There are signs that traditional party alignment might well have broken.

The Tories have split, labour are pretending they have not.

The pattern so far seems to be closely following the EU. This favours a Tory majority.

A long way to go.

If either Boris or Nigel want to win the North (of England) they need to be ordering a pair of waders and getting up there.
It wouldn't do any harm for Corbyn to do the same.
Last time I seem to remember that Prince Charles arrived before anyone else.
It's almost like the know intellectually 'the North' exists but they don't actually believe they could physically reach it.
( Unless I suppose Johnson's last visit to Donny put them all off for life)

Clavinova · 09/11/2019 20:22

Clearly you do not appreciate the issues around childcare in this country

My point was more to do with the comment on 'emotional blackmail' - as in, "Do you want to live in a fair society or not?" That, together with the current theme of politicians 'lying'.

thecatfromjapan · 09/11/2019 20:23

Misti It is brutal - & I suspect articulates a lot of what many on this thread feel/have felt.

Squid Blimey. As if you didn't have enough on your plate. 💐

Emilyontmoor · 09/11/2019 20:27

And I would be really happy to pay tax on my capital gains / children’s inheritance to address these issues. Especially to enable women to get back into the workforce as I did because I could afford for the majority of my senior management salary to go on childcare. And to make sure that everyone gets the same access to proper dementia care if they are affected as my dear FIL who was lucky enough to have a house to sell to pay for it, instead of clogging up NHS orthopaedic wards because as a result of not getting that care they are injuring themselves.

I have watched 6 figures disappear off our pension fund In recent months thanks to Brexit. I really fucking wish it had gone in something worthwhile, instead of down the toilet of the financial markets. I know I am lucky but I was always taught at my Muriel Spark type Girls’ Grammar School that with the privilege comes responsibility. And it should.

Clavinova · 09/11/2019 20:38

Fine, but the point is Christine Jardine was lying about how it would be paid for - she tried to cover it up with emotional blackmail.

I know I am lucky but I was always taught at my Muriel Spark type Girls’ Grammar School that with the privilege comes responsibility.

Yes, I went to a girl's grammar school as well - it still exists as a grammar school today.

To be fair, dreich, Corbyn is in Yorkshire, and calling for the floods to be called a national emergency.

Clavinova · 09/11/2019 20:41

oops - girls'

dreichwinter · 09/11/2019 20:47

@thecatfromjapan fair enough, I've seen that on Twitter now.
It's sensible of him.

squid4 · 09/11/2019 20:48

Corbyn is up here where the floods have been

squid4 · 09/11/2019 20:49

thanks cat, we were lucky though and no damage done (it was all very dramatic)

Icantreachthepretzels · 09/11/2019 21:03

He's been all over the north today. I drove past the labour 'battle bus' earlier. He'd been in Morley because they are targeting Andrea Jenkyns seat and then I assume he was near my house because of Stuart Andrew Envy

thecatfromjapan · 09/11/2019 21:18

Naming no-one, or any Party in particular, in particular but ... my goodness, some of the prospective Party candidates are well and truly dire.

2020 is going to be ... 🤦‍♀️

Peregrina · 09/11/2019 21:29

Well one of the problems is that so many MPs are standing down, at what appear to be last minute decisions, e.g people like Ed Vaizey, leaving the parties having to pull nonentities in off the street and bang a blue rosette on them. They might just as well go to a pig farm and conscript the occupants straight off - job done.

AuldAlliance · 09/11/2019 21:31

TatianaLarina
Well - you’re not in the best company.

I pointed out that saying the reason why journalists at Libération (which has been one of the most outspoken of French media as regards anti-semitism, racism and prejudice in France and includes people like Sorj Chalandon and Jean Hatzfeld) resigned was that French people are racist was offensive.

To be implicitly accused in return of being racist myself is deeply insulting.

There is deeply entrenched racism in France, on all levels.
I witness it regularly.

I wasn't saying there is no racism in France, merely that your explanation of that particular incident as being motivated purely by racism is inaccurate.

Dusty01 · 09/11/2019 21:31

Sorry Mistigirl. I’ve been busy with the family all day and sneakily looking at this thread when the chance arises. I don’t think you said anything of that sort. Either it was someone else or I did read a snippet of what you wrote and misunderstood.

I also admire Tories who have stood up to their leaders/Boris.

I wonder what is happening at the moment with Cummings.

Someone said they can’t believe the polls (sorry, writing on my phone and can’t look back easily), as no one they know admits they’d vote Tory.

Although we live in a very Labour area and nearly everyone I know voted Labour, some family members vote Tory and they won’t be this time. My very Conservative step mum is appalled by the behaviour of Boris. She reads the Telegraph and is blind to everything else normally. But none of this circus of horrors has escaped her.

thecatfromjapan · 09/11/2019 21:35

Labour (or a faction of Labour ...) is giving them a run for their money.

Some of the candidates are grim a.f. (to be blunt).

I thought I was inured to it all ... and I'm finding I'm shocked. ☹️

thecatfromjapan · 09/11/2019 21:36

Sorry, that was @Peregrina.

Alsohuman · 09/11/2019 21:43

It is pretty shocking, the quality on both sides is appalling. It seems nobody with integrity would go into politics now. And, seeing how our female MPs are treated, who can blame them? I wouldn’t do t.

Peregrina · 09/11/2019 21:45

Of course the Labour nonentities won't need a blue rosette - not sure what colour they would need.......

derxa · 09/11/2019 22:00

He's been all over the north today. Well he's certainly not at the Albert Hall. Boris is there with Carrie. Emily Thornberry is there clapping away like a trooper. I love Emily- she worth 100 Jeremys

Tanith · 09/11/2019 22:04

I'm glad to see them slinging a few out on their ears.

Poor candidates are a symptom of the poisonous atmosphere that has been allowed to develop. Who wants to become an MP when they know the abuse and death threats they'll receive just for doing their jobs?

If we want decent politicians, we need to seriously deal with the trolls who are attacking them.

TatianaLarina · 09/11/2019 22:20

I pointed out that saying the reason why journalists at Libération (which has been one of the most outspoken of French media as regards anti-semitism, racism and prejudice in France and includes people like Sorj Chalandon and Jean Hatzfeld) resigned was that French people are racist was offensive.

So is the Labour Party in fact - because a complexity of motives and perspectives can exist in an apparently progressive environment.

What you actually said was - not that you found it an offensive comment wrt Liberation staff specifically - but that you found it ”an offensive and insulting generalisation about the French” ie in general. If that’s not what you meant that’s fine.

I didn’t say ‘purely’ from racism - there were a number of reasons. Imo anti-Rothschild sentiment may be one but I’m not asking you to agree with me.

I don’t know you from Adam, there’s no point getting offended because someone on the internet can’t read your mind and motivation.

Dapplegrey · 09/11/2019 22:24

That is true. Tanith what do you think about attacks on chat forums such as mumsnet. There are loads of vile comments about politicians of all colours on here. Do you think that’s acceptable?

Mistigri · 09/11/2019 22:25

There's an ar

Mistigri · 09/11/2019 22:26

Sorry, fat fingers. There's a nice article in the guardian about Grieve's campaign and him campaigning alongside LD and LAB supporters. He has an uphill battle, I hope he wins.
