No, not yet, but soon. Just 24 more sleeps until we legally leave the EU at 11pm on 31 January and finally enter the transition period after what seems like centuries of argument, dither and delay. We do so with hope, optimism and a determination to be a good friend and neighbour to the EU, but for now, no one said it better than Winston Churchill.

“This is not the end, this is not even the beginning of the end, this is just perhaps the end of the beginning.”

The Pub Rule is the same as it always was: all welcome but only if you leave goadery outside. The first drink is on the house.

so long as it's a one way street, obvs
No, not what I said and honestly remainer marches (went to 2 of them) were not abusive towards leavers at all. Critical of brexit yes, harsh towards the government and prominent politicians, yes, but not directed against ordinary voters.
Calling them blue faced loons however IS offensive.

Bearbehind · 17/01/2020 09:07

Morning all!

I’ve been staying away from these threads as there’s not much to say ATM

I’m resigned to Brexit and whatever it brings but I have to say I’m astounded by those contributing to raise ÂŖ500k just so Big Ben can bong on 31st

How ridiculous is that?

It’s a complete and utter meaningless waste of money and does serve to illustrate the fact that for many, leaving the EU is just about flicking 2 fingers to them with symbolic gestures like this

Is that really the best use of funds at this moment?

I do despair of it all sometimes

howabout · 17/01/2020 09:14

A ÂŖ10 to mark that you think Big Ben should Bong is surely a better use of resources than 3 years of pro Remain marches and chanting with accompanying fares for day trips to London and the Pret queue.

In other news, the Scottish Parliament had a right chin scratching session yesterday. Some mighty disappointed wee faces when they were told continuing to fly their EU flag post Brexit would be AGAINST protocol and NEEDLESSLY PROVOCATIVE.

I see the EU are consigning all Union Jacks to safest keeping in their Memorabilia collection pronto. I don't think we are slapping export tariffs on Union Jacks Confused (tbh I doubt we actually manufacture them all in the UK)

howabout · 17/01/2020 09:15

In Labour Leadership news the Registered supporter window has now closed. There was no en masse influx of Blairites.

That's a matter of perspective!
For you maybe it is but not for me!

Bearbehind · 17/01/2020 09:17

The marches were to try and change the course of events for those who didn’t support Brexit - Big Ben bonging is just gloating

Plus, most of us will be in bed and won’t even hear it

SingingLily · 17/01/2020 09:20

Plus, most of us will be in bed and won’t even hear it

No need to worry about it then.

I couldn't care less about Big Ben.

I will, however, be raising a glass to toast our independence with Robert Buckland (and probably a few hundred other people).

My racist family are planning a little celebration with their racist friends btw.

Just because you are surrounded by racists (who happened to vote in a certain way), is no foundation to extrapolate that to the wider population.

Your racist family are nothing to do with me or others on these threads - perhaps take your ire out on the people who actually deserve it?

Lashing out at strangers online because your family are racist is bizarre behaviour Confused

howabout · 17/01/2020 09:22

I actually think the primary motive behind the Big Ben Bong campaign is to disincentivise a final renting of garments and wailing and gnashing of teeth from Steve and co.

Anyway here is Baroness Nicky pouring oil on troubled waters in her own inimitable style. Pure class.

www.politicshome.com/news/uk/political-parties/conservative-party/boris-johnson/news/109135/nicky-morgan-hails-prime

Defending her decision, Baroness Morgan told The House: "My view is that I took the role in Cabinet when the Prime Minister offered it on the basis that I think it’s really important to have a variety of voices around the table with different views on the Conservative Party, different views on Brexit, and the Prime Minister understands and respects that.

"I also think that if you’re asked to serve your country and Parliament then you should say yes unless there’s a very good reason to say no.

"The lesson from the last three-and-a-half years and from the general election is the country expects its politicians to be able to put aside their differences and get things done on their behalf. I hope that I’ve been able to show that this is possible."

On Mr Johnson's performance as Prime Minister, she added: "It is incumbent on those of us in public life to take down the temperature of situations.

"That is one of the things I have watched Boris Johnson doing and that’s why working alongside him is so enjoyable.

"The way he conducts debates and everything else now, he absolutely just does it in a prime ministerial way."

Morning All. As I distract myself from working by posting here - I'll have some pancakes, crispy bacon and maple syrup with lashings of butter please. One of my fave breakfasts (anytime) meals.

Things seem to be progressing nicely and I'm very pleased to hear the various proposals regarding our farming and preserving our standards, if not increasing them, in regards to animal welfare and enironmental protection.

