It looks like a December General Election is on.

The EU have officially extended A50 until 31st January. We have to name an EU Commissioner though.

All that seems left to do is decide between the 9th and 12th December.

The difference between the two is about whether there is any possibility that the WAB can be passed before Parliament dissolves.

A pre-brexit GE is thought to favour the LDs at the expense of Labour and the Conservatives. What the Brexit Party decide to do and where they decide to stand will also be crucial.

assuming he's not parachuted into a safer seat. But then there's no way 'hard man' Boris can spin that. That is just him running scared. And that safe seat may become less safe as a consequence

don't want him as my MP but if they parachuted him in here and it made the seat less safe, I'd be very happy as my vote might actually count for once.

prettybird · 30/10/2019 13:24

List of those who will be stepping down at this election, with mini profiles of the 11 high profile one. There's one on that list who won't be missed by the party that she supposedly represents Wink

https://news.sky.com/story/general-election-2019-11-big-mps-who-are-standing-down-plus-the-full-list-11848416

I note that the Beast of Bolsover, Dennis Skinner, is presumably standing again as he's not in that list. He's 87! Shock

Hoooo · 30/10/2019 13:30

just I know a local labour activist quite well. He is a rabid anti semite. We very rarely speak now as I called him out on it.

Labour hasn't dealt with this issue. At all. It's going to cost them dearly, sadly.

DGRossetti · 30/10/2019 13:33

@ElectionMapsUK
UKIP Leader Richard Braine has resigned.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 30/10/2019 13:34

Labour hasn't dealt with this issue.

I didnt say they had sorted it Hoo but theyre in the process and with Jenny Formby and the new measures in tackling it should help, can I just say any antisemitsm is too much imo

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 30/10/2019 13:40

Richard Braine - living proof that nominative determinism is a myth

Hoooo · 30/10/2019 13:44

Until labour is purged of its extremists, and the tories too, we are in very, very dangerous waters.

Any extremism is bad. Just as any form of racism is bad.

BercowsPoliticalPumpkin · 30/10/2019 13:44

This is in bad taste. As much as I hate trump and bozo I do t think it's right to do this.

Is there a COPINE equivalent of scale for anti semitism ?

dreichsky · 30/10/2019 13:53

@PickledOnion99
I have been thinking this as well. Sadly I think Boris appeals to same people Nige appeals to though.

PotterHead1985 · 30/10/2019 13:55

Not a hope will he admit that anything he did as Mayor of London could have contributed to the disaster at Grenfell.

Frankiestein402 · 30/10/2019 14:09

As a Lancastrian living in the south for over a decade I'm all too familiar with thick northerner tropes - yet my current constituency is Hertsmere with a solid Conservative majority - I perceive hertsmere voters as not necessarily thick but most definitely as masochists.

The issue is tribal voting whether Northerner or Southerner.

Yeah since the last election we've been using the slogan 'For the many not the few' but as always the trolls change it to 'for the many not the jew' but internal HOC polling data shows how over blown the coverage has been and internal Labour procedure is already trying to deal with the antisemitsm within Labour but its certainly been used by those with an axe to grind against Corbyn

Oh dear. This time it looks like a desperate "Deflect, Deflect, Deflect!" strategy might not be enough to save Labour over its chronic antisemitism:

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/labour-party-bankruptcy-antisemitism-investigation-corbyn-executive-a9153561.html

Members of Labour’s ruling executive have privately voiced fears that the party could be bankrupted as a result of an official inquiry into antisemitism, The Independent has learnt.

Members of the National Executive Committee (NEC) have expressed concerns that a damning verdict from the equalities watchdog about Labour’s handling of antisemitic abuse could open the party up to a slew of lawsuits from Jewish members and former members, possibly resulting in hefty damages having to be paid.

Some NEC members are worried that the financial situation could become unmanageable if the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) finds that the party has failed to protect Jewish members.

So I guess the Equality and Human Rights Commission is just another group "with an axe to grind against Corbyn", right? Right.

Oakenbeach · 30/10/2019 14:12

I’m disappointed there isn’t a Martin Bell type candidate (ie opponent of Neil Hamilton in 1997) standing in Uxbridge to unite opposition against BJ. Why not!?

JustAnotherPoster00 · 30/10/2019 14:12

an official inquiry into antisemitism

I for one welcome the inquiry, and an inquiry does not imply guilt until a verdict I assume?

Hoooo · 30/10/2019 14:12

Very true frank

boatyardblues · 30/10/2019 14:15

UKIP Leader Richard Braine has resigned.

Not another one!

prettybird · 30/10/2019 14:15

It's a bit disingenuous to say that there are already 100+ MPs that are neither Labour nor Conservative, howabout Confused

They may have lost or resigned the whip but this was after the Government had been formed. As far as the numbers who were voted in as either Conservative or Labour, that number that are neither of them is under 70 (or just over, if you count Sinn Fein). It was 87 in 2015 (including 4 Sinn Fein Wink and 1 UKIP Hmm).

So 100+ elected not-Labour-and-not-Tory MPs does make a difference when speculating who will be in a position to form a government and the likelihood of a hung parliament. Especially if c100 of them are SNP, LibDem, Green and Plaid Cymru Shock

howabout · 30/10/2019 14:20

pretty my point was more that if it is 100 non Labour / Tory then it is no change from the current shambles.

However if the remaining balance is 350+ Tory and 200- Labour (entirely possible) then the 100 non Labour / Tory become irrelevant.

PotterHead1985 · 30/10/2019 14:28

I would also welcome an enquiry into anti semitism. I agree an enquiry does NOT imply the guilt of any person. It is purely to investigate claims of and report on. At that point it is then incumbent on the party to take the results and apply them correctly.

There is no place in party politics for any form of racism, bigotry etc. It is the 21st century and the politicians from local level up represent a diverse group of peoples from all walks of life and should do so equally and respectfully.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 30/10/2019 14:40

Exactly this ^^

DGRossetti · 30/10/2019 14:41

There is no place in party politics for any form of racism, bigotry etc.

Which, ironically, is a bigoted view ...

BigChocFrenzy · 30/10/2019 14:44

"it is 100 non Labour / Tory then it is no change from the current shambles."

That would be a very significant result, because it would achieves the aim of denying the Tories a majority

This time, not by MPs swapping from the rosette under which they were elected.

In fact many of us would regard a "directly elected" hung parliament as a great vistory,
since the expected result is currently a large Tory win and 5 years of hard right policies

CendrillonSings · 30/10/2019 14:45

Of course it's just an inquiry at this point. But ordinary inquiries usually don't have the top brass of an organization agonizing that the outcome could lead to fines large enough to destroy said organization...

ArseDarkly · 30/10/2019 14:48

I know a local labour activist quite well. He is a rabid anti semite. We very rarely speak now as I called him out on it.

Hoooo can you give examples of what this person said/did to reveal their anti-semitism?
