Welcome to the Brexit Arms!

We are temporarily under new management but worry not, the ship is still steady as we sail on to 12 December. A quick recap of the events of the last week or two:

📋❓💙❤️💛⁉️💙‼️🤷🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️😀☹️😀☹️😧😱🙄😬🤥🤔😂🤣😂🔥💨⛈🌥🌦🌤☀️

Anyone of any political persuasion who is prepared to join in, eschew goadery, and enjoy a laugh, welcome. First drinks are on the house.

Morning, All!

It's brass monkeys out there but, as ever, there's a warm welcome in the Brexit Arms with a roaring fire in the snug and the heat gently radiating through to the bar. I've thrown another log on the fire.

The breakfast welcome tray is back on track thanks to our doughty supplier, and there's plenty of tea and coffee for everyone, as well as a huge jug of hot chocolate to ward off the winter blues.

The best bit? It's Sunday. And you know what that means? No post. Yes, today is a spam-free day (this will cheer up Walking). Enjoy it while it lasts. Tomorrow is another day.

Still missing the point, Bellini. Priti Patel is not the brightest. Neither is her shadow, Diane Abbott. The point - which I thought was crystal clear - was that Priti Patel has to fight bigotry all the time (being dismissed as a coconut - a derogatory term, I might point out, that is only applied to people of colour and therefore undeniably racist). As does Diane Abbott; a point made by Dusty. I fully expected you to acknowledge what Autumn was saying about the sheer racism employed as a criticism of the Home Secretary as a means of shutting her down - something that she and Belle suffer in their everyday lives. That's why Autumn said Priti was brave. If you had acknowledged the racism, but separated it clearly from your criticism of things Priti has said or done, that would have been just fine here in the Arms. Instead, you conflated the two. And for what it's worth, Bellini, I really don't think that's how you intended it to come across. But it did. Hence the disappointment.

I look forward to robust defence of Diane Abbott on here as a person rather than the hopeless politician that she is.
And yes, I think you did misunderstand me.
I'll stick to sneaking in an nicking snacks and drinks.

SingingLily · 01/12/2019 08:48

Autumn's post of 22.08 yesterday.
Dusty's post of 22.11 yesterday.

And I look forward to the day that you actually bother to read posts 🤷🏻‍♀️

bellinisurge · 01/12/2019 08:55

Nope. Someone being funny doesn't mean they are suitable for Home Secretary. It is despicable that people use the term coconut - never heard a Remainer using that term or similar.
Patel and Abbott are third rate. Hard to get past that.

DustyDiamond · 01/12/2019 09:00

- never heard a Remainer using that term or similar.

The #FBPE remain extremist nut jobs on twitter constantly throw that term at leave/Tory supporting ethnic minority people from all walks of life - particularly at MPs

SingingLily · 01/12/2019 09:01

But Labour supporters - supposedly the very model of diversity, acceptance and achingly liberal tolerance - feel free to use that term. Sajid Javid gets the same hurled at him.

Hard to get past that.

“Nope. Someone being funny doesn't mean they are suitable for Home Secretary.”

What does this even mean? And what does it have to do with the conversation? Confused

Dusty is right. You should read the posts.

bellinisurge · 01/12/2019 09:03

In fact, apart from Gove who I have a grudging respect for intellectually, it's hard to see anyone in the Cabinet (or frankly, Shadow Cabinet) that is any good. Including PM and leader of the Opposition.
It's a case of the "decent" ones stepping back rather than the good ones stepping forward. Which says a lot about the "decent" ones, sadly.

bellinisurge · 01/12/2019 09:04

@EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit , I was directed to a post where the poster had said Abbott was funny.

dirtyrottenscoundrel · 01/12/2019 09:06

Left wingers are happy to call white men ‘gammons’ as an insult and fall about laughing.

DustyDiamond · 01/12/2019 09:06

You were also directed to this one:

Whilst Diane Abbott isn't relevant to the convo (as she's of the left, she's not typically party to the 'coconut' jibe) i am nonetheless happy to share my views on her

I like her, and admire what she's achieved.
I think she’s been promoted well above her abilities & is shockingly bad as a front bencher but I have a hell of a lot of respect for what she’s achieved as a black woman from her era - she was a proper trailblazer & she's been (and is) a fantastic & prominent inspiration for young black girls across the country I'm sure
Just like for me growing up only ever knowing a female pm was a massive albeit subconscious positive impact

bellinisurge · 01/12/2019 09:07

As I'm not a left winger, I'm not sure what you are saying.

SingingLily · 01/12/2019 09:07

I think The Saj is doing a fine job as Chancellor. I also think he's a decent man with decent instincts and a steady and balanced approach to the job.

I quite like Rishi Sunak as well. I watched him being "interviewed" by Kate Burley. She kept asking him the same flipping question, saying she didn't understand his answer. He kept explaining it to no avail. Till the camera caught her scrolling down her phone instead of listening to the flaming answer. The man's a walking saint.

What we're doing is reading your posts and responding to the points you raise

Your own particular political leanings are irrelevant to me 🤷🏻‍♀️

SingingLily · 01/12/2019 09:13

And the reason why you were directed to that post as well is because the point was made that in real life, Diane Abbott is a likeable woman with a screamingly funny sense of humour. A real person, then.

You were looking for a "robust defence" of DA as a person. It's there, in that post.

Well, it's all gone quiet in here. Drinks all round, then. Meanwhile...

From The Sunday Telegraph today:^

"Jeremy Corbyn's most ardent supporters are more likely to be anti-Semitic than those of other party leaders, according to the first analysis of its kind.

A YouGov poll found that more than one in three (35 per cent) of those who "strongly like" the Labour leader agreed with four or more statements deemed to be anti-Semitic, while 58 per cent held two more more such views.

The proportion of ardent supporters of Nigel Farage, Boris Johnson and Jo Swinson who agreed with four or more of the statements was significantly less, at 24 per cent, 21 per cent and 18 per cent respectively."^

Is anyone surprised by that? Labour supporters significantly more anti-Semitic than the Brexit Party? The Conservative Party? And twice more likely than the LibDems?

I keep thinking of something I read earlier in the week. A man who pointed out that historically, "Jews are always the first to be singled out. But not the last. Never the last".

I also think once you've crossed the bridge towards intolerance towards one small part of the community, 'tis but a small step to extend that to others.

Dusty you could have had Rod, Paolo, Humza and you went for Blackford? Shock Was in desperate need of eye bleach so I had to do some googling.

Then I googled Michael Gove in a kilt - oops.

DD2 is making waffles again. This is her ideal man.

I agree with this.

Definitely

100%.

AutumnRose1 · 01/12/2019 10:09

@bellinisurge. You asked me “ trust your admiration for Priti Patel based purely on her ethnicity is shared with an admiration for Diane Abbott.”

I answered saying yes, then in the hope of lightening the mood, told what I thought was a funny anecdote. I don’t know, maybe everyone expects their local MP to cheer them up that much 🤷🏻‍♀️

Gammon gives me the rage. Now I think about it, it’s probably why we’ve seen coconut return.

AutumnRose1 · 01/12/2019 10:12

Thanks to all the posters who understood and reiterated my posts

As for telling @Bellinisurge to read them again, there’s no point, she wants a fight. There must be a more argumentative thread for that, surely.
