Exit poll

Con majority of 68.

65 seats regarded technically as still too close to call. But that could mean an even bigger majority.

Blyth Valley has seen a 10% swing to the cons in line with the exit poll. 1st shock of the night

Labour need a red 'Tory light ' Blair sort in the future. It's the only language the British people seem to ' get'
Either that or they are completely finished.

I'm sad to see Corbyn go , but it's all for the best. He can concentrate on his allotment and the party can get their act together at last : New Years resolution ; get someone different and new and with some policies people can get behind.
I'm sorry for the mumsnetters who believed he could defeat the tories but it wasn't to be.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 13/12/2019 06:41

Nobody is being smeared but to think british politics hasn't been mired in dog whistles and xenophobia since 2016 is deluded.

BigChocFrenzy · 13/12/2019 06:41

"the calibre of Skinner"

My only surprise is that he wasn't booted out years ago
All he did was rant

I'm a centrist, so I despise the hard left and the hard right
Unfortunately, the hard right won today

Peregrina · 13/12/2019 06:43

I am surprised that Skinner stood again. When he was younger I believe he was a good constituency MP, but his time has passed. I take it they have a Tory MP now - I wonder if he will even show his face in the Constituency?

mathanxiety · 13/12/2019 06:43

So how do you explain the vote for the Tories in disadvantaged areas that have been hit so hard by Tory austerity, BovaryX?

Stop teasing us with your hints at why Labour lost. Tell us what it was in the Tory message that helped voters in the north of England to forget Universal Credit and the homeless and the screeching halt to social mobility.

BigChocFrenzy · 13/12/2019 06:44

After the Tories lost in 1997 - which was a much, much worse defeat - they didn't suddenly abandon Tory policies, say they were all wrong and adopt Labour ones

They didn't say that Labour were the political centre

They kept Tory policies until finally their turn came again - Blair screwed up on Iraq - and they won

Labour obviously won't take advice from rightwing Tories who want them destroyed permanently

The pendulum always swings back eventually
They need to settle in for the long term

Although with Brexit, that probably won't be the 3 terms the Tories had to wait in Opposition

stayfit · 13/12/2019 06:44

Labour abandoned their traditional working class vote and became the party of immigrants, tonight they're paying the price... :(

BovaryX · 13/12/2019 06:45

Leave voters have been repeatedly caricatured as old and white. That assertion is racist and Labour have been decimated in this election by, inter alia, Leave voters who are neither old nor white.

Peregrina · 13/12/2019 06:45

Corbyn for me is far too London centric - as is Johnson. There is a whole world outside London.

mathanxiety · 13/12/2019 06:46

Labour need a red 'Tory light ' Blair sort in the future. It's the only language the British people seem to ' get'
Either that or they are completely finished.

That would be the English people there. And the Welsh, for reasons known only to themselves.

The Scots and Irish speak a different language entirely.

The80sweregreat · 13/12/2019 06:46

My son and I are upset , but I knew it would happen.
All we do now is wait and see how things pan out.

mathanxiety · 13/12/2019 06:47

Leave voters have been repeatedly caricatured as old and white.

That has been proved beyond any doubt by many studies of the Referendum.

It's not a caricature.

CendrillonSings · 13/12/2019 06:47

Benjamin Butterworth
@benjaminbutter

Incredible: Laura Pidcock has lost her seat to the Tories. That means next year's Durham Miners' Gala will be held in a Tory constituency.

The political centre shifts...

Peregrina · 13/12/2019 06:48

I would say that a significant number of Leave voters are old and white. Don't forget that a lot of them are South of England Tories whose average age is something like 70 and they are predominantly male and white.

Peregrina · 13/12/2019 06:49

And the Welsh, for reasons known only to themselves.

They say that the Welsh Leave vote was won by English retiree incomers.

borntobequiet · 13/12/2019 06:49

But Leave voters are predominantly older and white. And with fewer academic qualifications. Stating facts isn’t racist caricature, ageist or anything else.
I’m an old white woman. That’s not a caricature, that’s me.

BigChocFrenzy · 13/12/2019 06:49

"Labour abandoned their traditional working class vote and became the party of immigrants, tonight they're paying the price.."

Of course you're not against immigrants .....

The80sweregreat · 13/12/2019 06:49

Labour will rise again , but it will take years.
The weather is horrible today and suits my mood but we have to carry on as there isn't much alternative really.
I'm so sorry it's such a crushing defeat though.

mathanxiety · 13/12/2019 06:50

Labour have been decimated in this election by, inter alia, Leave voters who are neither old nor white.

Labour lost votes to people who would have voted for the Brexit Party if they had run.

Nigel Farage managed to move the agenda of British political discourse a long way from what was accepted as civilised even ten years ago.

Remember this?
images.app.goo.gl/VBVz3c2EdyeMsShT9

The Tories kicked out MPs who objected to this kind of execrable fascism.

BovaryX · 13/12/2019 06:51

You know math, I find your posts offensive. You have made repeated insinuations that Conservative voters are racist and stupid. Labour lost because of their myriad failures. And your response is to trot out insults. About people you have never met.

Peregrina · 13/12/2019 06:52

I’m an old white woman. That’s not a caricature, that’s me.

So am I, but I don't fit the stereotype by not being a Leave voter. Oh and I probably have more academic qualifications than the average for my age group. But that's just a fact - a lot of my generation were undereducated and could have done much better had the opportunities been presented to them.

BovaryX · 13/12/2019 06:52

Math, I find your attitude really offensive. Not everyone who voted Brexit and Conservative is white. Stop tossing around insults.

mathanxiety · 13/12/2019 06:53

Well they voted for Tories in this election, Peregrina, so it's hard to tell exactly what they are thinking. Could it be all retirees?

DustyDiamond · 13/12/2019 06:54

Actually, it seems just the 'poorly educated' of England and Wales.

C'mon lads!

It always works if you slag them off!

It's a fail safe strategy!

Call them thick & they don't give a fuck! They'll still vote for us!

.....or not..... 🥀

frumpety · 13/12/2019 06:54

So Brexit ? whats next then ? Boris has to get some parliamentary stuff done before Christmas , then what ?
