyone suffering at home with symptoms.

Sostenueto · 06/04/2020 20:37

No matter what your politics is this is deadly serious. Knew they were playing it down. No matter what we think of him he is our Priminister and the country needs him.

BigChocFrenzy · 06/04/2020 20:38

Oh shit
As a fellow human being, I wish him well - and everyone else on ICU too

BigChocFrenzy · 06/04/2020 20:39

From ER doctor in New Orleans:

https://texags.com/forums/84/topics/3102444

Clinical course is predictable.

2-11 days after exposure (day 5 on average) flu like symptoms start.
Common are fever, headache, dry cough, myalgias(back pain), nausea without vomiting, abdominal discomfort with some diarrhea,
loss of smell, anorexia, fatigue.

Day 5 of symptoms- increased SOB, and bilateral viral pneumonia from direct viral damage to lung parenchyma.

Day 10- Cytokine storm leading to acute ARDS and multiorgan failure.
You can literally watch it happen in a matter of hours.

81% mild symptoms, 14% severe symptoms requiring hospitalization, 5% critical

RedToothBrush · 06/04/2020 20:48

Steven Swinford has just tweeted Johnson is conscious and on oxygen (not a ventilator which would be very bad news).

Beth Rigby@BethRigby
Senior govt source tells me ‘the PM is the PM’ but he has asked Dominic Raab to deputise for him & For Sec takes on any responsibilities he might need, including day-to-day running of #coronavirus response. Also takes over security decisions as necessary

This may be the time for a National Government. Am really praying he recovers.( And all those in ICU with him) Glad Starmer is leader of opposition a cool head. Dominic Raab not up to it on his own. What a f***g awful year. God help us all.Sad

BBC-Coronavirus: Inside an ICU fighting Covid-19
(video)
One of the early comments is that "all the patients here are critically ill"

I was under the impression that everyone who got taken to hospital needed intensive care even if that was just oxygen. Is that not so?

RedToothBrush · 06/04/2020 21:11

If we were in the US the 25th Amendment for Presidential Incapacity would have kicked it now.

OP posts:
Sostenueto · 06/04/2020 21:12

Yes he is on oxygen but not respirator.

BigChocFrenzy · 06/04/2020 21:15

"I was under the impression that everyone who got taken to hospital needed intensive care even if that was just oxygen. Is that not so?"

Not normally, peregrina

Although the criteria for accepting adult CV patients into hospital is much higher than is usual for breathing difficulties

  • check out the MN "Burning lungs threads" -

patients would be admitted for checks that can't be done at home by e.g. an ambulance crew
and most then just need oxygen via a cannula, at least unless they deteriorate

Sostenueto · 06/04/2020 21:24

MN already shut down Boris in ICU thread bloody trolls!

BigChocFrenzy · 06/04/2020 21:26

"If we were in the US the 25th Amendment for Presidential Incapacity would have kicked it now."

I've long thought we need an official Deputy-PM, not just a stand-in

With an automatic switchover to avoid a very sick PM holding onto power, out of misguided duty or whatever other reason
Or one with dementia say < peers across the pond >

However PMs don't like any dilution of their power, anyone hovering waiting for tragedy or scandal

Neither do Presidents of the USA
The Veep position has often been described there as "tits on a bull"

The old UK system - and maybe the current longterm system if BJ is ill for weeks - was that the Cabinet would elect someone
That would have to be done in thsése circs by videoconf. to avoid going through the same bloody process in 2 weeks or so

Sostenueto · 06/04/2020 21:26

Erm I didn't know you can give oxygen through a cannula.Confused

DGRossetti · 06/04/2020 21:27

If we were in the US the 25th Amendment for Presidential Incapacity would have kicked it now

Ages ago I suggested the government needed to make the lines of responsibility crystal clear for just this event Sad. It's not a time for dithering.

BigChocFrenzy · 06/04/2020 21:27

High flow oxygen via nasal cannula ?

BigChocFrenzy · 06/04/2020 21:29

I read an ER doctor on a US site saying they start with that for some patients
