Exit poll

Con majority of 68.

65 seats regarded technically as still too close to call. But that could mean an even bigger majority.

Blyth Valley has seen a 10% swing to the cons in line with the exit poll. 1st shock of the night

Like you're stupid supporting Johnson and his cabinet Cendrillon? I'd say we're motivated by pretty similar things. Except all you apparently care about is winning and fuck the rest.

Farage may regret not standing down candidates in some of these northern leave strongholds.

hmmm let me think about that...

...checks exit poll...

... nope he won't

I’m finding it strangely soothing listening to John Bercow on Sky News

toomuchtrouble they have - just a right wing one

Toomuch disagree. Those that voted Tory were simply wanting the Leave referendum to be carried out.
If Labour had a remainer leader or stood on a remain ticket I think the thrashing would have been even worse.

Brexit represents, as a poster upthread, radical change. But a change for the better or for the worse?

Is it a case of any change is better than no change?

But then if the Tories are the ones who have been in government for the past several years, then aren't they the ones who have disenfranchised these voters from Northern constituencies? So in this respect it doesn't make sense

lonelyplanetmum · 13/12/2019 00:15

It's weird isn't it. Fear of the UKIP/Brexit party helped drive the Tories to their ERG right.

And now the Brexit party dictate how Tory/Labour do in the marginals.

Faragism is the tail that does too much wagging. I'm now of the view it would be better if they had at least one MP. Bring them out in the open and expose their blinkered laziness and mendacity.

The North want it, London don't.

That might bet true at a population level, but I'm delurking to say that there are an awful lot of northerners who are never wanted brexit, hate tories, think papers like the S*n are actively harmful and will be generally depressed at a massive Johnson majority.

The exit poll looks awful, but please try to remember that there are literally millions of people across every possible divide who will working, willing and wishing for a future where we rejoin the EU.

Thanks to RTB and all those who are following the election and updating results. I am keeping up-to date here rather than watching on TV. I can't bear all the talking heads.

They feel Labour have become too Urban, politically correct and pro immigration.

That's been the case since the Blair years and "Champagne socialism". The difference is that he managed to hold on to traditional Labour-voting areas too.

To be fair, there does still need to be a party that represents those of us that are urban, politically correct and pro-immigration. I've read several articles over the last year about the new political split to be open-closed (ie pro free trade, immigration etc against isolationism, closed borders) rather than the traditional left-right. Seems to be the way things have gone in the US too. I don't know what that means for the Labour Party.

I really think this is much more that Corbyn lost than that Boris won.
Agree with this

People just won't vote for such an extremist.
Don't exactly agree on this. More than that.

I don't believe a different Labour leader would have made much difference tbh. The only reason people mentioned Corbyn on the doorsteps is that they have been bombarded with negative coverage. If you sling enough mud etc.

He doesn't seem to be a good leader in that he doesn't seem forceful enough to me, nor fluent enough, nor 'on top of the figures enough'. But I don't see what a different Labour leader could have done about Brexit except put all that campaigning energy into Remain. Labour were caught between not wanting to alienate Leavers and knowing that Brexit would make people poorer.

Didn't think Conservatives voted to become poorer so can't quite get my head around that one, though I suppose working class conservatives do it all the time.

What I really don't get is the massive overwhelming sentiment of "Labour lost because Corbyn is inept and prejudiced".... but then voted in Boris Johnson. Probably the only politician in the country that you could argue is MORE inept and prejudiced. Makes no sense to me.

Whatever people say about Corbyn and compare him to other Labour leaders in the past or possible alternatives, his treatment by the MSM etc etc, he may have been smeared, others may have done badly if they'd been leader. But Jeremy Corbyn has handed a lot of it to people on a plate.

This would have been ok"

Don't forget that we are NOT logical, however much we like to think we are. Humans make decision based on emotions, physical urges, 'intuition' masquerading as logic, etc

This would have been "ok" as a result in 2017, where I would have preferred Labour to have not done as well as they did then, and Corbyn would have gone. However, I absolutely do not regret voting Labour and Corbyn today.

In its box until Brexit sends the economy over the cliff - so next GE

or of course, BJ could back down again and go for a softer Brexit

it will be interesting to observe which he chooses....