Can't say I'm too bothered about Big Ben and all; I find it similar to people wanting to spend loads on a wedding, when the money could be better spent, but that's a choice.

I was having a think about any Racists I know or have ever come across in my not very 'sheltered' life. I don't know any racists, at least not in the UK, (some Chinese ex-colleagues were very racist in their own country) and I've come across very few in reality.

Maybe I send out an unconscious signal to Racists saying 'keep away from me'. I have also found quite a large increase in the ethnic diversity of my local, rural, small town SW area in recent times and I haven't noticed any adverse reaction from the local population at all.

AutumnRose1 · 17/01/2020 10:44

I had more racist remarks hurled at me in the street in the weekend after the Brexit vote than the rest of my life put together.

I didn’t say anything. But this time I’m going to approach those people and tell them I voted for Brexit and have the conversation. This is actually something I decided after talking to my 81 year old mother. She feels strongly that non white Brexiteers need to stand up and be counted but admittedly she doesn’t have a job to lose.

I can’t keep being this soft. If the Priti Patels of the world can stand up to it, so must I. I joke about being a snowflake occasionally but it’s kind of not funny any more.

On a lighter note, breakfast looks fab!

TheGhostOfEpicPast · 17/01/2020 10:53

I couldn’t give a shiny shit if Big Ben bongs or not. That said, the perpetually offended crowd need to just bore off... just turn off the damn tv and go to bed that night. Who the hell cares?

After listening to that twat Bray and his megaphone for 3 1/2 long years, I think a brief moment of bongs is not exactly an issue is it?

Get. A. Life.

TheGhostOfEpicPast · 17/01/2020 10:53

Annnnd... it turns out it won’t happen anyway. All is well. Have a day off.

TheGhostOfEpicPast · 17/01/2020 11:02

Personally I think we should just ship in Idina Menzel, for a rousing live rendition of “Let it go” instead.

NiceGuyNeddie · 17/01/2020 11:14

Precisely

AutumnRose1 · 17/01/2020 11:16

Epic 😂

howabout · 17/01/2020 11:49

Epic Star

NiceGuyNeddie · 17/01/2020 11:52

Ken, chuck, I'm sorry to hear that you have such awful issues with your family. You sound so angry about it. Perhaps you should start a thread on the Relationships board? It's over that way

And, again, you do not have any rights on Mumsnet to tell pp where they can and can't post.

time4chocolate · 17/01/2020 11:53

Epic love it😍🙌đŸģ

Walkingdeadfangirl · 17/01/2020 11:57

If Ben Ben is not allowed to ring out then I think it would be a great alternative to have 'STOOOOP BREEEEXIIIIT' yelled out with accompanying theatrics by blue-faced loons draped in EU flags.... Until the stoke of midnight 11pm when Brexiteers yell, 'YOU CANNNNNT STOOOOP BREXIT' followed by a rousing rendition of the '17 Million Fuck-Offs'.

I dont get this snowflakery that celebrating such a momentous occasion should be avoided because it will upset remainers. They will always be upset.

The only way to heal the country is to show everyone that we are proud of leaving the EU, it is a good thing and we will be better off because of it.

If we sort of meekly act like Brexit is some sort of shameful thing we are doing, remainers will never accept its a positive move. So lets put our best foot forward, a smile on our faces and party like its independence day, because on the 31st it will be.

yolofish · 17/01/2020 12:12

walking but to some (most?) who dont want to leave, that is very inflammatory. Cant you be positive without rubbing half the population's nose in it? Bonging Big Ben's bongs seems a bit like dancing on the table at someone's funeral!

TheGhostOfEpicPast · 17/01/2020 12:17

“Bonging Big Ben's bongs seems a bit like dancing on the table at someone's funeral!”

Lol. Grin Not really.

NiceGuyNeddie · 17/01/2020 12:19

The only way to heal the country is to show everyone that we are proud of leaving the EU, it is a good thing and we will be better off because of it

No, the only way to 'heal' the country is to prove to them that Brexit was a positive move. That can only be done over time. It certainly won't be done by people blustering about being 'proud' of Brexit - what is there to be proud of at the moment?

TheGhostOfEpicPast · 17/01/2020 12:19

But, then if the deceased was an utter arsehole, then a discreet, celebratory running man might not be entirely amiss...

howabout · 17/01/2020 12:20

Just seen a few of the top Lawrence Fox quotes from QT last night. Grin May have to FF through it on iplayer and just look for his bits.
