Westminsterenders: Talent or Colour

FishesaPlenty · 06/12/2019 16:49

RTB and BCF are presumably busy with more important things. I'm clearly not qualified to start a Westminsterenders thread - but somebody has to take control and collect the waifs and strays.

The party of no talent want to introduce no colour into our lives.

6 days to the election.

Johnson is still a liar.

Corbyn is still apparently loved by Labour members and hated by everyone else.

Swinson is still a charming PTA chair.

thecat But this could backfire if we end up in hung parliament territory with the tories having more seats than Labour. The Lib Dem's could then work with the Tories to form a government.

TiddleTaddleTat · 07/12/2019 13:02

Peregrina Yes I am definitely voting Labour. I'm just questioning the logic of the tactical voting advice for my particular seat.

Peregrina · 07/12/2019 13:04

The Lib Dem's could then work with the Tories to form a government.

Since their own policy is to Revoke, for which they are getting criticism in some quarters, I cannot see them forming a Government which wants a hard Brexit.

They are getting some criticism, but we are also getting some Labour people saying that they will vote LibDem because of their revoke policy.

thecatfromjapan · 07/12/2019 13:06

Oh, I missed the Lib/Lab thing.
Why is that even there?

Most sites say vote for who you want in that situation.

(Worryingly, they say that for (formerly) safe Labour seats too.)

TiddleTaddleTat · 07/12/2019 13:12

And if the support of the Lib Dems was conditional on a second referendum...

Alsohuman · 07/12/2019 13:15

I can’t see the LibDems going anywhere near supporting the Tories. The fact that they’ve run out of friends is one of the Tories’ biggest weaknesses.

Dusty01 · 07/12/2019 13:20

The Lib Dem’s would form some sort of coalition with the Tories. Jo Swinson and others in her party have said this. She has made it clear that she would not do the same with Labour.

Dusty01 · 07/12/2019 13:22

This was revealed in a Newsnight interview a couple of weeks ago. It was the Thursday that the LD manifesto came out. Part of that interview is on the Newsnight twitter page, but you need to see the full interview to get all of what she is saying.

Alsohuman · 07/12/2019 13:23

Jo Swinson may well not even be in Parliament this time next week, she seems to become more of an irrelevance every day. Can anyone see Johnson agreeing to another referendum? Because that would be the LibDems’ terms.

TiddleTaddleTat · 07/12/2019 13:24

I can see Johnson doing whatever he possibly can to keep Brexit as an option

Dusty01 · 07/12/2019 13:26

He is likely to lie and manipulate them. I’m not sure that Swinson or the LDs are clever or strong enough to resist whatever he chooses to bribe them with.

DGRossetti · 07/12/2019 13:27

The Lib Dem's could then work with the Tories to form a government.

Of all the combinations, that's the most "dynamic" Grin.

What I would really, really like, is for no two parties combined to be able to command a majority. Not quite sure what that would look like or need in terms of seats, but it would certainly be an eventful time.

Imagine if Tories+LibDems was exactly equal to Labour+SNP+Others (I'm discounting any chance of BXP winning a seat). Oh what fun.

TiddleTaddleTat · 07/12/2019 13:28

For politics nerds like us it certainly would be fascinating !
Many others find it frustrating.

TiddleTaddleTat · 07/12/2019 13:29

Sorry didn't mean for that to sound sarcastic ... I genuinely do find it fascinating

Peregrina · 07/12/2019 13:41

Jo Swinson said that she wouldn't co-operate with either Johnson or Corbyn, but that was a few weeks ago. I think the policy is now, get Johnson out, so I don't think they will co-operate with the current Tories.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 07/12/2019 13:48

I think the policy is now, get Johnson out, so I don't think they will co-operate with the current Tories.

Ive seen no evidence of that Peregrina

Peregrina · 07/12/2019 13:51

Well, I am a LibDem activist and that is what I believe to be true. Locally we are trying to get the Remain Tories on board - the ones who have been abandoned by their party.

Peregrina · 07/12/2019 13:56

I should perhaps say, that is my opinion.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 07/12/2019 13:57

I believe to be true.

Belief is not what I need sorry Peregrina, Swinson keeps saying if she doesnt get a majority, she wants to secure a peoples vote, theres already a party offering that yet she wont countenance working with Labour under Corbyn, previous leaders said the same about Brown and Milliband. Its unlikely that Labour would go against the wishes of its membership and allow the 4th largest party in the HOC to dictate who their leader is. Obviously I'm not saying I'm right but you can understand the worry and confusion that she is creating in Labour members and I'm sure to some LD members

Peregrina · 07/12/2019 14:03

We will have to disagree JustAnother - I know you are a strong Corbyn supporter. I am in an area where Labour is nowhere.

But I have not forgotten that in the last election apparently 80% of people voted for parties which supported Brexit. If Corbyn had got off the fence three years earlier, it would have been a different matter.

dreichXmas · 07/12/2019 14:04

I was a Lib Dem member before moving abroad. (I even stood in council elections when asked)
I listened carefully to what the Libs are saying and all I can hear is that they will work on individual policies with whoever is in power.
I honestly cannot think of a more sensible policy for a small third party to have.

ListeningQuietly · 07/12/2019 14:04

Please watch this video and vote as he suggests

(and for amusement watch the two guys in the background)

Peregrina · 07/12/2019 14:06

And I must say JustAnother that in your case, instead of slagging off Jo Swinson, your efforts should be going towards those Labour members that the Tories are now trying to target - those in Wales and the Midlands - particularly now that the Brexit party has collapsed. Keep them on board in your area, and we might all be breathing a sigh of relief come next Friday.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 07/12/2019 14:11

Wasnt slagging her off, just a worry I thought Id share didnt mean to put you on the defensive Peregrina

But I have not forgotten that in the last election apparently 80% of people voted for parties which supported Brexit. If Corbyn had got off the fence three years earlier, it would have been a different matter.

Yes it was a shame that so many people accepted the Tory narrative on that, nope it was the right position then and still is now, its about the many not the few whether thats Brexiters or Remainers

mrslaughan · 07/12/2019 14:11

@catfromjapan
One of the reasons I was against the election it's the rules on social media haven't been tightened- I think the micro-targeting in labour seats is a huge problem - just the steady steady drop of poison. While the tories are in power the rules will never be tightened.

With regards to Starmer and Corbyn - Starmer is very good communicator/orator - he gets his message across.
In lots of way Corbyn is too moral - he wants to be honest and he doesn't really do spin - or attack his opponent. In some situations I really respect that. But with Bullies sometimes you have to stand up to them......

I think a huge problem in this election is that labour and Lib Dem's have attacked each other . I just despair about that. They are essentially wanting to head in the same direction.

Anyway 5-6 days to hope....
