A new thread as the other one is getting full. I'm enjoying the post election discussion. Every view is listened to and welcomed.

Brexit is happening, but what kind of Brexit will it be?

New leaderships for both Labour and the LibDems.

Most importantly, will Britain be Great in 2024?

Isn’t there a saying about the definition of stupidity being doing the same thing over and over again and expecting to get a different result?

Yes, there is. And another north London, metropolitan leader, this time with the added label of privilege of a title is doing the same thing all over again squared.

chatongris · 16/12/2019 19:08

On the plus side, if they dismantle the civil service they have zero chance of ever delivering Brexit. It's a complex technical task for which this government is singularly ill equipped.

MarshaBradyo · 16/12/2019 19:08

Corbyn’s bigger problem was that he was a hippy.

MarshaBradyo · 16/12/2019 19:09

Perceived to be a hippy. Not sure we need to put the word perceived - it’s all perception

placemats · 16/12/2019 19:15

What are Labour supposed to do over the next three months to stop Johnson in an 'effective opposition'?

Wake up!

There is no opposition. It's a majority Tory government.

There is no big tent politics or 'one nation Conservative'.

Remember, and I'm sure Bear and Cendrillion do, the Tories were in exactly the same place during the Blair years. The opposition was as effective then as a chocolate fire guard.

Labour should learn from this.

kinsss · 16/12/2019 19:27

Labour are a total disaster. I agree that NOW is the time to try hold the Tories to account, but no... it's a beauty contest and Comrade Corbyn will select his successor on the nod and at a time of his choosing. Perfect idiocy.

Anyway, Labour need a steely eyed devilish strategist to counterract Cummings, and someone who can get the press onside. Ok I know that is nigh impossible. But big oak trees grow from little acorns.

Yet another Sinatra-like comeback for Mandy?

I honestly can’t get my head around someone thinking Corbyn and Starmer are the same

prettybird · 16/12/2019 19:35

It does seem very sad Sad, nay shocking Shock, that there is a sense (not necessarily amongst the posters on here but amongst the Labour Party membership) that someone shouldn't work hard at school, get accepted by a decent university, go on to a better Uni for postgrad, work hard to do well in a career Hmm because then they would be "out of touch" with the membership Confused

One of the reasons we left NZ in the mid 70s (to be fair, we'd made the mistake of going to a small city town, New Plymouth Wink) was because my parents were concerned about that what they described as "the cult of mediocrity" , aka, thou shalt not stand out and show yourself to be too clever. They didn't want db or me to develop this attitude. Hmm

This idea that someone from working class roots can't better him/herself because they can then no longer represent the "working class" I think is much more insidious and dangerous Sad

kinsss · 16/12/2019 19:36

@CrissmussMockers

Doesn't matter anymore I'd be happy enough. Have to fight fire with fire...

Although I see that Rebecca LB appears to be the anointed one from Comrade Corbyn.

Good times ahead ha ha.

MarshaBradyo · 16/12/2019 19:38

If Corbyn succeeds in getting an image of him up next (how does he do that? Not sure how it works) then I’ll be so pissed off. Labour will never come back with more Corbyn like stuff.

CrissmussMockers · 16/12/2019 19:39

Well Quite.

It's all about victimhood, and my disadvantage is biggerer than yours.

Anyways, the plan is to get the leader elected early enough so no one who rejoins the party after the election gets to vote.

So much for £6 supporters.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 16/12/2019 19:40

The candidates will be put to the vote of the mebership, although some on the right of the party would happily go back to the top down organisation of the Blair years

Are we meant to take someone who uses 'Comrade Corbyn' seriously?
I think russian funded Comrade Boris is the one you need to worry about

JustAnotherPoster00 · 16/12/2019 19:42

Yes I remember the NEC doing the same when it came to new people wanting to vote in the Corbyn/Smith leadership election, didnt see the 'centrists' saying it was unfair then, weird that huh Hmm

Random18 · 16/12/2019 19:42

pretty well said!!!

If they don't get rid of the massive chip on their shoulder then they have no hope.

Most of my social circle have working class roots. We mainly (not all of course) have Degrees / PHDs / professional qualifications etc.

There has to be a balance.

Random18 · 16/12/2019 19:43

And I suspect most of is vote Labour / or if in scotland SNP!!

CrissmussMockers · 16/12/2019 19:43

Lord Voldemort Mandelson would devour the cummings little fox for breakfast.

The80sweregreat · 16/12/2019 19:43

People go on a lot about a decent opposition but what can they do right now with only 190 odd seats? Nothing much. Even a new leader next year can't really do or say much that's meaningful. People with not a lot in life voted Tory. Labour doesn't represent them anymore at the moment.
The tories will stump them at every turn and it's clear that the public want brexit at any price! I know I sound defeated but the opposition was wiped out on Friday.
I agree they need a new direction and leader but nothing will change till after brexit. Then they can (and should ) ramp up the volume.
Especially if the tories start backing away from the people who helped them : I have a feeling they will! Then they go for the kill.
They have much to learn from the Tory practice of exploitive practices. It's a shame they don't have the same sort of backing or money for decent spin doctors.

CrissmussMockers · 16/12/2019 19:48

There are quite a few voices within the Conservatives who want to take the party away from being the party of stashed loot and towards being a party of aspiration from whatever background, leaving Labour as the party of Alfred Doolittle and the rest of the 'undeserving poor,' as Shaw would have it.

One humungous elephant trap you'd need to be properly stupid to fall into.

(No, not you, Emily. Don't Sue Me.)

Grinchly · 16/12/2019 19:49

@Bearbehind
I understand what you say, though I don't entirely agree.

We need to find a way through this mess.

kinsss · 16/12/2019 19:51

@JustAnotherPoster00

Yeah it was me who called him Comrade Corbyn, myself and all those who switched to Tories this time. He is a Marxist Momentum puppet with about as much empathy as a brick, so call a spade a spade here.

There is nothing that can be done to the Tories now apart from a humungous performance at Leader's Questions, shove it in his face kind of thing (sorry but I mean it), and a robust Labour Leader is paramount for this. I hope Rebecca LB is up to the job, but it looks like she is going to be the anointed one.

Anyway, at this stage it is about regrouping, getting the base back, rebuilding and challenging the charlatan.

If they had Mandy on board again it could be great fun. Nothing to lose either really.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 16/12/2019 19:53

Lmao

Random18 · 16/12/2019 19:54

The80s they may not be able to win votes but they have the platform to make themselves heard.

They need to use other platforms to get their voices heard. They need to forensically question everything. They need to point out the lies and inconsistencies.

They need to come out on top in most of the exchanges in HoC.

They basically need to do their job

JustAnotherPoster00 · 16/12/2019 19:55

If a tree falls in the forest and theres no one there to hear it, does it make a sound?
