No, not yet, but soon. Just 24 more sleeps until we legally leave the EU at 11pm on 31 January and finally enter the transition period after what seems like centuries of argument, dither and delay. We do so with hope, optimism and a determination to be a good friend and neighbour to the EU, but for now, no one said it better than Winston Churchill.

“This is not the end, this is not even the beginning of the end, this is just perhaps the end of the beginning.”

The Pub Rule is the same as it always was: all welcome but only if you leave goadery outside. The first drink is on the house.

They can save up a bit more then and build their own replica Big Ben to bong to their hearts content.

SingingLily · 17/01/2020 14:02

what is there to be proud of at the moment?

Plenty!

Even PMQs have calmed down. I think the new Speaker is doing a fine job to restore the prestige and authority of the post.

Just thought I'd add that.

but then epic if you are not bovvered in the slightest, why should we be? why should those of us who think shooting ourselves in the foot is unproductive at the bare minimum give a flying fuck about those who have enabled this?

So then we still have a divided nation (52:48 remember) so where does that take us in the future? How is it constructive in terms of getting people to come together again to deal with the rest of the shit (NHS, education, Iran to name but 3)?

Just musing, off to walk the dog on my bit of La Manche now and wonder if I can see France... probs not as its a bit hazy!

SingingLily · 17/01/2020 14:04

Welcome back, Epic.

Autumn, it's Friday so I hope this means you are winding down ready for the weekend.

“but then epic if you are not bovvered in the slightest, why should we be? why should those of us who think shooting ourselves in the foot is unproductive at the bare minimum give a flying fuck about those who have enabled this?”

Did anyone ask you to be?

Why would I want to make an “effort” to heal a divide with people who have called me everything from a pig to a dog?

I’m gonna pass thanks.

SingingLily · 17/01/2020 14:08

And Walking, thank you for reminding me of why people voted as they did in the GE.

Just to remind us of the result...and another addition to Dusty's list:

Point is epic no one on this thread has called you names and I don't think either me or the other remainers on here are huge exceptions. I don't know when you got that abuse but time to look past it.
Just today on this threads remainers got called blue-faced loons and snowflakes- I'm still on here, making an effort because the worst would be to lead segregated lives online and IRL. All cosy in our little respective bubbles. Dreadful.

DustyDiamond · 17/01/2020 14:14

What an unpleasant thread, with the 'regulars' trying to rule on who can post and who can't. Clearly, they can't stand any kind of view that doesn't fit their narrow criteria of acceptability.

Does MNHQ allow users to impose their own rules and restrict access to threads to only True Believers?

If you want to vet the list of Authorised True Believers then set up a Facebook group of your own.

Anyone can post - Obvs 🙄

But that doesn't mean I have to agree with, or kowtow to, shitposts

Why come onto a thread just to goad & poke for reaction?

Tediously pathetic

SingingLily · 17/01/2020 14:19

Why come onto a thread just to goad & poke for reaction?

And all the while, telling us to mind people's sensitivities and asking us how this nation will ever heal the divide.

Beggars belief that anyone thinks it's the right way to go about things.

This has been a good-natured thread for so long. I suppose we'll have to put up with more of this behaviour as 31 January approaches.

Extinction burst. It's everywhere still.

OP posts:
DustyDiamond · 17/01/2020 14:20

Just today on this threads remainers got called blue-faced loons

As ever, I refer not to remain voters, or indeed 'Remainers' - but rather the total fruit loops who paint themselves blue & yellow & screech & lament leaving a trading block as if it's the death of a loved one

Utterly bonkers

Extremists of any sort are tapped in the head - remainiacs are no different (and for clarity, I also think the extremist nutters on the other side are equally pathetic)

Mistigri · 17/01/2020 14:22

And all the while, telling us to mind people's sensitivities and asking us how this nation will ever heal the divide.

Do you not think this is a reasonable question? The country is split down the middle; is that a state of affairs you personally would prefer to see continue?

DustyDiamond · 17/01/2020 14:22

I suppose we'll have to put up with more of this behaviour as 31 January approaches.

Yep!
Strap in Lily - has ever been thus

There'll likely be a great deal of teeth gnashing, garment rending & abuse on the 31st

They love it 🙄🙄🙄

NiceGuyNeddie · 17/01/2020 14:25

Why come onto a thread just to goad & poke for reaction?

A) pp are free to post within the rules
B) who has goaded and poked, other than regulars here?

SingingLily · 17/01/2020 14:26

Well, I have been late to these threads, Dusty, so I was spared the worst of it. However, I have learned that there are some posters who are simply not worth engaging with as anything they try to couch as a reasonable or (and this is a regular thing) Genuine Question is in fact anything but.

OP posts:
Songsofexperience · 17/01/2020 14:26

Well, let's agree to disagree then but I stand by the opinion that using an iconic landmark to celebrate the most divisive event of recent times (that's a fact) is ill-judged. It's not goady to say that.

DustyDiamond · 17/01/2020 14:35

No it's not Songs
And fwiw I don't think you've been goady

Walkingdeadfangirl · 17/01/2020 14:36

I would love to know how turning down the music at 11pm on independence day will help 'heal the nation'.
We have seen this tactic before, so not falling for it again.

I am not against leaving the EU but ...
... I just want a meaningful vote
... I just want a peoples vote
... I just want to stop a no deal
... I just want another extension
... I just want to stop Brexit 😮😮😮

I accept we are leaving the EU but remainers are hurting,
lets heal the nation ...
... by not celebrating to much
... by agreeing lots of amendments to the WA
... by aligning closely with EU rules
... by not doing a trade deal with America
... by staying in the SM
... by staying in the CU
... by rejoining the EU 😮😮😮

NiceGuyNeddie · 17/01/2020 14:36

it's perfectly fine not to engage, obviously, no one is forced to discuss. What isn't fine is trying to tell people not to post, or post elsewhere or suggest that this is somehow a private thread for pp of a certain mind.

That's not right.

DustyDiamond · 17/01/2020 14:37

A) pp are free to post within the rules

Are they?

Who knew?!

Thank the LORD you are here to educate us!

We are truly #blessed

I didn’t say YOU had done those things Songs, I was talking generally, as I thought you were?

I know that tactic

surely the electoral mandate means the State as well as carrying out the wishes of those who elected it should endorse those wishes appropriately.

No intention to be opaque. Simply stating that it is not enough to print a manifesto stating a policy and get it endorsed by the voters. You actually have to believe in the policy and give it full backing as the electorate have. Then you have to deliver it.

Surely this is even more self evident when the policy involves selling the vision to an International negotiating partner.

Just listened to Brexitcast which I can highly recommend again. They did a canter through the Labour Leadership but even Katya volunteered that the EU have no interest in anyone but Tory politicians now due to "Boris' stonking majority".

It is also starting to dawn on them that Barnier is not a politician but a civil servant. Therefore no real reason to give him a political interlocutor from the UK as opposed to Boris' civil service rep - he is not keen on this view and is busy trying to concoct his own Mandate before the EU27 rein him in.
