Westminstenders: Register to Vote

The closing date for registration is this Tuesday

The weekend has seen the leaders question time debates.

Johnson failed to answer a question and the BBC edited later edited footage to change laughter at him to applause.

Swinson continues to prove that the Lib Dem campaign planners don't understand the electorate. They based the campaign around her and the more the public see her and the more she opens her gob she proves she's the witless headgirl who really knows fuck all.

Corbyn has now adopted a neutral 2nd referendum position. Far too late.

Jo Johnson apparently said that a good election manifesto is one people aren’t talking about 48 hrs later, and it seems that the Conservatives really have gone for that strategy.

Johnson had promised a manifesto for change yet of the three main parties it seems far from that. It avoids controversy for the most part, but also doesn't offer solutions to some of our biggest problems like social care. But with the Tories so ahead in the polls, the status quo and making sure they don't have a repeat of the 'dementia tax' car crash seems to be the order of the day. Because Brexit is going to going to provide a magic solution instead...

Meanwhile the Labour Party have gone completely the other way and really have gone for it and come up with ideas. With a mixed response from the public and press.

And I still can't tell you what is in the LD one, cos Prince Andrew...

This week should see the election come into focus as postal voting starts. As it stands its hard to bet on anything but a Tory majority.

Wish the people on the 'anyone but Corbyn' Tory fan thread would read that account of the Johnson hospital visit.

thecatfromjapan · 25/11/2019 18:06

☹️
Tom Edwards is reporting yet another Labour activist has been assaulted.

That's 3 I know of, so far.

Honestly - people have been radicalised by the right-wing media.

I watched Gina Miller having to shelter out of lines of sight at the Supreme Court and it broke me.

These are ordinary people. Canvassing.

It has to stop.

'BREAKING: A @UKLabour activist has been attacked in Herefordshire while on the #GeneralElection2019 campaign trail. The victim, a woman in her 70s, was thrown onto a car bonnet in Bromyard and left with bruising and suspected broken ribs. More details right now on @bbchw.'

BaloneyInMySlacks · 25/11/2019 18:11

In Bromyard??

thecatfromjapan · 25/11/2019 18:11

Other two incidents were a Labour councillor punched in the face in Rugby whilst out leafleting

And a 72 year old Labour leafletter punched in Rotherham and left with a suspected broken jaw.

The last story was carried in The Independent but I can't link because my phone is being stupid.

Alsohuman · 25/11/2019 18:12

A 70 year old woman? I never, ever say this but they’re cunts.

thecatfromjapan · 25/11/2019 18:15

Gina Millar sighting was in London, when I went to see the verdict in the prorogue case.

Sorry if that wasn't clear.

It really upset me to see that there are genuine fears for her safety.

The attacking incidents (that have been reported so far) are of Labour leafletters/canvassers in Rugby & 2 other locations.

Honestly, people need to calm down. ☹️

Peregrina · 25/11/2019 18:15

Those of us who are party activists have been warned to not go out alone, tell people where you are going, party candidates should always be accompanied, step back from arguments, report to the police if necessary.

It should not be necessary to have to produce this advice - particularly the bits about calling the Police.

People going out are people promoting your democratic right to vote. You remember, democracy was something the Leavers valued highly or so they said. Forgive me, if I feel angry.

Stinkyeddie · 25/11/2019 18:16

Of course once these people realise the tory lies it will be too late.

And then this violence they have unleashed will be turned on them.

Thats the danger of unleashing the mob.

thecatfromjapan · 25/11/2019 18:16

It's bad, isn't it, alsohuman?

I'm just hoping we get through this GE without something truly horrific.

Peregrina · 25/11/2019 18:17

The only hostility I have personally had is one person giving a leaflet back and politely telling me we were wasting our money, and two other people coming out and officiously ripping the leaflets up and putting them in the bin. Others have been chased down garden paths.....

thecatfromjapan · 25/11/2019 18:18

Yes, Peregrina. Same here.

Worryingly, it will have been the same in those 3 cases, I should think.

Which means the perpetrators didn't care about witnesses, etc.

Not good.

thecatfromjapan · 25/11/2019 18:21

That last message to Peregrina was concurring with her experience of advice given.

Sadly, I have to say I have noticed (some) people are angrier and more abusive.

It is as though they believe we are legitimate targets for abuse.

I wonder who could have given them that idea?

yolofish · 25/11/2019 18:22

farmers, plumbers, nurses, office workers yolo Are you any of these workers? What do you do?

thecatfromjapan · 25/11/2019 18:24

Much love to Peregrina, OhYouBadKitten and all others who are just trying to do the spadework of democracy.

Keep going, people.

💐💐

yolofish · 25/11/2019 18:26

oops, sorry! derxa I'm not sure why it's relevant, but I am freelance - PR and translation. I'm from a family of (Irish) farmers, my DH is a tradesman. I am concerned about Ireland, and because DH company buys product for manufacture from the EU there will likely be increased importatation costs for his company (of which he is a director). He could buy a similar product from China, but we'd prefer that it comes from closer to home. No certainty here about #getBrexitdone.

mrslaughan · 25/11/2019 18:33

Corbyn's Brexit proposal is far better for business even if the rest of his manifesto isn't.

Agreed @Mistigirl

I thought twice about posting those stories here.

I'm aware it will put people off canvassing. ☹️

But I thought, on balance, people should know what's going on.

Honestly, it isn't usually like that.
You canvass in groups and are looked after. And the majority of people are polite.

But I think, at some point in the future, we need to talk about what radicalisation looks like in its widest sense. And need to develop some real defences against it.

FadingStar · 25/11/2019 18:38

On that other thread they're blaming Corbyn for the invasion of Iraq even though he was completely against it and voted against it.Confused And still NO good reasons to vote Tory have been put forward.

Stinkyeddie · 25/11/2019 18:44

I've had a very horrid day.

I'm helping someone who is fleeing domestic abuse.

The process of trying to get help, a bank account, UC application, housing applications...just soul destroying.

It's given me a real insight into why so many women put up with it or go back to their abuser.

It's just so fucking hard. And that's if the websites are working properly!

The gov.uk website has info on that isout of date.

Just...awful.

This is tory britain. This is why suicide seemed an easier way out for my family member.

Fuck the tories. And fuck anyone who votes for them, knowing this. Knowing the state the NHS is in.

They will never be able to say they weren't warned.

DGRossetti · 25/11/2019 18:45

Remember (channels A Fish Called Wanda) - you're not allowed to call them stupid.

Alsohuman · 25/11/2019 18:45

They’ve been at it all day @FadingStar. Deathgrip’s doing a sterling job but they’ve got their fingers in their ears.

mrslaughan · 25/11/2019 18:45

@listening
^
If Corbyn asks for a SM/CU Brexit Deal, the EU will deliver it in days
they have it oven ready^

Sorry if I tagged the wrong person - but I do agree to some extent with this statement. I know BCF disagrees, but I believe the EU would prefer for us to be more closely aligned - so would (with some grumbling) work towards achieving this......though I think they would be unhappy to be stuck with Nigel.

thecatfromjapan · 25/11/2019 18:49

StinkyEddie.

Negotiating UC, all on its own, is a nightmare, never mind accommodation, legal help and support.

Do you have a good local councillor? They can help. As can Food Banks - many will have volunteers from CAB or with some legal knowledge volunteering there.

I'm so sorry.

I have so much respect for you (I saw your thread). You are someone I would be so proud to know, and so grateful to have as a friend. ❤️
