It looks like a December General Election is on.

The EU have officially extended A50 until 31st January. We have to name an EU Commissioner though.

All that seems left to do is decide between the 9th and 12th December.

The difference between the two is about whether there is any possibility that the WAB can be passed before Parliament dissolves.

A pre-brexit GE is thought to favour the LDs at the expense of Labour and the Conservatives. What the Brexit Party decide to do and where they decide to stand will also be crucial.

what is Labour's SOUNDBITE Brexit policy going to be? the one that is comprehensible to a Tabloid Reader Workington Man
no more than five words

“New deal then second referendum”

Ok it’s not exactly catchy, but it is within your word count!

squid4 · 30/10/2019 08:44

I confirm I can’t park at my own hospital!!

NoWordForFluffy · 30/10/2019 08:45

I think the LDs have been really active at unis since they went back. Hopefully they're getting the message across, even if the student isn't going to vote for them.

In fact, the LDs have been very active for months generally. They're very prepared for this GE.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 30/10/2019 08:45

Does it need to be though Listening? I dont believe it does I think it benefits no one but Farridge and Johnson to keep things so simplistic

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 30/10/2019 08:46

@JustAnotherPoster00

That’s an impressive list

ListeningQuietly · 30/10/2019 08:47

New Deal then Second Referendum
New Deal with or without the SM?
New Deal means nothing
Why would the EU bother with a New Deal
They have done two already both of which went in the bin

JustAnotherPoster00 · 30/10/2019 08:47

God, that list Justanotherposter ... it really is the hope that kills you isn’t it?

Very much so, I havent been this excited/bricking it since '92 if I'm honest and we all know how that turned out Grin

Violetparis · 30/10/2019 08:47

I thought 'Let the people decide' was a Labour soundbite for their Brexit policy.

wondering7777 · 30/10/2019 08:47

To me Workington Man sounds like some ancient Briton whose remains have been dug up at Sutton Hoo.

ListeningQuietly · 30/10/2019 08:50

JustAnother
If Labour do not have a clear message for Low Information Voters
they type who say just get it done
those people will vote for the party that gives them simple solutions

JustAnotherPoster00 · 30/10/2019 08:52

those people will vote for the party that gives them simple solutions

I dont think those type of people are as numerous as the MSM would have you believe

wondering7777 · 30/10/2019 08:53

Why would the EU bother with a New Deal

Because the EU don’t want us to leave the EU?

They also said there would be no more negotiations after TM’s deal but they did open talks again with Boris.

wondering7777 · 30/10/2019 08:56

Anyway, I feel sorry for the people of Workington, who will no doubt have swarms of camera crews and journalists descending on them over the next five weeks!

Violetparis · 30/10/2019 08:56

I would argue that the Lib Dem policiy of Revoke is also a 'simple solution'. Plenty of negative consequences around that (issues of democracy, disenfranchised moving further to the right) which is not mentioned.

ListeningQuietly · 30/10/2019 08:59

I don't think those type of people are as numerous as the MSM would have you believe
Statistically they are 1/3 of the population.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 30/10/2019 09:13

PMK

prettybird · 30/10/2019 09:13

I think it's a sad indictment of UK education and the degree of political engagement that it is now accepted that simplistic messages and voter apathy will win out Angry.

Percentage turnout used to be much higher and there appeared to be was a section of the "working class" (I know that's an over-generalisation) that took a pride in being well read Sad

This decline seems to have accelerated over the last 50 years Sad

MollyButton · 30/10/2019 09:15

The Lib Dem policy is "Revoke if they win an overall majority" which would be such a cataclysmic landslide - that I really think it would be hard to argue that it was anti-democratic.

The feeling of 'fuck you' that some of the 17.4 are going to feel would be palpable, were going to have to wind that energy in some way or as BCF says were going to end up swinging wildly into more and more authoritarian governments

HesterThrale · 30/10/2019 09:20

How about this sound bite?

GET BREXIT GONE!

MockersthefeMANist · 30/10/2019 09:21

If the school system is to blame for idiot voters, then we must blame the schools in the 50s, 60s and 70s when the idiots were at school.

(or shoplifting in Woolworths)

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 30/10/2019 09:29

I don’t it’s fair to refer to idiot voters. I have seen other threads on the GE where Tory voters are being called thick and heartless etc.

If we want a better standard of politics in this country then we all have to engage in a positive way with the people we don’t agree with.

Politicians, within reason, are fair game as they put themselves into the public eye but individual voters don’t, most people make the decision they think is right.

prettybird · 30/10/2019 09:33

I'm not sure who to blame for the decline in intelligent debate and political engagement. Not sure it's education per se.

It's probably a perfect storm of complacency from 70+ years of peace in (Western) Europe, a lack of awareness of what life was life was like before the Welfare State and NHS (so not realising how fragile and precious they are), natural cycles of left v right, our confrontational FPTP political system combined with the rise of social media and the ability to manipulate not just on a macro level but on a micro level Sad

MockersthefeMANist · 30/10/2019 09:36

Only two jobs in Workington: Fishing and Sellafield.

Maybe if BJ promises more radiation and prawns the size of a bus?

RedToothBrush · 30/10/2019 09:40

I wonder how many 'visitors' MN will have over the next 6 weeks?

I'm fairly sure that in addition to Workington Man and Sophicasted Sarah (thanks Lord Sugar) Mumsnet Melanie has also been identified...
