Westminstenders: The Undecideds

Apparently the pollsters are nervous.

There are far more undecided than there have been at this stage in recent general election.

This makes it a hugely fine line between a hung parliament and a massive tory majority.

The weather on Thursday isn't expected to be nice and this could affect turnout. The blue corner are particularly nervous about this, but don't forget those postal votes.

Whatever happens on Thursday at least this election campaign is nearly over. And that can't be a bad thing.

And Christmas is in a fortnight so we can all drown our sorrows or celebrate in style.

You always have time to restock the drinks if you end up resort to them on Thursday

(New election special thread on Thursday rather than bunging up Westminstenders BTW)

Has anyone heard any leaks from the yougov poll yet?

Hyperbole matters because it legitimises others who believe it to be true.

It's like Johnson saying he's OK to say certain things about race, religion or nationality because he knows people know he doesn't really mean it and hey it was a joke anyway.

Seriously.

Someone reading that might think that it's fair game for them to shout at another candidate cos those damn lefties boast on social media about how they shouted at the Tory.

This affects people. It's not a trivial little throwaway comment, regardless of whether you try and make it out to be.

There are MPs who can't do open surgeries or have had to hire security for their own protection at the moment.

Did you miss the memo on that one?

My ability to cope with strongly-expressed opinions has diminished quite a lot since being verbally abused and nearly punched in the doorstep.

☹️

I'm sure it's water off a duck's back to Boris Johnson - but it's a kind of hell for people like me.

Piggywaspushed · 10/12/2019 21:36

I wouldn't do either of those things cat. I am very very polite to people who turn up on my doorstep. I have never called anyone a nasty name!

Sorry if I upset anyone. But I don't think I upset the candidate!

thecatfromjapan · 10/12/2019 21:37

Anyway, Sayeeda Warsi. That woman just evolves.

It's hope-bringing.

She's giving her thoughts on the Nimco Ali- Owen Jones video-exchange that has been on Twitter, in which OJ asks NC her opinion of Johnson's infamous 'bum boys' comments.

So, Warsi has tweeted:

Sayeeda Warsi
@SayeedaWarsi

'This is an interesting watch 👇🏽
And for the record “bum boy” is a crass homophobic phrase - there is no context in which a political leader should think such a statement is appropriate or acceptable.
We must be united in calling out all forms of bigotry 🤝'

lonelyplanetmum · 10/12/2019 21:39

Just for the record, neither Boris Johnson nor anyone from No.10, Tory Central Office or anyone else has expressed their condolences towards my family since my son #JackMerritt was killed in London Bridge terror attack on 29 November, contrary to what No.10 told Sky News today.

Worthy of repetition. Millions of people think it's ok do they?
To have a government that pretend to have expressed condolences to a grieving family. WHEN THEY HAVE NOT.

TiddleTaddleTat · 10/12/2019 21:41

Don't want to get too excited but the pound is looking a little lower over the past couple of hours, may suggest a change in the latest yougov MRP poll (formally released at 10pm)

Quick question for the hive mind - which is the most reliable news website for FACTS ?

JustAnotherPoster00 · 10/12/2019 21:47

You ok Red? Youre coming across a bit belligerent today in my eyes? Sorry if thats inaccurate

HateIsNotGood · 10/12/2019 21:53

Just thought I'd let you know RTB that in most Councils, the elected representatives don't receive Salaries, but Allowances. You mention Borough Councillors and their "salaries" of 20k. Maybe, somehow, somewhere.

There are various levels of elected Governance - some areas have more tiers than others - some are 2 and some are 3 - urban areas tend to have 2 and rural 3 (although many variations).

Most 3 tiers consist of County, District and Town/Parish Councils.

Most Parish Councillors receive no £ at all for their time and only claim 'expenses' for costly items. They choose to do this for the good of their communities, not just in the evenings but during the day too - not many people are able to do that.

Moving up a Tier to District Council - the max that any Councillor has received is 10k, most receiving less than 5k - this includes all of their out of pocket expenses, additional responsiblities and their time. They have to turn out days, evenings, weekends.

Who wants to do that? How many people can do that?

lonelyplanetmum · 10/12/2019 21:53

Since this debacle I'm nervous now about sources. You have to browse news sources imo.

The FT, Guardian, NY times, Washington Post, Al Jazeera, Economist, BBC ( cautiously ), Huffpost, Wall Street journal, Fullfact, politics.co.uk ?

TiddleTaddleTat · 10/12/2019 21:56

Looks like the latest yougov MRP predicts a Tory majority around 30

thecatfromjapan · 10/12/2019 21:56

I can see exactly where Red's coming from. And I don't want to single any poster out but she is absolutely right.

Sadly, the way things are going is ... down. Just down.

The more it becomes OK to erode that circle of respect - however legitimate it seems (and believe me - I get why people are angry: we are being gaslighted to all hell by media), the closer we get to actual violence.

And - believe me - it's the progressives who will be most likely to suffer.

Really.

I know that sounds like I don't care about non-progressives. I do. But facts do seem to point to the progressives ultimately carrying a disproportionate cost.

And it will be the unprotected that carry the cost.

It's a massive ask, considering what we are being asked to tolerate, but I swear we have to hold the line - be outstanding - or it all falls apart.

thecatfromjapan · 10/12/2019 21:57

Oh no.

Is it out, then, TiddleTaddle?

Hell.

Icantreachthepretzels · 10/12/2019 21:59

Thanks to everyone who's signed/ shared. It's not over until 10 pm on Thursday and we can make a difference. And - as we're so very close to the day, if there are any lurkers who have only just stumbled across these threads

comparethetacticals.com/ find out who to tactically vote for to get a tory out in your constituency.
It only takes 40 000 tactical votes to stop Boris getting his majority. Well over 20 000 people have already signed that petition. The votes are there - we just to need to use them wisely.

TokyoSushi · 10/12/2019 22:00

Bracing for MRP and hoping RTB will decipher it!

chomalungma · 10/12/2019 22:00

I presume some people have heard of Amy Siskind and 'The list'. Things that aren't normal since Trump came to power.

We really need to do something similar in the UK. Because what is happening in this election is not normal.

RedToothBrush · 10/12/2019 22:01

I'm pissed off at people thinking that it's fair game to joke, exaggerate or otherwise suggest it's OK to shout at candidates.

And I'm pissed off at people suggesting that those fed up of the above are somehow weak or letting someone down for deciding they can't and don't want put up with that kind of behavior.

The degree to which it's regarded as fair game to abuse people standing for election is depressing. Even if you don't agree with someone that's not OK because it comes back and drives the good people out of politics and leaves it to those happy to indulge and engage into this race to the bottom in public life.

This isn't something that is 'just on the internet'. This affects people out there. Some of whom I am friends with.

The more this is normalised the less you are hearing about incidents. That doesn't mean that they aren't happening. There is a real life impact to all this.

ClashCityRocker · 10/12/2019 22:01

If you're not thoroughly sceptical about any news source by now, you haven't been paying attention Grin

It is getting worse though, isn't it? My granda always told me never to just read one paper, so I know bias has always been a thing, but some of the levels of disinformation recently have been truly shocking.

It must make people disengage. How do you get the truth out when a lot of people are now thinking everything is a lie?
