And, the loss of power and influence from DUP means the NI parties will have to work together?

I can't figure out whether this will mean they go back to Stormont.

Cos 3 years of refusing to go to work is a bit much.

TokyoSushi · 13/12/2019 11:11

Grim PMK

Tanith · 13/12/2019 11:13

Liverpool remained Labour, voting out Frank Field by a huge margin.

Dennis Skinner also lost his seat, in spite of being a Leave supporter.

It doesn't seem to be "all about Brexit" in those areas.

kingsassassin · 13/12/2019 11:18

PMK. Sadly I feel that was the second referendum so we're now definitely leaving. Otherwise, I hope Johnson is sufficiently power crazed and narcissistic to want a second term and therefore try not to totally fuck over everything.

placemats · 13/12/2019 11:20

I'm resigned to the fact that Johnson has a large majority and, hear me out, I actually think its a good thing.

Firstly, it will reform Labour - Momentum is crawling to a stop now.

Secondly, it will mean a softer Brexit, quite possibly a Norway style agreement to keep the Union - and, you never know, the Greenland option thrown in for Northern Ireland and Scotland to keep EU citizenship - obviously open to everyone including England and Wales. This will not be popular with the ERG and is risky but with a majority of over 60 Johnson has a certain amount to play for. Francois and JRM can swing.

bellinisurge · 13/12/2019 11:22

Thanks Red. Labour need to lick their wounds but not for long, get rid of Corbyn and his bunch as soon as possible to reinvent themselves, hold Johnson to account every step of the way out of the EU and through the trade negotiations and pick them off when the Tories inevitably fuck up. Johnson is going to make a bid for the centre right ground and a decent Opposition will get centre left first.

AuldAlliance · 13/12/2019 11:22

I'm watching from France, hoping I get my citizenship papers through soon and then a passport that I won't be embarrassed to use and that won't complicate movement in the EU for me.

I felt very alienated by the result of the Brexit referendum and even more so now. I can't get my head around people electing a racist, notoriously workshy pathological liar to lead the country in such a vital moment of its history. The results in NI and Scotland are meagre consolation.

OublietteBravo · 13/12/2019 11:23

The mood in my office is subdued this morning. My manager’s SIL (Labour) lost her seat.

dontcallmelen · 13/12/2019 11:26

placemats I truly hope that may the case, I think I will cling onto that for a while.

Tanith · 13/12/2019 11:27

Just seen that Ann Widdecombe lost to a gay Remainer Smile

prettybird · 13/12/2019 11:28

Listened to someone on Sky News (think it was Michael Hammond) saying that "the EU is not keen on secession" so wouldn't want to let Scotland join. He used Catalonia Asan example.

a) Catalonia is a different case as it has never been an independent country Confused plus the Spanish constitution explicitly prohibits it Hmm

b) Spain has already said that as long as Scotland follows due (legal) process, it has no objection to Scotland joining Confused

c) and most relevantly if the EU doesn't believe in secession, why are both Slovakia and the Czech Republic members? Confused

Alsohuman · 13/12/2019 11:30

Just seen that Ann Widdecombe lost to a gay Remainer

Now that has cheered me up.

Tanith · 13/12/2019 11:36

I'd be interested to know how many people used vote swapping websites and pacts. Is it just me who thinks it is naïve beyond belief to trust a stranger to vote on your behalf?

DrBlackbird · 13/12/2019 11:37

Tanith thank you oh thank you for the only feeling of cheer this morning Grin

Mintjulia · 13/12/2019 11:42

With Corbyn gone, now Labour can rebuild, reposition, have clear policies and no fence-sitting.
No-one was in any doubt on Nicola Sturgeon’s views and look at her results.

amd4578 · 13/12/2019 11:43

Random18 it is finally nice to hear someone that does not have such a depressing view... I did not like either leader but some of you seem to be willing the tories to fail and in doing so are willing the suffering of the very people you claim you are worried about.

Yes we can be disappointed but it is democracy and I can sit here and say that I do hope Boris steps up and proves everyone wrong.

At least at the next election it will be about our country and the whole Brexit issue will be behind us. This result was not a failing of the British people who voted it was a failing of the lib dems and Labour in their stubbornness on the Brexit issue!

Random18 · 13/12/2019 11:45

piggy the fundamental values between Scots and other Brits are not very different.

Scotland is different because it is it's own country.

But its demographic on the whole is similar to that of the North of England.

The people are the same- all primarily left wing.

Scotland is different in that we vote for SNP and independence when we are unhappy with our lot.

North of England voted for Brexit.

Scotland voted for Tories in 2017 which was a protest vote against SNP imo.

England has voted for Tories in 2019. As I say Scotland is always a couple of years ahead!

But fundamentally I don't see how the values of a Scot are different than that of someone English.

AuldAlliance · 13/12/2019 11:48

At least at the next election it will be about our country and the whole Brexit issue will be behind us.

The Brexit issue really will not be behind anyone by the time the next election comes around.

lonelyplanetmum · 13/12/2019 11:49

I just paid a parking fine from earlier this week. I had paid to park on Ringo..without realising my bit was a loading bay. So I did the right thing.

But why should I? Why?

The nation rewards people who do the wrong thing :
• People Who lie in 88% of their electioneering ads.
• people who Mislead the country & colleagues over Brexit sector analyses.
• People who Extended a parliamentary session over two years to avoid a Queen’s Speech.
• People who chose a leader who has shown high disloyalty and deception even to those he allegedly loves.
• People who Sneakily loafed joint committees with majorities.
•People who Avoided public debate.
• People who Avoided votes on opposition motions, and then disregarded the motions passed.
• People who Tried to notify Article 50 without due parliamentary process.
• People who Ignore the law to such an extent they were held to be in contempt of parliament and imposed an unlawful five-week prorogation.
• People who Shafted an MP on maternity leave to betray a pairing vote.
• People who Broke election spending rules and suppressed a report on Russian interference.

People who disregard rules are those that the nation admire- so why should I pay an effing parking fine?

TheElementsSong · 13/12/2019 11:49

Maybe we'll see a brake on the gender self-ID wokey shite. That would be another tiny ray of light.

Piggywaspushed · 13/12/2019 11:52

RTB where's that 3D map thing when you need it!?

We'll have to agree to disagree on that random.

QueenOfThorns · 13/12/2019 11:53

Does anybody know whether I’d be able to vote in a Labour leadership contest if I joined now? I’d prefer Starmer or Cooper personally.

lonelyplanetmum · 13/12/2019 11:53

with a majority of over 60 Johnson has a certain amount to play for. Francois and JRM can swing.

I so hope this is true but how do we know that dozens of the new incumbents aren't Francois and JRM on steroids? At the end of the day they stood for a part that had kicked out moderates.

thecatfromjapan · 13/12/2019 11:54

An actual question:

How many people on here discussing Labour's next leader are actual Labour members?
