With weirdos set to run No10 and Trump seemingly having started a new war in the Middle East, 2020 already looks set to be a cracking year.

To start off your year, it turns out that chinese curse about interesting times is actually a fallacy...

Happy New Year.

May we make 2030...

I forgot you were the master of hyperbole

Master ? More like fucking emperor !

DGRossetti · 10/01/2020 18:23

It's as though the feminist movement that I was heavily involved with in the Seventies never happened.

What do you think is happening around you ? The menz are pushing back. Using what they learned from you.

Just stick em all in a Range Rover and give Phil the Greek the keys.

But does she not have the choice whether to work or not?
As do men who choose to be househusbands?
Or couples who choose to both work part time ?
its about the individual having the freedom to choose

HateIsNotGood · 10/01/2020 19:38

Fair Play to the Sussexes - if they want to live their lives separate to the RF why shouldn't they? Seems HRH agrees too and they have, initially, chosen the Canadian Option, which configures well.

They want to earn their own money and not receive any payments from the Public Purse. Can't disagree with that. You can choose your friends but you can't choose your family, so why shouldn't they be free to attend family events too. If it's outside of the Sussex Budget, then I'm sure their family wiill understand and cover the costs.

Just like many other families do.

ContinuityError · 10/01/2020 19:42

LQ, I just think it's sad that a University educated woman can't do more than have children and be an expensive clothes horse.

Her choice. She set her cap at William (might be channelling Georgette Heyer there though). Want there a rumour that she dropped out of Edinburgh and took a gap year so that she could apply to St Andrews?

Not all expensively and University educated women have ambitions above marrying the right sort of chap and procreating.

jasjas1973 · 10/01/2020 19:44

Yes RF are just like other families aren't they.

Give up their titles, royal protection and funding, then fair enough but otherwise, just looks like they want their cake and eat it... which is quite the british thing i suppose.

HateIsNotGood · 10/01/2020 20:33

jas I'm not sure what you might suggest otherwise for a RF Leaver? If they choose to downwardly socially mobilize themselves well all to the good really. It's an interesting concept in regards to Social Mobility.

As much as it is wrong that a child born into poverty should forever remain there; it is equally wrong that a child born into priviledge should be forced to remain there, moreso against their will.

BigChocFrenzy · 10/01/2020 21:03

Exactly, hate
Social mobility is made more difficult if people can't move down the scale
and it is ridiculous to force someone to remain in a high position merely because they were born to it and "owe us"

Any RF member should be allowed to step down, without facing such hatred and ill-wishing for doing so
The demands on MN threads for Queenie to "punish" them are ridiculous

imo abolishing the RF would be better for almost the whole RF, not just the taxpayers:

It is such an unnatural existence for able-bodied NT adults to be financed all their lives by the heads of the family,
to have to do what the monarch tells them
and to require their permission to e.g. take their own child out of the country

jasjas1973 · 10/01/2020 21:07

@Hatels...... i suggested what they should do if they no longer want this life, i have no problem whatsoever with that, e.g. like the chap who abdicated

fwiw they are born into taxpayer funded privilege.

BlaueLagune · 10/01/2020 21:32

Gosh I came on here expecting you all to be talking about NI and the return of the power sharing assembly and you're all talking about Harry & Meghan. Yawn.

If they want to live in Canada or wherever, who cares? Republicans don't care and monarchists have got three successors to come after the Queen. Harry and Archie are a long way down the pecking order.

derxa · 10/01/2020 21:35

Why can't Meghan and Harry live like David Linley and Sarah Chatto? Serious question. Learn a respectable trade and live quietly. It's what I'd do.

yolofish · 10/01/2020 21:42

I suppose it's all part of the upset of the world order in some ways... it's hard to explain but many of us have 'known' HMQ to be our head of state since before we were born, and it is I think generally accepted that she has done a good job within the framework she had.

Yet over the last xx years, we have Trump turning the USA upside down; Brexit changing the status quo in the UK; the Middle East continuing to be a mess; the rise of China etc etc.

Maybe for us Brits its a kind of despair at what we knew to be the way it was changing? FWIW I think H & M have behaved very badly (how very British of me!)

RedToothBrush · 10/01/2020 21:43

Re Meghan and Harry.

You can't just 'quit' the royal family. Especially if your plan is long term to cash in on the royal connection through media deals to be independently wealthy.

The idea that they can just walk out and then decide to live off the family name is utterly hypocritical and ridiculous.

All it does is feed the circus they claim they are trying to escape.

I'd have time for it, if they simply fucked off to Canada and then never did another media appearance or used their influence again. And instead went and got a low profile boring job to support the family.

However much sympathy I have for them about media intrusion, I find it rapidly evaporates because of their hypocritical attitude and how they've gone about the whole thing.

Its just tiresome.

FWIW I think H & M have behaved very badly (how very British of me!) I do too. How much bloody money do they need?
They could follow the example of this lovely woman.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katharine,_Duchess_of_Kent

derxa · 10/01/2020 21:47

Totally agree RTB

ContinuityError · 10/01/2020 21:56

Since H&M are independently wealthy and already have enough in the bank to fund a quiet lifestyle (ie never having to work a day in their life ever again), I’d suggest they fucked off to somewhere slightly dull but nice like Oslo and then lived a quietly boring life driving an electric car and complaining about the cost of a nice bottle of gin.

yolofish · 10/01/2020 22:02

But they want to provide the "solutions the world needs" according to their website; they dont want to fuck off to Oslo! (and having been there, I certainly couldnt cope with price of drink..) They want to mix with the A listers who are worth £200m plus and they really dont have the money to do that, hence the brand plans.

And agree about the Duchess of Kent derxa she is a lovely woman.

Fingers xd for Stormont and a working govt for NI.

RedToothBrush · 10/01/2020 22:09

I think about the environmental footprint of an A lister and think how we need less of them...

... And that's the effect they will have on a lot of people now. Thus I do think they are doomed to fail in their goal of changing the world because they lack any credibility whatsoever.

The 'cause' is perceived to be just a way to fund the lifestyle, and I think there is a going intolerance of those who are cash in on morality and issues in this way.

They could end up very much being counter productive as a result of being viewed as gigantic bandwagon riders.

interesting article in NYT

Trying to revert to boring old Brexit...

ContinuityError · 10/01/2020 22:17

I’ve not been to Oslo (it’s been voted one of the dullest cities in the world), but I’ve seen the prices in Stavanger (DH just kept saying “don’t look at the bill”). You could live a lovely, quiet, green life in Norway with sufficient (loads of) money.

Peregrina · 10/01/2020 22:22

I thought too of the Duchess of Kent - she was also quite senior and high profile at one time, and showed how withdrawing from public life should be done.
