Westministenders: Promises, promises

We should see the party manifestos soon
in 2017, that changed the election

So far, Tory and Labour have been competing for who can offer the most spending on the NHS

Labour have been giving tantalising glimpses of free dental care and free broadband

The Tories have been hinting at tax cuts, as well as public spending

The polls suggest the public like all of the above,
but also that Brexit is the most important issue

25 days to go, still all to play for

Jo Swinson answering 'yes' without hesitation to the question about pressing the nuclear button was grim. I've seen lots of Green Party supporters on Twitter furious about their pact with them.

mrslaughan · 20/11/2019 09:03

As much as their are many back benchers in labour that I hugely respect, I don't think they are listened to.... I think Seamus Milne holds far more sway. Yet again we have an unelected official with more power than an elected one - and that concerns me.

Very down this morning about the whole political situation in this country. The conservative parties dystopian moves of twitter last night - should be illegal..... but they keep on getting away with it.

MockersFactCheckMN · 20/11/2019 09:24

There is no "Button." It is a key in the safe of the submarine captain, and another for the first officer.

The sub will also carry a sealed letter from the PM with instructions. However you word it, this letter can only say one of three things: Nuke 'em, Don't Nuke 'em, or I dunno, you decide whether to Nuke 'em or not.

When asked, there are three answers a responsible PM could give: Yes, I would (now do you believe me?) Not telling, It's a National Security Secret, or Blowed if I know how I'd react if it was real.

ffauxlivia · 20/11/2019 09:26

The CCHQ Press account masquerading as a fact checking service was genuinely appalling.

I agree this was truly appalling, the idea of the governing political party masquerading as an independent fact checking organisation is really sinister. I believe that one of the reasons for doing this is to cause confusion and discredit the genuine fact checking sites that keep calling Johnson out on his daily lies.

Yes I agree too, and remember you can report it to the Electoral Commission: www.electoralcommission.org.uk/contact-us/contact-us-online I did so this morning.

According to the Independent this morning Dominic Raab said that 'no-one gives a toss' that the Conservatives did this Angry

MockersFactCheckMN · 20/11/2019 09:30

Electoral Commision are aware and will deliberate. It's not like OFCOM where the number of complainants gives a compaint weight. It is a matter of the law, and the figlead CCHQ in very small writing would not appear in any retweet, so it's open and shut.

Sadly he is right though.

Newspeak is coming to pass. Limited diminishing vocabulary- short sound bites. Complex, complete thoughts reduced to overly meaningless simplistic meaning.

A faux fact checking website would have been used by Orwell if he thought of it- all part of the goal to make unorthodox political thought impossible.

" By 2050 — earlier, probably — all real knowledge of Oldspeak will have disappeared. The whole literature of the past will have been destroyed."

I don’t think he is right. I think it will be seen as yet another example of Tory dishonesty and contempt for the truth. Why on earth are they letting Raab and Cleverly do media interviews? If I were Tory campaign director I’d shut them in a cupboard until the polls close.

Peregrina · 20/11/2019 10:03

No I don't think Raab is right either. It's made both the BBC and Guardian on line news.

DGRossetti · 20/11/2019 10:03

Why on earth are they letting Raab and Cleverly do media interviews?

Who else is there ?

Saw this on FB, really not surprised:

This is definitely true. I was working in the US in the year that Trump got elected and witnessed the rapid descent into this world. You would try and talk to a Trump supporter about an article in the Washington Post fact checking 100 of Trump's lies in his first 10 days, and all they would say is 'fake news', 'biased liberal elite media' etc and refuse to even acknowledge the article. You just can't have a reasoned debate with someone who refuses to deal with facts and it was infuriating.

I hoped the UK might be a notch above this but since Brexit it's been exactly the same here

Alsohuman · 20/11/2019 10:19

Did anyone keep count of how many times Johnson said “Get Brexit done” last night?

ChilliMum · 20/11/2019 10:25

While the cchq account masquerading as a fact checking account is absolutely appalling it has spawned some fantastic responses.

Ralf Little is cuurently doing a marvelous job of masquerading as a very humorous conservative press orifice Grin. Well worth a look if you have time.

Alsohuman · 20/11/2019 10:38

Twitter’s showing its true colours, Ralf Little’s account is suspended. Dystopian indeed.

Twitter’s showing its true colours

Interesting how dumb these companies become when the tech moved out and the money moved in. If they're quite happy to allow the value of content they carry to decrease in value, then they themselves will decrease in value.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/11/2019 10:59

There's fury on our local FB pages about FactCheck. This is in an area that is dye in the wool true blue.

AutumnCrow · 20/11/2019 11:05

I think a lot of Tories in the Johnny Mercer mould are embarrassed by it all, by the spivness and the mendacity

Dusty01 · 20/11/2019 11:06

I haven't spoken to my dad about this - but he and my step mum are life long Tory supporters sadly. They will not be voting Tory this time for many reasons but I think one of the biggest, particularly for my step mum, is the dishonesty and immorality in the Tory party. The FactCheck will probably alienate them from the party further and I imagine will do the same for many many people like them.

So I don't think Raab is right either.

On another note the repetition of sound bites from all the Tories. They're just parroting the same thing over and over again - a bit like certain people who come on here. It just makes me switch off. I have to shout over them as it makes my head hurt listening to it. It really is a blatant form of brainwashing and I don't think it works as it's too painful and not at all subtle. I wonder if anyone at all listens to all that guff - and believes it, or even allows it to sink in ...

lonelyplanetmum · 20/11/2019 11:08

I think it will be seen as yet another example of Tory dishonesty and contempt for the truth.

Not enough see it like this. The critical weight of slightly interested voters dismiss blatant dishonesty as well " all politicians lie" . So they go for the entertaining - what - might be - in - it - for me one.

YouGov and MSM say last night's #ITVDebate was a draw.

So what are people talking about this morning?

Heavily redacted trade talks
Corbyn's response to Prince Andrew Q
A Christmas Carol/Scrooge
Jayne
Tory fake fact check Twitter account
Johnson's lies about NHS

Draw, my arse!

DGRossetti · 20/11/2019 11:16

Fans of Jung might ponder the news that a Wetherspoons had to be evacuated after a noxious gas was reported

Could something be stirring at the bottom of a deep Scottish loch ?

I think “Get Brexit Done” came up about 7 times (2 “dithers and delays”, 1 “one nation Conservative and 3 “oven ready deal”.

Not that I was counting Grin

DGRossetti · 20/11/2019 12:00

I really, really, really wanted to raise the level of debate here ...

Westministenders: Promises, promises
DGRossetti · 20/11/2019 12:01

But then I really, really, really couldn't be bothered Grin
