Apparently the usual landlady over ordered on Bar nuts on the last thread. Just step over them if you find them here, as we haven’t had a chance to clear them up yet.

“Just wow. I'm all for doing what we can to reduce emissions, but this scale of change so quickly is not achievable. What do Labour want us to heat our homes with exactly? And who will be paying for all this?”

God knows, it’s an absolute joke. I can’t believe some people are lapping it up.

We all desperately want/need a reduction in emissions, but the infrastructure must be there, otherwise it’s nothing more than a commitment to fail. The infrastructure is not there yet. And if Large business is driven away by prohibitive profit opportunities a-la Labour’s stupid business policies, who will drive this minblowingly expensive innovation? Who will produce the much needed hardware, who will employ the people to implement it?

Last I looked, the labour cabinet wasn’t exactly full of wind turbine engineers.

Lol at leafletgate 😂

DustyDiamond · 04/11/2019 12:38

If I put new home in bold enough, will Labour buy me one?

Epicwaffle · 04/11/2019 12:40

Ikr @DustyDiamond

Maybe that crazy guy now holds the solution to the future ‘fuel for homes’ problems? 😂

I could see a burgeoning blackmarket in letterbox guff. Wink

Gas Boilers in 24 million homes would have to ripped out

That’s not the published Labour policy though, is it? It’s for new homes not existing homes.

Making new homes zero carbon by 2016 was Labour policy and was scrapped by the Tories in 2015. And it’s on the advice of the Committee on Climate Change, which advises Government.

I can’t believe some people are lapping it up.

I can’t believe people can’t understand that natural gas is a finite resource, adds to climate change and is not a sustainable solution.

Epicwaffle · 04/11/2019 12:43

Labour’s exciting new emissions policy.

Oh, I don't know, Epicwaffle. Don't wind turbine engineers have to have at least a working knowledge of the effects of the generation of massive amounts of hot air and general, erm, windiness?

Related skills, and all that.

Epicwaffle · 04/11/2019 12:45

“I can’t believe people can’t understand that natural gas is a finite resource, adds to climate change and is not a sustainable solution.”

I can’t believe, that you can’t believe that people fully understand this. Yet still objectively understand that it takes time to implement these new infrastructure projects.

Yay! “I can’t believe” top trumps!

Your turn...

I defer to this well considered point, truly an untapped and previously unconsidered renewable resource!

I can't believe, that you can't believe, that Continuity can't believe that people can't believe, that fossil fuels are a finite resource.

People do know this, but also some people can't believe that people can know this whilst still believing that there are better ways than the Marxist comrades fantasy of 'willing it to happen makes it so'.

In short 😉 - it is not possible to make the UK net zero emissions by 2030 without draconian actions.
People know this is a nonsense policy.

New homes

👆 that's 3 times now - where's my house?!

ContinuityError · 04/11/2019 12:56

Well you appear to think that wind turbines seem to be the only alternative Hmm

Plenty of homes are not connected to gas infrastructure, in case you hadn’t noticed, and there are a host of alternatives for providing low carbon heating. No infrastructure required.

For larger new build housing schemes then community heating and energy plants are very viable, together with spatial design, insulation, glazing, MVHR etc.

You seem to be a bit behind the curve in this sort of thing - perhaps you missed the Stirling Prize this year?

ContinuityError · 04/11/2019 13:00

Oh dear dusty, did you not realise that new homes are only for us Marxists?

Epicwaffle · 04/11/2019 13:03

“Well you appear to think that wind turbines seem to be the only alternative hmm”

It was a singular example and clearly tongue in cheek! Jeez, I know all of us don’t write long ‘winded’ essays on here. But fgs. I would have thought that was fairly clear.

epic the only thing you’re ever clear on is doing the “fgs, I was only joking” when you post flippant nonsense instead of actually debating anything.

Never mind, I’ll leave you to your gassy echo chamber whilst I enjoy my cosy Marxist new home 🤣

The New Marxist Home heated by electric heat pumps which labour's own report admits that on cold days the national grid would reach peak demand. So needs updating (which they acknowledge tbf) ... but not sure its sensible to push people towards buying new homes which have unstable forms of heating before national infrastructure can cope?!

DustyDiamond · 04/11/2019 13:18

S'ok Holly - when Labour leave the country in a shit state again then the Tories can play bad parent again as ever & sort it out.

Such is the cycle of history.

Epicwaffle · 04/11/2019 13:36

“The New Marxist Home heated by electric heat pumps which labour's own report admits that on cold days the national grid would reach peak demand.”

Where can you buy one of these magical homes? (Asking for a friend)

OP posts:
howabout · 04/11/2019 13:53

24 million existing homes in the UK. About 200-300k new homes built a year. If zero carbon only applies to new homes it will take a LONG time before there is much of a dent.

As I understand it both parties have similar plans but slightly different headlines - just like with the NHS.

Suspect the real change will only happen IF the housing market ever properly corrects such that profit can be made from building and investing in housing stock rather than hoarding land and buildings as assets.

Hollycatberry · 04/11/2019 14:24

Tis a good point. I should I add I've no issue with Labour's ambition around this. But if Labour are going for grabby headlines like zero net emissions by 2030 then they need to be able to tell us exactly how they are going to get there given it will affect pretty much every household in the UK.
