Apparently the usual landlady over ordered on Bar nuts on the last thread. Just step over them if you find them here, as we haven’t had a chance to clear them up yet.

Welcome to all friendly parties!

A glass of [red wine] please!

I had a rose tinted view of life outside the EU, sadly dashed to smithereens, in which we/UK contributed fully to Euratom, security protocols, the Erasmus programme, medical research across the 27 countries. Happy to dob in the £££ for pensions and institutions. I have no issue with economic immigration (though I note M Macron has exercised his option to limit EU migration into France as of yesterday) and I know as an ageing population we need people to take on those jobs, even if their objective is to stash the cash and return home. My DH spent five years in the ME to save the money to start his business, so it would be pulling up the ladder to deny others the same opportunity. But I also think we should be looking towards the old Commonwealth and further outside. We're never going to grow bananas here, so it makes sense to import them from countries we have historic ties to. We are richer and enriched by our contacts with the EU, but it doesn't have to make us happy to take instructions from nameless faceless jobsworths (here and elsewhere) unless they are ready to make/enter a full union of rule, law and tax harmony. So a debt incurred by Greece is met by Germany. The reality at the moment is that Greece and Italy are spending money they don't have to fund benefits like retiring at 55-60 that are not available across the whole EU/in the UK. Sez a slightly embittered 1950s born woman.

Wouldn't all the marrows be destined for the jam factory, Sunny? Smile

Epicwaffle · 06/11/2019 20:18

So, this has an american focus... but! I think the jist is there!

AMRAFP if people want others to understand their viewpoints they are usually happy to explain. Anyone would think the posters on this thread can't explain and that is why they refuse to do so. I'm a remainer but have tried on numerous occasions to understand the leaver viewpoint. I've never had an answer or read any thread where any leaver has given any rationale beyond "reasons." This makes their viewpoint very difficult to comprehend as it is not based on anything factual. It's just biased beliefs rather than critical analysis.

SunnyupLands · 06/11/2019 20:22

Marrow jam. Yum.

Marrow everything probably. Marrows aren't the hearty veg of the poor.
Our marrows would be so large the world would be thrown in shadow whilst we deliver huge marrows stamped with the same JC on them. JC would be hailed whilst feeding the world with his marrow and blocking out the sun thus solving climate issues.

All hail corbyns marrow. Hail, hail, hail, JC.

BercowsPoliticalPumpkin · 06/11/2019 20:23

XingMing they don't grow bananas in the EU so I'm not sure that helps your argument there.

ArseDarkly · 06/11/2019 20:23

Have to ironically laugh at the Red Corbyn stuff promoted on this thread.

Meanwhile, the person (be)leavers are giving their vote to is a big pal of dodgy Russian industrialist and Tory donor, Alexander Temerko and has deliberately suppressed a Commons Report on Russian interference in UK politics, with particular reference to the 2016 Referendum.

Marrows ARE the hearty veg of the poor!!

Every public space would be given over to growing them. Everywhere.

XingMing · 06/11/2019 20:24

@BercowsPumpkin, I think I just did.

SunnyupLands · 06/11/2019 20:26

Oh the sunny up lands, toiling to grow JCs marrow, whilst listening to diannes dulcet tones encouraging us on.

DustyDiamond · 06/11/2019 20:26

I hate that speechy thing!!!

I've been trying & I can't replicate it (thank fuck!)

I will take on sabotage duty wrt JC's Global Marrows.

✊🌹

SingingLily · 06/11/2019 20:26

Sunny, you've been at the gin again but you are making me laugh. Surely it's marrows for the 99% and courgettes for the elite? Grin

Xingming, you beat me to it!

XingMing · 06/11/2019 20:29

@bercow, I think I specified explicitly that we'd need to import bananas.

Epicwaffle · 06/11/2019 20:30

@SunnyupLands

Marrows are grim! 🤢

I had a, let’s call him ‘odd’ to be kind, neighbour, that barely spoke to me if I saw him, but at least once a year would spontaneously appear at my door with random fruit or veg that he had grown. One year it was an enormous marrow. No idea why, just him, at my door, with his silly overgrown veg for me, he never even explained what it was for! He just left! 😂 Bless him! Bonkers.

I hope I don’t get a repeat if Corbyn visits my area! Grin

Random anecdote, but the Marrow talk brought me right back! Grin

Singing... I'm drinking marrow rum
Wink

YES. Having done my own research... I've read you can make rum... From marrows.

AMRAFP · 06/11/2019 20:32

Most of XingMing's post set out reasons to remain in the EU. The reason to leave was stated at the end: our financial contribution to lower retirement age in 2 MS.

Is that the answer that had "already" been given? I must have missed it if so...

ArseDarkly · 06/11/2019 20:32

Excellent post at 20.17 XingMing

And as an ex-leaver I agree with your points about the EU - it needs massive reform and I can only hope that having a euro-sceptic like Corbyn in power would at least be a start on that.

Like you, I removed the rose-tinted specs long ago and realised there was nothing to be gained by leaving other than leaving the UK completely vulnerable and desperate and that the advantages you list are just part of a compelling case to remain.

DustyDiamond · 06/11/2019 20:32

XingMing · 06/11/2019 20:33

You could make rum from beets too. Anything with a high sugar content can produce rum.

SunnyupLands · 06/11/2019 20:34

Epic was your neighbour quite short and stout like a gorilla, wearing tight, slightly tarzan esq budgie smugglers, when he presented his marrow?

If he was... I may know him Blush

DustyDiamond · 06/11/2019 20:36

I'd be an awesome pirate

I could stash & smuggle Sunny's marrow rum across the land

Keep spirits up in the jam factories

Epicwaffle · 06/11/2019 20:38

“Epic was your neighbour quite short and stout like a gorilla, wearing tight, slightly tarzan esq budgie smugglers, when he presented his marrow?”

No! You mean there are more random men out there giving oversized veg away to unsuspecting neighbours? ShockShockShock

In BUDGIE SMUGGLERS???? 😱😱😱

OP posts:
SunnyupLands · 06/11/2019 20:41

Arf Grin dusty.

But I'm rather Blush I didn't realise you can make booze from just anything with enough sugar.

Hopefully JC doesn't have realise that this or he will ban veg too Sad.

I wonder what Farage would do under JC rule.

What does JC drink?
