It looks like a December General Election is on.

The EU have officially extended A50 until 31st January. We have to name an EU Commissioner though.

All that seems left to do is decide between the 9th and 12th December.

The difference between the two is about whether there is any possibility that the WAB can be passed before Parliament dissolves.

A pre-brexit GE is thought to favour the LDs at the expense of Labour and the Conservatives. What the Brexit Party decide to do and where they decide to stand will also be crucial.

but I'm not sure how Twitter will be able to stop paid people posting tweets in support of their paymaster

Most of those tweets will be seen by only the true believers.

I think removing political ads is quite significant actually. They get promoted into your timeline unless you opt out, whereas you have to opt into reading un promoted posts.

Mistigri · 31/10/2019 08:33

I'm more or less resigned to the British public doing the wrong thing. It's not like they don't have form. But there will be some fun to be had: Johnson's seat is surely vulnerable and other big beasts will be slain too.

prettybird · 31/10/2019 08:35

Misti - I think your offer of being a proxy voter for British voters abroad is an excellent one Smile. Christmas post will otherwise dis-enfranchise them Xmas Shock

Gawd.
92.
Labour predicted a win.
Tory landslide.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 31/10/2019 08:40

I cried so much when the result was announced, I wish I'd never been interested in politics, might have made life a bit easier lol

This is what the media have been sneering about for 6 months and pretending not to ‘understand’ it. Or calling it a ‘muddle’.

I alternate between excitement and bricking it grin like I've said before havent felt like this since Kinnock v Thatcher '92

Wasn’t ‘92 the election Major won (from his soapbox)?

ARoomWithoutADoor · 31/10/2019 08:43

pmk (goes back to read thread)

JustAnotherPoster00 · 31/10/2019 08:44

Oh maybe Oubliette meds make my memory unreliable with some things but it was def Kinnock Grin I think youre def right though

OublietteBravo · 31/10/2019 08:44

Surely the way to watch the General Election results is to go to bed immediately after the results of the exit poll are announced and then get up at 3am to watch the interesting bit unfold? Have I been doing it wrong?

Britain is suffering from ‘political amnesia’: millions of families endure turmoil at the hands of government polices – yet as the years pass, it barely gets a mention. >> My col. in today’s paper

I'll probably be at the count on election night. Not sure why I signed up for that....

OublietteBravo · 31/10/2019 08:48

I’m starting to see some evident of pro-remain pragmatism.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 31/10/2019 08:49

Have I been doing it wrong?

I think we've got so many high profile candidates with slim majorities the upset is going to be the 'drama' of the night for sure, oh and how quickly Farridge can exit a building if he doesnt win the seat he's going to try to get

mummmy2017 · 31/10/2019 08:49

So you all know, I voted leave, I voted Tory.
So swing me?
Because unless you can, your going to see a leave Parliament returned.

bellinisurge · 31/10/2019 08:50

I have a Halloween present for you mummmy.
You are = you're

I'll be presenting the following day so I will be going to be early, with a sleeping tablet if I can procure one, and trying not to think about it.

It will be an interesting week at the professional-political boundary. I do wonder what senior management colleagues who normally vote Tory will do. I suppose all the delay means that Brexit is now less of an issue for us, as plans to move jobs to the EU are well advanced. So they might vote Fatberg anyway.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 31/10/2019 08:51

I honestly hope this is the 'Get the Tories Out' election 2017 should have been

prettybird · 31/10/2019 08:52

It wasn't exactly a landslide for the Conservatives in 1992 (their majority was down to only 21 and by 1996 it was down to 1 and by 1997 was a minority government) - but it felt like that because Labour were expected even by the Tories to win Sad

Here's hoping that BJ's arrogance will be come a cropper Grin

But I too will be watching all night on the 12th through my fingers Halloween HmmHalloween ShockHaloween SadHalloween Confused

QueenOfThorns · 31/10/2019 08:52

Misti - I think your offer of being a proxy voter for British voters abroad is an excellent one

Sadly, I don’t think this is possible. Gov.uk says this: You can ask anyone to act as your proxy, as long as they are registered to vote and it’s for a type of election they’re allowed to vote in.

I think that @Mistigri said she couldn’t vote, so she can’t be a proxy either Sad

mummmy2017 · 31/10/2019 08:52

Mistigri · 31/10/2019 08:54

Genuinely, and this isn't meant to be trolling, do you never ask yourself why your political project keeps failing in the face of the weakest opposition faced by any PM since Ian Duncan Smith sat opposite Tony Blair?

Violetparis · 31/10/2019 08:54

Just I will join you for an election all nighter as I'm not at work on the Friday. I will also join you on the leftie bench as I'm voting Labour.

Hoooo · 31/10/2019 08:55

mummy
No thanks :)
There are former leave and tory voters that can be swung. But not you. You delight in your "status" as both of those things.
I'm no corbyn fan but he is, by EVERY conceivable measure, a better MP, Leader and human being than Boris Johnson.
And lets be honest here, if the state of education, the nhs and dismantling of the welfare system didn't swing you in 2017, it isnt going to now, is it?
Hqppy 3rd no brexit day x

Thanks - I did wonder (I could have looked it up of course)
