Exit poll

Con majority of 68.

65 seats regarded technically as still too close to call. But that could mean an even bigger majority.

Blyth Valley has seen a 10% swing to the cons in line with the exit poll. 1st shock of the night

The reason you didn't see this result coming is because of your insistence on this "hard right" rubbish, whereas as a matter of empirical fact the Conservatives now occupy the political centre of this country

Well said. It comes from occupying an echo chamber where assertions which are patently false are accepted. Also, in light of this spectacular defeat, intstead of asking why constituencies that voted Labour for a hundred years have gone Conservative? It’s call voters stupid and racist. The lack of self analysis is staggering

mathanxiety · 13/12/2019 06:27

Cendrillon, the fact is that the Overton window has been moved so far Right that it is in danger of running out of space on that side of the board. If the Conservatives look like a centrist party to you, that is why. They are a Right Libertarian Nationalist party.

BigChocFrenzy · 13/12/2019 06:29

Cendrillon I kept posting I expected a Tory win, just not this size

and don't be ridiculous:
winning a GE does not make the Tories the political centre, any more than it made Thatcher a centrist

I don't know if you are old enough to remember the Conservative party of Ted Heath, or of John Major,
or even of Thatcher

This is by far the most rightwing Tory party in modern political history
Far to the right of a typical conservative party elsewhere in Europe

TheElementsSong · 13/12/2019 06:30

Well, happy Friday the 13th, everyone.

I'm baffled that anyone who could mourn the defeat of the hard left Skinner doesn't see how far right this Tory party is,
in comparison to any of its predecessors

BovaryX · 13/12/2019 06:30

What utter rubbish. Name one ‘far right’ policy?

frumpety · 13/12/2019 06:31

Beth Rigby making the point that it was the team behind vote leave, in Downing Street, who have been instrumental in the Conservatives success at this election. Snappy Get Brexit Done slogan, Boris always without fail saying it over and over again, when he was allowed to talk to anyone. A risk free manifesto. I think she also implied the same team was basically running the government ?

So there we have it, a Conservative majority, was hoping for a much smaller majority or a hung parliament. Very interesting times ahead and probably not in a good way.Wonder how the markets will react ?

Peregrina · 13/12/2019 06:31

I haven't read the thread because I have just come back from the Count.

Enjoy your gloating Cendrillon, because the Brexit you get will be a Tory Brexit, and when it fails you, you will only have yourself to blame.

However, I personally can hold my head up high, because in Oxford West and Abingdon, we increased the Lib Dem majority by 8127, so I will be able to say that it wasn't me who voted for the Tories.

A country led by dog whistles, xenophobia and fear isn't hard right? Okaaay.

This attitude is why Labour has gone down to its worst defeat in decades.

BovaryX · 13/12/2019 06:33

Your bafflement suggests a rigid tribalism. I am Conservative. That doesn’t mean I don’t have respect for Labour politicians of the caliber of Dennis Skinner. I might not agree with his politics, but I am sad to see him go.

Smug tories everywhere I look.
Nightmare on Downing Street indeed.
At least the SNP had a good night.

DustyDiamond · 13/12/2019 06:34

So Labour lost because of backing Remain

No

Because they game-played like fuckers for 3 years & tried to subvert Brexit at every opportunity

They voted against TMs WA, they fucked around with indicative votes, they did not act in good faith

They took their working class leave voters for granted 🤷🏻‍♀️

Add that heady mix to Corbyn's personal failings & limitations, & his enabling of a toxic cesspit of hate & division, and Robert's your mother's brother! Et voila! Nae fucker wants you anywhere near power 🤷🏻‍♀️

CendrillonSings · 13/12/2019 06:34

Oh, I'm enjoying it immensely. Tell me more about how the polls mean nothing.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 13/12/2019 06:35

Because I want to live a country free of bigotry and hatred I am somehow responsible for the election result?

BovaryX · 13/12/2019 06:35

^A country led by dog whistles, xenophobia and fear isn't hard right? Okaaay.

Cendrillon, insulting voters and spurious accusations of racism have become second nature to some Labour supporters. I tell you what is racist. The assumption that Leave voters and Conservative voters are white.

Peregrina · 13/12/2019 06:37

But strangely the Tory winner in Henley, talked about One Nation Conservatism. Now of course, his idea of one nation, isn't mine, but I suspect that it won't please a lot of the Brexit voters either.

Don't forget that Johnson and Rees-Mogg were more than happy to vote against May's WA.

CendrillonSings · 13/12/2019 06:37

winning a GE does not make the Tories the political centre

Since we now have more than 150 seats more than the next largest party, I would say that it bloody well does!

GhostofFrankGrimes · 13/12/2019 06:38

Someone doesn't understand political ideology...

mathanxiety · 13/12/2019 06:38

Well there's an indefensible assertion if ever there was one.

What evidence do you have apart from the word 'racist' that people here are talking about white British voters, BovaryX?

CendrillonSings · 13/12/2019 06:39

Because I want to live a country free of bigotry and hatred I am somehow responsible for the election result?

Because you smear those who disagree with you as bigoted and hateful, an awful lot of them buggered off and joined the Tories yesterday - in gigantic numbers.

BovaryX · 13/12/2019 06:39

If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck and votes for racist libertarians who think Brexit is a good thing, then maybe stupid and racist is an apt description

Keep calling voters stupid and racist for refusing to vote Labour. Your attitude typifies a vocal faction of Labour. And Labour have got the result they richly deserved.

mathanxiety · 13/12/2019 06:41

Erm no, it actually doesn't, Cendrillon.
