Keeping this short. This is the Brexit fall out thread.

The one where we might get another glimpse of what Brexit means.

I'll post an election special thread shortly with links to various times and important seats (I wont get it done before the other thread fills so this is also a stop gap but please try and use the election special thread for today's events instead of Westminstenders when it goes live)

I'm just at a friend's nagging her to vote.

She thought she couldn't as she hadn't sent her postal vote in.

So if anyone says that, let them know they can still vote with their postal vote at the polling station.

RedToothBrush · 12/12/2019 10:09

My polling station was empty (DH has voted, I havent as I'm using it as excuse to take mate). I have to go back later.

My polling station is usually busy. Its a strong Tory / LD area so this isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Peregrina · 12/12/2019 10:13

I.e. take their postal vote to the polling station.
I have just voted for myself, and those I am proxy for. There was a much longer list of proxy voters this time.

PeninsulaPanic · 12/12/2019 10:17

Just to add, I'm in receipt of ESA and PIP and HB, and my prognosis means my need in that respect is unlikely to change. I'm single, 50+, and I rent. I have more reason than many to fear a tory majority tomorrow, but I feel calm today. Something just feels right somehow, can't explain it and I haven't been expecting this feeling of peace. Whatever things look like in the morning, it won't mean the ending many of us have dreaded and felt powerless about.

Feeling a lot of solidarity in the air Smile

lonelyplanetmum · 12/12/2019 10:17

But I’d like to send best wishes and solidarity to all those people who feel extreme anxiety about their futures right now.

Just remember that taking the last poll figures more than half of the electorate don't want a Tory government. Millions and millions of people stand with those feeling anxious etc.

So even though the new Tory Party will win (due to the voting system) they do only have minority support.

Just on the survation poll it is 52.5% who oppose the Torys.

LAB 33.7
LD 9.3
GRE 3.2
SNP 4.0
PC 1.4
AP 0.9

prettybird · 12/12/2019 10:18

I think Nicola could have emphasised even more that those that don't want independence can still vote No in an Indyref2 - and that it's up to the independence supporting parties (ie it's not just the SNP Confused) to make the case during that campaign.

Actually, she did, regularly - but the MSM chose not to repeat those clips. Hmm

Random18 · 12/12/2019 10:18

peregrina there was someone doing Proxy voting in front of me.

I've never been aware of that happening before.

My polling station was busy. I've not had to queue before - did today.

TheABC · 12/12/2019 10:21

Really busy at the polling station today in my place. We are usually a Labour constituency, but the old incumbent stood down due to ill health. I think the replacement candidate has a good chance.

WhatwouldScoobyDoo · 12/12/2019 10:24

Voted. Not very busy but we went early (7.30 ish). Will walk past later and see if it’s got busier. Thanks for the metro link DGR , good to see so much engagement in London!

QueenMabby · 12/12/2019 10:28

Busy at ours too. And the one where I do my morning exercise class. Lots of ancient Tory types. Mums at my exercise class horrified I didn’t vote Conservative. I’m horrified they did.

averylongtimeago · 12/12/2019 10:30

Busy at our poling station too- no queue but a steady stream of people. Rural ward in the west mids, our MP is absolutely useless and a member of the ERG. With tactical voting there is a slim chance of getting rid of him.
Lots of support for the labour candidate on FB - from LD people too.

I have never felt so afraid about the results of an election before. What has happened to our politics? I might not have agreed with Thatcher or Major, but at least you could think they were honest and genuinely believed they were doing the best for the country as a whole.
The current batch of Torys just seem downright evil.

Thanks, red 💐

Expectation by many analysts is for a v quick & dirty bare bones FTA with the EU, only dealing with tariffs and quotas, no services.
That kind of deal need only be ratified by the EP and 27 heads of govt, not all the national & regional Parliaments

Even to do that by 31 December 2020 would require another cave-in by BJ, as on the NI frontstop

However, he may do so quite quickly, as he - and his backers - only care about the US FTA and the USA - like every other country will want to know the terms of the EU FTA before agreeing any deal.

The EU would be quite happy with this kind of deal, as they have a large trade surplus but a services deficit with the UK
Strangely, it's the "pure" FTA that most hard Brexiters claim to want, for their "Britannia Unchained",
regardless of what it means for the UK economy and balance of payments.

Feel bad to post about the election here, but can’t see a special thread.
Weather forecast is bad, but getting worse, hence people voting this morning.
Cant believe that Yougov poll expects Cheltenham to stay Conservative. Surely the Libdems will manage that one, their candidate seems like a good egg.
More I look at that poll, the more I think you can’t extrapolate percentages out . Sure there will be lots of surprises

Police helpfully reminding the current conservative of the rules about standing outside and campaigning at a polling station. Thank you, officer!

"A Kinnock in '92 for the new generation"

I know that Labour supporters felt terrible then,
but personally as a centrist I was NOT worried by the prospect of 5 years of John Major.

He was a decent bloke who respected the constitution and legal process
He didn't win by lies and dirty tricks, but by good solid campaigning, leading from the front.

This GE is different:

First of course, the Tories are expected to win a majority - the question is more of what size.

There are many reasons to be worried about BJ that never applied to John Major:

BJ is a chronic liar, who uses the big lie tactics & threats of fascist demagogues
He and his hard right gang plan to squash dissent, like no other peacetime UK govt has done,
to abolish legal safeguards & weaken human rights,
to make a bonfire of laws on workers & consumer rights, of rights for the disabled and of women with DC,
to gerrymander the next elections so the other parties will have a mountain to climb
to sign us up to a US FTA with longterm penalty clauses that will tie us to the USA like a colony

dontcallmelen · 12/12/2019 11:13

BCF that just sums it up doesn’t, was just discussing this with a friend on how if it was the old Conservatives, would be a bit pissed off they won but certainly wouldn’t be terrified of what would happen, so sad that as a country this is what will become of us.

rogueantimatter · 12/12/2019 11:21

Strong turnout at my polling station so far.

I'm annoying myself by not managing to settle to getting on with anything. It's not going to change anything.

rogueantimatter · 12/12/2019 11:22

Oh I missed a chunk of posts Blush

dontcallmelen · 12/12/2019 11:23

rogue yy I’m the same, keep wandering from room to room but not actually doing anything.

Hard Brexiters claim they would rely on WTO rules - but Trump has just broken the WTO

He does not tolerate the USA being forced to obey international law - he barely obeys even US law
Hence he has smashed the WTO court, so that now no country can be protected by it

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2019/12/11/britain-must-fight-fix-wto-late/

Ever since President Trump’s election, the World Trade Organisation has been bracing itself for this week.

The process of appointing WTO judges to preside over trade dispute appeals has been blocked by the president’s representatives in Geneva,
citing a range of concerns around sovereignty and judicial overreach.

On Monday a last-ditch attempt to address those concerns failed to gain the consensus needed.

Last night the situation finally came to a head, as the terms of two of the three remaining judges expired, leaving the organisation’s Appellate Body without the quorum needed to hear cases

I'm off work today with this damned virus. Already voted via post.

I'm going to have a nap ready for tonight. I feel duty bound to stay up as whenever I go to sleep something bad happens (brexit and trump)
