Westminstenders: The Mask is Slipping

This week has seen the department of the Chancellor who launched a 50p piece, the serious contemplation of a tin pot bridge, the rebirth of eugenics as a subject for cabinet, the announcement of the end of the BBC as we know it, the cabinet chanting after the PM in a way Orwell would be proud of, suppression of a report into trade deals which dares to mention the effect of distance and geography, worrying signs of an ever growing rift with Europe over negotiations for a deal, an appointment which starts to make our membership of the ECHR look very dodgy and there have been rather a lot of floods which so far seemed to have escaped the attention of those in London busy in their own swamp.

It's becoming apparent very quickly just how Trump like our new government are and how they want the UK to emulate the very worst aspects of America.

We are falling fast and its not looking like it will be pretty.

All we need is a major global issue to test our national resilience and the incompetence will truly be laid bare for us all to see... But not necessarily speak of. Such us the way it works.

Brexit Britain is not a nice looking prospect.

The paradox of wanting good public services but not being prepared to pay them. Low taxes make good headlines. What's the alternative the madness of socialism?

BigChocFrenzy · 29/02/2020 16:27

I'm a floating centrist

My beliefs come from growing up very poor and also suffering daily racial abuse in the bad old days

Being comfortably off, STEM Phd etc has massively changed my standard of living, but not those beliefs

I'm not one who pulls up the ladder behind her

However, I disagree with both Labour & Tory on the balance of what the state must do
and what is best done by individuals taking responsibility for themselves

I'm also flabbergasted that most parties, including some in the Tory party, are willing to throw women & girls overboard and abandon single sex spaces,
to pander to a powerful organised group of men:
encouraging confused, often autistic kids - as I was - on a pathway to irreversible physical damage such as sterility,
censoring & punishing those of us who object to any of this

BigChocFrenzy · 29/02/2020 16:35

In Germany, there has been a longterm broad agreement among all the major parties on a reasonably decent level of public services and benefits
AND
taxation to pay for this

Not borrowing - the last financial year that I have figures for, Germany had a surplus of 58 billion

I happily pay higher taxes here, to have all that

The CDU - right of centre - has been in power most of the post-war years
I seriously disagree with their social conservatism - on abortion, equal marriage - but I mostly like their economic policies
Conservatism doesn't have to mean - and should never mean - ruthlessly hammering the poor & vulnerable

KenDodd · 29/02/2020 16:59

What's the alternative the madness of socialism?

What do you mean, like Scandinavia?

ListeningQuietly · 29/02/2020 17:00

What do you mean, like Scandinavia?
Beat me to it Grin

tobee · 29/02/2020 17:35

So Johnson's going to become a daddy again!

Peregrina · 29/02/2020 17:39

Conservatism doesn't have to mean - and should never mean - ruthlessly hammering the poor & vulnerable

I so agree with this, and I feel that it's sad to see the Tory party reduced to this. I also feel it's sad that the members were quite happy to vote for a known liar and cheat to become PM.

prettybird · 29/02/2020 17:39

So Carrie is indeed pregnant muses, if that rumour has been proven to be true, what about the black eye because he was playing around again Hmm

Good day to announce it, given the bad press about Sir Philip Rutnam Hmm

I'm sure I'm not the only one to feel not happiness for Carrie but sympathy and concern Shock

tobee · 29/02/2020 17:40

Hmmm

tobee · 29/02/2020 17:41

Sympathy and concern for his other kids. Acknowledged and not. Hmm

yoikes · 29/02/2020 17:41

Engaged too!

Peregrina · 29/02/2020 17:42

I see that they have also announced their engagement.

So how much truth is there that she gave him a black eye for playing away? When will we see the vacancy for a mistress being filled, if not already?

yoikes · 29/02/2020 17:42

Amazes me how right this thread is at times :)

WTF0ver · 29/02/2020 17:43

It was probably Cumming's idea.

Peregrina · 29/02/2020 17:43

Oh and isn't it convenient when there is the corona virus crisis and the resignation of a senior civil servant to deal with?

Pity there are no handy royals to wheel out for this occasion.

Mockersisrightasusual · 29/02/2020 17:43

Who remembers when Tory ministers (Peter Lilley) raged against men living on the public purse who father numerous children by different mothers. I seem to recall there was talk at conference of compulsory sterilisation, in extremis.

TheElementsOdeToJoy · 29/02/2020 17:45

The True BeLeavers will be ecstatic.

Peregrina · 29/02/2020 17:52

Oh Cross posts there sorry.

pussycatinboots · 29/02/2020 17:58

How many is that now?Hmm

tobee · 29/02/2020 18:02

Who knows!

Mockersisrightasusual · 29/02/2020 18:09

BBC News has just reported that BJ & CS are "the first unmarried couple in 10 Downing St."

This is tediously false. They are the first acknowledged umarried couple. Everybody knew about DLG and Frances Stevenson and looked the other way pretending not to notice, perhaps tutting as they did.

OhMargo · 29/02/2020 18:11

Courageous man that senior civil servant. Well done to him. He knows that any settlement would include a gag clause. We shall see what comes out in the wash, but I am presuming it is not something that one of his standing would do lightly.

I have just heard on LBC that Johnson is to become a Dad again. Did I hear that correctly?

OhMargo · 29/02/2020 18:14

Is there a new thread incoming?

HenHarrier · 29/02/2020 18:17

Johnson engaged? Well it is Feb 29th, perhaps Carrie wears the trousers in that relationship.
