Westminsterenders: Talent or Colour

RTB and BCF are presumably busy with more important things. I'm clearly not qualified to start a Westminsterenders thread - but somebody has to take control and collect the waifs and strays.

The party of no talent want to introduce no colour into our lives.

6 days to the election.

Johnson is still a liar.

Corbyn is still apparently loved by Labour members and hated by everyone else.

Swinson is still a charming PTA chair.

In 2015, Clegg was very naive, got taken in by Cameron's pretence at a liberal conservative image and negotiated a crap deal.
Brexit was not a topic even on the horizon

in 2019, every MP in the HoC knows BJ is a lying weasel, that the Tories plan a v hard Brexit and a Bonfire of Regulations / Protections
Even Swinson is not going to enable a hard Brexit just to get LDems into govt

She - or quite possibly her successor if the SNP take her seat - would demand that a referendum be written down as the first Bill to go through the new Parliament

Since BJ has no principles except Boris First, there is a small chance he might even agree (!), so he can stay PM

  • but I actually would be quite happy with the Tories owning a 2nd ref

Far more likely however is a Remain GNU - maybe with Corbyn staying Labour leader, but stepping aside to let someone else be PM

These are the people we are fighting.

They will not make distinctions between us - so let's hold together against them.

Was just coming to post that Just, it’s cheered me up a bit. It’s hung Parliament territory, isn’t it?

Oakenbeach · 07/12/2019 17:02

I just can’t see LD forming an alliance with the Tories. It’d be electoral suicide after last time, but also their Brexit policies are diametrically opposed. They’d not be able to compromise on it.

I agree... It nearly destroyed them in 2010... If they repeat it, it would kill them off. They might as well write a suicide note, and they will be acutely aware of that!

ListeningQuietly · 07/12/2019 17:03

Justanother
Those poll numbers have to be wrong
as they only add up to 95%
and +4 +1 and -1 do not even out

ListeningQuietly · 07/12/2019 17:04

The LibDems are not planning another coalition
I do wish people would shut up about it

Swinson has said she would "work with" other parties on a vote by vote basis
not the same thing AT ALL

thecatfromjapan · 07/12/2019 17:06

To be crystal clear: The Sun carries an article, supposedly outlining a Far Left conspiracy in the Labour Party.

It was drawn from Far Right sources.

It contained things we know well: Labour is part of a Soros plot(!!!).

Seriously, this is scary.

We are in a bad, bad place.

The article was removed - eventually - after many people pointed out it was probably illegal, certainly Far Right propaganda, and potentially dangerous.

But ... it was there. Someone wrote it, edited it, published it.

I'm a mainstream paper - not some nutty dark corner of the internet.

People - we need to come together.

We are already too late, too few, too poor. But we have to do this.

MistiMorning · 07/12/2019 17:07

Some advice please - how would you lot vote in an SNP/Labour marginal? There was very little in it in 2017 and I'm torn.

Depends on your stance on independence, and whether there is any risk of splitting the vote and letting the Tories in down the middle. As a unionist I would vote Labour but that's a personal judgement call.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 07/12/2019 17:07

It’s hung Parliament territory, isn’t it?

Its the highest weve been in Savanta

Listening take it up with election maps not me Grin

Oakenbeach · 07/12/2019 17:11

Interesting poll from ComRes.... That would be edging onto hung parliament territory.

The important thing is how the vote is apportioned in seats, and how tactical the voting is. I would imagine there are a large number of voters who would side either with Labour or LD depending on who’s most likely to win the seat. If that’s the case, it’s not surprising the LD vote is being squeezed. Also, the total Labour and LD vote now equals that in 2017!

DGRossetti · 07/12/2019 17:11

I know TAATs are verboten, but has anyone seen the questions floating around in one thread in AIBU that shows how little people know about the democracy they place their lives - and the lives of their children - into ?

my 35 year old sister, who has voted multiple times, rang me up to say her postal vote was wrong, because she couldn’t see Jeremy Corbyn, Boris Johnson et al on there, and wanted to know what mine said!

MaxNormal · 07/12/2019 17:14

MistiMorning no risk of the Tories here, I'm broadly pro Indy now but the priority for me is keeping the Tories from getting a majority.

dontcallmelen · 07/12/2019 17:20

SNP?

DGRossetti · 07/12/2019 17:23

Just to balance the cat ratio here, and maybe to help take some minds off the increasing fizz, did anyone see the amazing documentary about a lone wolf in Canada ?

If Boris promised to reintroduce wolves to the UK, that's my vote bought ....

DGRosetti
Yup, that was a most excellent programme.

The other one I've been watching when I need low stress TV is this series

Asking for help.

My parents - both in their 80s - live in a Con/Lab marginal. How do I persuade my father - a long time Lib Dem member - to vote Labour?

He voted leave 'to get back sovereignty'. He was a Labour voter before going to the Lib Dems - and I'm pretty sure he would never vote Conservative despite voting for Brexit in the referendum.

I need two or three lines to drip into messages and emails in the next few days. What should I say to him?

ListeningQuietly · 07/12/2019 17:50

Ultimate
How hale and hearty are they ?
Do they want to be charged lots when they need health care and social/nursing home care ?
Or do they want it funded through taxation shared between everybody?

MistiMorning · 07/12/2019 17:51

Ultimate - do the candidates help here? Eg a Tory with a terrible record vs a moderate Labour candidate?

squid4 · 07/12/2019 17:54

Can I just clarify, it's not increased youth turnout that would reduce the tory's poll lead by as much as 12% in some polls. It's the same youth turnout as 2017 which would do so. Pollsters are predicting based on previous elections to 2017. I think there is one exception to this (BMG?) which is based on 2017 turnouts.

No one has attempted to predict what would happen with an increased youth turnout, and no one has factored in deaths/voters turning 18 since 2017.

58% of under 35s voted in 2017. 60% currently say they are 100% certain to vote.

Hope that helps Smile

Now I have some children to put to bed, and some wine to drink and some sleep to catch up on.

chomalungma · 07/12/2019 17:57

60% currently say they are 100% certain to vote

That figure is still depressing.

How do you get people to vote?

thecatfromjapan · 07/12/2019 18:03

Ultimate Definitely go with the NHS. There's an NHS Cuts app thing if you google that shows you what funding your area will/will not get.

And there are plenty of doctors and nurses pleading all over the internet for people to keep Johnson out of power.

Point out that, unless he votes tactically, his blood pressure will not cope with five years of Johnson screwing the country.

It's only LOLZ in TV when you can turn it off and forget about it.

As an ex-Labour voter & never-a-Tory, he will be driven mad by watching Johnson driving the UK over the cliff, fluffing his hair, & doing the winsome buffoon act while he does it.

So, he needs to save himself a lot of pain, put Brexit in the back-burner (worst that can happen is a second referendum in six months) & vote to keep Johnson out.

squid4 · 07/12/2019 18:07

^Just to balance the cat ratio here, and maybe to help take some minds off the increasing fizz, did anyone see the amazing documentary about a lone wolf in Canada ?

If Boris promised to reintroduce wolves to the UK, that's my vote bought^

Labour's manifesto includes 12 (i think?) rewilding national parks
I read an amazing book about a rewilding area in the southeast which after about a decade had the most amazing proliferation of wildlife, the author said when she left home now she was gobsmacked by the "silence" of the countryside compared to her home. Gave me proper chills. Totally achieveable. Also, there was something scientific to do with the soil which meant rewilding it made it a huge carbon capture area.

THIS IS ALL POSSIBLE.
