Westminstenders: Register to Vote

The closing date for registration is this Tuesday

The weekend has seen the leaders question time debates.

Johnson failed to answer a question and the BBC edited later edited footage to change laughter at him to applause.

Swinson continues to prove that the Lib Dem campaign planners don't understand the electorate. They based the campaign around her and the more the public see her and the more she opens her gob she proves she's the witless headgirl who really knows fuck all.

Corbyn has now adopted a neutral 2nd referendum position. Far too late.

Jo Johnson apparently said that a good election manifesto is one people aren’t talking about 48 hrs later, and it seems that the Conservatives really have gone for that strategy.

Johnson had promised a manifesto for change yet of the three main parties it seems far from that. It avoids controversy for the most part, but also doesn't offer solutions to some of our biggest problems like social care. But with the Tories so ahead in the polls, the status quo and making sure they don't have a repeat of the 'dementia tax' car crash seems to be the order of the day. Because Brexit is going to going to provide a magic solution instead...

Meanwhile the Labour Party have gone completely the other way and really have gone for it and come up with ideas. With a mixed response from the public and press.

And I still can't tell you what is in the LD one, cos Prince Andrew...

This week should see the election come into focus as postal voting starts. As it stands its hard to bet on anything but a Tory majority.

Sorry, the Neanderthals weren't wiped out. They were assimilated. We are them.

Of course it's only by now beginning to understand the questionable moral evolution of the human genome (I doubt there was much consent 10,000BC ..) that we can start to tease out variations that can have a dramatic effect on human diseases and prevalences ...

Something is up

Electoral Reform Society @electoralreform
NEW: There have been a massive 2.8m applications to #RegisterToVote since the election was called.

That's over a million more than the comparable pre-deadline period during the last election, which saw 1.7m applications

The highest number of applications so far this election was on our National Voter Registration Day last Friday, which saw over 300,000 #RegisterToVote applications. Almost double any other day since the election was called

Registering to vote is not the same as turning out, but under 35s are not going to vote Conservative in any great numbers.

NEW: Two thirds (1.86m) of the 2.8m who've applied to #RegisterToVote so far this election campaign are under the age of 35

Well, if Labour really were to get 600 seats, that would explain why the Tories are desperate to win now. They can then change the voting system to make sure that no one under 25 can vote, thus ensuring their own survival for another 40 years or so!

ListeningQuietly · 26/11/2019 13:05

I will be interested to see how many of the registrations in the last few weeks are actually new voters
and how many are students adding their second address
and how many are people re registering just in case
and
HOW MANY WILL ACTUALLY VOTE

RedToothBrush · 26/11/2019 13:18

Yeah and there's also possibility of people in previously safe labour seats registering as they see a point in voting as an opportunity to boot Labour for the first time ever.

It depends where and when.

Do we ever get to see any sort of regional breakdown of new voter registrations, and how many are genuinely new?

Oakenbeach · 26/11/2019 13:28

True, but If the numbers are true, and 2.8m people have registered to vote compared to 1.7m in 2017, and that 1.8m of those are under 35, it surely follows that it is very likely that turnout amongst young people will be higher compared to 2017.... and that would mean the polls could well be significantly overstating the Tory vote.

TheMShip · 26/11/2019 13:31

If you're interested in the echo chamber phenomenon, this is intriguing research (based on climate change opinions): blogs.biomedcentral.com/on-society/2019/11/12/echo-chambers-and-polarization-may-not-be-the-same-phenomenon

Existence of echo chambers indicates a polarized state of the society concerning beliefs regarding a given topic. However, increase in the "intensity of echo chamber phenomenon” does not necessarily translate to an increase in the “intensity of polarization”.

Oakenbeach · 26/11/2019 13:32

Do we ever get to see any sort of regional breakdown of new voter registrations, and how many are genuinely new?

Even if we can’t know this, it’s surely not plausible that fewer of the 2.8m registrations in 2019 are new compared to the 1.7m in 2017.

Alsohuman · 26/11/2019 13:32

Once again, I wonder if they’re trying to throw it.

Not sure if this has been posted already, but it's the politics.co.uk Remain campaigning guide, focusing on a subset of marginal seats with clear divisions between candidates' views on Brexit. www.politics.co.uk/comment-analysis/2019/11/26/the-remainer-election-guide-where-to-campaign

DGRossetti · 26/11/2019 13:36

Of course, all the newly registered voters could rock up, and be denied a vote. After all, we now know there's zero comeback for anyone when that happens. A vote is worthless, apparently.

I don't know if you have seen tweets from Michael Gove and Matt Hancock today.

Shocking imo.

There may be others but i haven't spotted them.

The 2 main political parties have an issue with racism and no one party can take the moral high ground.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/11/2019 13:56

So an amusing model output from the GFS model for the day before election day.
