Westminstenders: Register to Vote

The closing date for registration is this Tuesday

The weekend has seen the leaders question time debates.

Johnson failed to answer a question and the BBC edited later edited footage to change laughter at him to applause.

Swinson continues to prove that the Lib Dem campaign planners don't understand the electorate. They based the campaign around her and the more the public see her and the more she opens her gob she proves she's the witless headgirl who really knows fuck all.

Corbyn has now adopted a neutral 2nd referendum position. Far too late.

Jo Johnson apparently said that a good election manifesto is one people aren’t talking about 48 hrs later, and it seems that the Conservatives really have gone for that strategy.

Johnson had promised a manifesto for change yet of the three main parties it seems far from that. It avoids controversy for the most part, but also doesn't offer solutions to some of our biggest problems like social care. But with the Tories so ahead in the polls, the status quo and making sure they don't have a repeat of the 'dementia tax' car crash seems to be the order of the day. Because Brexit is going to going to provide a magic solution instead...

Meanwhile the Labour Party have gone completely the other way and really have gone for it and come up with ideas. With a mixed response from the public and press.

And I still can't tell you what is in the LD one, cos Prince Andrew...

This week should see the election come into focus as postal voting starts. As it stands its hard to bet on anything but a Tory majority.

Random18 - I've met Nicola many times over the last 20 years (I'm in her constituency), on both work, personal and school (I was on the Parent Council at both primary and secondary school) business as well as out campaigning (during the Indyref campaign) and I've always found her genuine and personable. Smile

Alex Salmond on the other hand.... Hmm (met him a couple of times at formal functions).

Dh through his work has had occasion to meet many politicians (usually when they were taking credit for the work he'd done) says that Dewar was good, as was (surprisingly) Rifkind. Blair was dreadful - couldn't be bothered getting the details of the projects correct and wasn't interested in giving due credit to those that had done the work Hmm He found Salmond a bit arrogant which tied in with my experience - but has always found Nicola helpful, constructive and straight talking.

Depriving your erstwhile fellow citizens (not to mention all your lovely European neighbours) of their 24/7/365 deterrence protection and their in extremis means of defence seems a remarkably uncompromising position to me.

That's predicated upon the assumption that Trident is the UKs to do with what it likes. After the Harry Dunn case, I wonder how many more secret treaties there are which actually prevent us pressing the red button without US blessing.

That's before you consider the absolute horseshit we were sold for years about the power the Queen supposedly had, which - when it was put to the test - was never there to start with.

And (I mean maximum disrespect here) no disrespect LouiseCollins28 but I find your sudden concern for your European neighbours security slightly at odds with your oft-stated scepticism of the whole European project. That's before you consider that it's entirely possible that not every European country necessarily wanted the UK as their big brother to start with.

Also

Election maps UK @electionmapsuk
Welsh Westminster Voting Intention:

LAB: 38% (+9)
CON: 32% (+4)
PLC: 11% (-1)
LDM: 9% (-3)
BXP: 8% (-7)
GRN: 1% (-2)

Via @YouGov, 22-25 Nov.
Changes w/ 31 Oct-4 Nov.

The last GE Labour got 48.9%, Cons 33.6% and Plaid 10.4%. That was Labour's best performance since 1997.

2015 looked like this: Lab 36.9%, Con 27.2%, Plaid 12.1% and LD 6.5%

The Tories badly need to do better in Wales in this GE than last. Yet they haven't broken through on percentage from 2017.

How this splits to constituency level is important but the Labour Party look to be holding up to 2015 levels of support. It depends on the implications of the tactical pact between Plaid and the LDs and how that might affect things.

The Conservatives will want to be higher than this though.

I am guessing most of us are in the 35 - 45 age bracket?

And I think this age bracket mostly voted to remain?

bellinisurge · 26/11/2019 17:02

I'm not in that age range. I'm older but technically not a boomer.

prettybird · 26/11/2019 17:03

I'm in the 55-64 bracket Blush

Piggywaspushed · 26/11/2019 17:03

Ah, OK, bellini : I probably won't report now as it's the old thread but I will do in future.

dreichwinter · 26/11/2019 17:05

Icantreachthepretzels · 26/11/2019 17:10

*I am guessing most of us are in the 35 - 45 age bracket?

I wish*

I’m really glad I’m not. I absolutely dread to think what state we’ll be in 20 years down the line. Hopefully I’ll be permanently oblivious before then.

thecatfromjapan · 26/11/2019 17:14

I am guessing most of us are in the 35 - 45 age bracket?

Stinkyeddie · 26/11/2019 17:40

Slightly north of that here too :)

ContinuityError · 26/11/2019 17:47

@Piggywaspushed

That second Tory voter thread seems to have been taken over by the Brexit Arms gang (which possibly explains the level of "debate").
