Westminstenders: A test of logistic planning

We are witnessing a demonstration in Government crisis management.

For the past week journalists have asked the same questions and politicians have said they've already done it / are doing it in the near future. But as time wears on, the inability to produce the answers or demonstrate results is proving illusive.

This will have consequences.

It is a demonstration in how planning has proved to be lacking in certain areas.

With Brexit in mind, the lack of vision, coordination with business and wider capability and capacity this does not bode well.

prettybird - inevitable, but a shame. She and Sturgeon made an excellent double-act.

Choux · 05/04/2020 22:18

@yoikes why would he have received a high viral load? We don't know how he got it or when.

LouiseCollins28 · 05/04/2020 22:18

yoikes yeah looking back on it holding that football game was really a bad idea. I Liverpool people and Liverpool hospitals doesn’t suffer extra cases because of that but I fear they will have.

What a night! Queen on TV for a televised address for the first time in years

PM in hospital!

and apparently CMO Calderwood has resigned tonight as well!

yoikes · 05/04/2020 22:26

In the course of his day the PM meets (and has met) with lots of people - including in a hospital setting - and refused to stop shaking hands and social distance against all medical advice.

I imagine the viral load he could have been exposed to is large, sadly.

Complete idiocy and hubris.

yoikes · 05/04/2020 22:27

Was lord bath a cheltenham goer by any chance?

yoikes · 05/04/2020 22:28

louise
Bergamo in italy has been the worst hit area by far.
2 weeks before the first cases 1/3 of the town travelled to Milan for a football game....

JeSuisPoulet · 05/04/2020 22:28

Guardian also had a story about Cumming's uncle dying from COVID today. He seemed to have done some worthy work, but the story was spoiled when it was noted HIS daughter got to visit him wearing FULL PPE Hmm. Divides ever so apparent when juxtaposed to the children being buried alone Sad.

JeSuisPoulet · 05/04/2020 22:30

Speaking of Bozo and his inability to keep his hands in his pockets, do we have any more insights into effects on pregnancy/foetus?

yoikes · 05/04/2020 22:30

It's always been 1 rule for the plebs and another for the rich

'Twas ever thus

yoikes · 05/04/2020 22:32

jesuis
Not really possible yet...
That could be another ticking health time bomb of course...

RedToothBrush · 05/04/2020 22:34

2 weeks before the first cases 1/3 of the town travelled to Milan for a football game....

The outbreak in Madrid is thought to be linked to a football match in Milan.

And a sizeable number of cases in Iceland and thought to be linked to an unnamed Premier league match.

RedToothBrush · 05/04/2020 22:35

The news said there had been a sharp uptick in cases in the North West.

yoikes I'm so cross with them all and I'm struggling to feel pity for these Peter Pan men who decided to play Russian Roulette with all of our families.

Peregrina · 05/04/2020 22:40

With regards to the sports matches, in early March we hadn't fully realised just how serious it could be and it seems that some people get a mild dose.

yoikes · 05/04/2020 22:42

I don't agree peregrina
I slso know people in Italy were horrified that the match went ahead.
I was aghast at the match going ahead and have been predicting a huge cluster in that area ever since.
Ditto Cheltenham races.
The liverpool/Cheshire area is one to watch.

JeSuisPoulet · 05/04/2020 22:51

I took my kid out of Primary a week and a half earlier than schools closing because it was so obvious to me that they should have been closed that Monday. We knew what was happening in China in early January; why would it be different here?

HesterThrale · 05/04/2020 22:59

Crufts 5-8 March
Liverpool Madrid match 11 March
Cheltenham 10-13 March
Stereophonics concert 14 March

Looking back, it seems crazy that any of these went ahead. To be honest, I think there was anxiety and criticism about them all at the time. Just think of the number of cases that could have been seeded from these events. 3 to 4 weeks on, we’re now starting to see the time-bomb explode.

HoneysuckIejasmine · 05/04/2020 23:01

I live near Cheltenham. I despise horse racing anyway and I am very angry that locals will have been exposed to such risk, whether they went to the races or not. It scares me that it will be out in my community, probably in high numbers, because of horse racing FFS. We've been isolating since March 17th. I hope if we had been exposed before then we would be displaying symptoms by now and therefore hope we're safe for now.

JeSuisPoulet · 05/04/2020 23:01

Jaysus, just realised Raab would take over...the one who wanted to rain fire and brimstone on China just a few short months ago Shock We really don't need a trigger happy tarantula keeper in charge after the clown

yoikes · 05/04/2020 23:02

Me too jesuis took them out a week before schools closed.

We knew what was coming....it wasbeing reported everyday...first China, then Iran, Spain, Italy, France....and our Govt just watched the tsunami engulf us.

yoikes · 05/04/2020 23:04

Trouble is that those who need the most invasive medical help (that is, ventilation..) tend to be ill for a while before they get really sick and require hospitalization....

midwesteaster · 05/04/2020 23:08

I did Calderwood a disservice, she has done the honorable thing.
It is a shame that someone with competence wasn't capable of following their own good advice.
But leaders have to lead.

Johnson surely must actually be unwell to be in hospital my DB has been very unwell for over a week (on the mend now) but was told only to go to hospital if he had significant difficulties breathing. He wasn't even considered for testing.
I understand that the PM will get much better care but hospitals are surely only full of very sick people at present.

BigChocFrenzy · 05/04/2020 23:24

Profit from Coronavirus - who will make loadsa money ?
Gosh the ones who already are very rich

www.theguardian.com/business/2020/apr/05/rees-mogg-firm-accused-of-cashing-in-on-coronavirus-crisis

Government minister Jacob Rees-Mogg’^s investment firm has been criticised for exploiting the coronavirus crisis after telling clients it provided a chance to make “super normal returns”.

RedToothBrush · 05/04/2020 23:25

Johnson appeared on Thursday. I think the Queens broadcast (which in theory could be put out at any point) announced Wednesday /Thursday.

Queens speech broadcast at 8pm. Johnson announcement at 9.10pm. Rumours have been floating about on political twitter all day that Johnson is more unwell than is being let on and starting to cause concern.

Looks awfully coordinated in case he wasn't improving today so he could go to hospital in a calm way just after our Head of State had done a 'steady the ship' address. Its far better for the optics to be doing that, just in case, rather than having Johnson blue lighted in an Emergency.

I think there is rather more concern for him than is being officially let on.

order-order.com/2020/04/05/how-ill-is-boris/
HOW ILL IS BORIS REALLY?

Guido has been hearing for the last week that he’s not in great shape, Guido has not been able to verify the rumour that Boris had pneumonia as a child, which might suggest he is susceptible to respiratory infections. Downing Street has been a cluster for coronavirus with even “Downing Street Sources” going down with it…
