Apparently the usual landlady over ordered on Bar nuts on the last thread. Just step over them if you find them here, as we haven’t had a chance to clear them up yet.

Also, Gina Miller has formally set up her tactical voting site to “Stop the Brexit Madness”. Despite doing an interview (I believe with sky) denying that it was her intention to ‘stop brexit’. She was only in it to ‘hold the exec to account’ apparently. (Hugely paraphrased there, as the interview was about a week ago to my recollection. But that was the general gist.)

I was a little taken aback myself, Epicwaffle. A couple of weeks ago, I reported another poster for the first and only time for a serious and unprovoked personal attack on me. It took a couple of days before the offending post was removed.

This one was removed very quickly and was clearly lighthearted and rather mild. Hey ho, live and learn Smile

Epicwaffle · 04/11/2019 09:33

RE Gina miller, strangely, so much handwringing over trump involving himself in our politics (not unduly imo ) but yet not so much over uber rich Miller.

Both come from significant and not terribly balanced spheres of influence, in contrast to the average voter. Ie; Money and Power.

Standard!

Interestingly, there’s very little out there so far about the PV issues. How very odd 🤔 Possible PR spin/blackout in the works maybe? Wink)

I’m going to keep digging to find out more.

I guess it’s too early as yet for #happynopeoplesvoteday? Grin

I'm a cautious type so I waited until Bercow left the chamber for the last time as Speaker before cheering.

The unhappy, disgruntled, disenfranchised (irony alert!) PV staffers are still around and may try to attach themselves to some other organisation focused on the noble cause of cancelling the real people's vote giving us another opportunity to think again so I would say too early yet.

Anyway, as far as I'm concerned, this election is a second referendum in all but name.

The Times is reporting today that John McDonnell and Diane Abbott cornered Jezza in his allotment and persuaded him to move the Labour Party to an unequivocal Remain position (trying to out-Swinson Swinson) and he agreed to write an article to that effect. Till Seumas Milne found out and (another irony alert!) cancelled their vote.

You couldn't make it up, could you?

Agreed! I will pocket my hashtag until the appropriate time! 😂

Slight diversion here but for some reason, the Times article reminded me of a Telegraph article by William Hague who recalled that when he was Foreign Secretary, Jeremy Corbyn would make an appointment to see him each week. JC would ask WH very politely to force the Knesset to change policy on Palestine. WH would explain just as politely why he, even as Foreign Secretary, did not have the power to tell another country's government what to do. JC would listen carefully, thank him for his time and go on his way.

At the next appointment the following week, they'd have exactly the same polite conversation all over again.

It must have been like Groundhog Day, but with different biscuits on the tea tray each week.

Good report from the BBC on calls to not use the NHS as a political football in the election.

I think this quote is right on - "While there were areas where "the NHS is falling short", he said "over-dramatising or distorting the difficulties for political ends will do nothing to help those frontline staff who are working flat out for patients"

I see so much of this on MN threads about the election or health care in general. Posters pile in with ridiculous statements of opinion around privatisation etc without any understanding of how it all currently works.

I saw a thread get zapped the other day (it was either about NHS or tax) because of sock puppet accounts. Guess in the run up to the election it is going to be rife with this behaviour.

Actually wish you could report MN posts that have baseless claims or scaremongering opinions so a little banner gets added with "this post may contain inaccurate info". That would be fantastic.

Thanks @holly

It’s good to hear a voice of Sanity there against the “NHS sell off” madness!

Interesting that he feels the main issue at hand is significantly increased demand on NHS services.

I agree @epicwaffle its good to hear NHS leaders publicly speaking and combating the lies being banded around. Both sides need to keep things factual otherwise it going scare vulnerable people unnecessarily. Which in turns causes more demand especially over the winter.

In the Times, there's a summary (behind the paywall unfortunately) covering the six key battleground areas in this GE.
Under environmental, the article says:

"A vote at Labour's annual conference committed the party to a target for the UK of "net zero emissions" by 2030. This would require drastic changes to people's lives that would be deeply unpopular, which may explain why the party has failed to explain how it would be met. Gas Boilers in 24 million homes would have to ripped out and diesel and petrol made prohibitively expensive."

Just wow. I'm all for doing what we can to reduce emissions, but this scale of change so quickly is not achievable. What do Labour want us to heat our homes with exactly? And who will be paying for all this?

Clavinova · 04/11/2019 12:14

I clicked on Mistigri's Twitter link -

Slightly amusing retweet on there; home security footage of newly elected Lib Dem Councillor removing Labour Party leaflets from letterboxes. Grin

SingingLily · 04/11/2019 12:17

What do Labour want us to heat our homes with exactly? And who will be paying for all this?

Good questions.

It's quite possible that even Labour doesn't know the answer to the first one.

We all know the answer to the second one, though.

ContinuityError · 04/11/2019 12:26

You do realise that the Labour policy is make new homes low carbon by 2022? And it’s not that different from Hammond’s policy to phase out gas boilers in new homes by 2025?

And it is perfectly possible - I live in a zero carbon new build that uses a community heating system. It’s much cheaper than running a gas boiler.

SingingLily · 04/11/2019 12:34

Mine's not a new home, ContinuityError.

From The Times:
Gas Boilers in 24 million homes would have to ripped out

Including mine. The boiler I had replaced at great cost last year as it was the most energy efficient on the market.

And the question "Who would pay?" still stands.
