Westminstenders: The Non-Pact Pact

The Brexit Party and the Conservatives have agreed a trumpian pact to no deal. Led by the ERG.

They don't want you to know its a pact because the Conservatives still want One Nation Conservatives types to believe they are still One Nation Conservatives, simply because they say they are. They are not.

The Brexit Party won't stand any candidates in a Conservative held seat. But don't be surprised if there isn't more Non-Pact tactical stepping aside. This of course won't be a Pact. Cos the Brexit Party say its not. And the Conservative Party say its not.

The Liberal Democrats, Plaid and the Greens are in an electoral pact. They say they are in an electoral pact and have published a list.

Meanwhile the Labour Party isn't in a Pact. But there is still talk that in key seats that someone (either the LDs or Labour) should stand aside to try and deseat key Conservatives. This won't happen because the Lib Dems and Labour are not in a pact. And when they say they are not in a pact they aren't.

If after an election we have a hung parliament then either the Conservatives or Labour who are not in a pact and say they will never be in a pact, will try and woo someone to a kingmaker and be in government with them, probably on a supply and demand basis rather than coalition. They'll deny this but we kind of know how this goes...

Sounds similar to my situation yolo but in a different order. Grin

Congratulations @Peachi82

Welcome @Peachi82

Do we know how many wheels are left on the Tory bus? They seem to be falling off, it feels like they are having a disastrous campaign but I'm aware of my biased feelz so probably not even able to take an objective view on it, not to say any party is having an amazing campaign

tobee · 13/11/2019 16:57

Hoping someone leeks the Russia report at useful time.

dreichwinter · 13/11/2019 16:57

Congratulations @Peachi82

I don't think long standing Lib Dems are going to be of one mind particularly.

I know some who would vote Labour over Tory and others who would lean the other way.

Personally working in Doncaster put me off Labour and Unions for life but others would make different choices.

tobee · 13/11/2019 16:59

Feels like they are having a disastrous campaign to me too Just. Despite various media organs giving them a helping hand. Hmm

But I'm notoriously shit at reading the runes so ....

Leaks not leeks

I’m no fan of Swinson, but I do think that this moral outrage about Canterbury is a bit odd. It was amazing that Rosie Duffield won in 2017. A libdem candidate in the race may actually consolidate Rosie’s position, if remain leaning Conservatives vote Libdem.
I am more concerned about the situation in North East Somerset, whereLibdems came a very poor third in 2017 but are claiming they have the best chance of taking out Mr Rees Mogg, using a very dodgy poll they commissioned. But it may just be that I am missing info about a Libdem surge in the local elections, which is, I understand, the situation in Chelmsford.
I would give anything for a more polite and measured discourse, here, and on the media and in Westminster. I did love what the former LD candidate for Canterbury had to say, but making way doesn’t always improve chances in marginal seats.
Despite everything, I think I am becoming more hopeful. The floods may have given some voters a reason to reconsider the leaving the EU rhetoric. Climate change, infrastructure and the over funding of the south may have moved up the agenda. Which is not celebrating the floods, I am in an affected county, and I know it’s awful.

Remain United urge that voters vote Labour in Canterbury.

Peregrina · 13/11/2019 17:15

I think people tend to know who are the strong parties in their own areas, unless there have been boundary changes.

I personally don't like this cult of the Leader - we don't have a Presidential system, for one thing and for another, party leaders average about 5 years. So in five years time, Corbyn and Swinson will probably be gone. I hope Johnson is gone at the count on the morning of 13th December......

tobee · 13/11/2019 17:16

Ugh! Every time I take a sneaky peek at the bbc/sky news apps there's Johnson's stupid face gurning away.

placemats · 13/11/2019 17:19

The LibDems cannot win in Canterbury. If they really want to have remain to be the largest cohort in Parliament, then they will stand down in this constituency.

dreichwinter · 13/11/2019 17:20

I wasn't meaning to be arsey @tobee.
I think being a centrist party just means that the split is harder to call than other parties.
I also think it varies between different areas in the country but I don't have evidence to back that up.

Peregrina · 13/11/2019 17:20

Presumably Johnson is talking about the numbers which May had, so that he could manage without the DUP. He can't possible be talking about the numbers he had when Parliament was dissolved for the election.

tobee · 13/11/2019 17:21

I didn't take it as arsey dreich Grin

yolofish · 13/11/2019 17:21

I don't think the Tories actually want to win this election. I think they want to dump their shit on the next incumbents and sneer from the sidelines about how they would have done it better if only The People had seen sense.

placemats · 13/11/2019 17:24

Perhaps the electorate already know this yolo and are determined that the Tories sweat it out in a be careful what you wish for scenario.

Alsohuman · 13/11/2019 17:24

I think you may well be right @yolofish. They’ve got off to the worst possible start. Surely no party is this accident prone?
