Westministenders: Sub-Prime Minister at large

BigChocFrenzy · 25/10/2019 13:24

Our Sub-Prime Minister BJ is threatening a govt tantrum strike until he is allowed his Haribo GE on 12 December.

If MPs vote for a GE, he has promised them "more time" to debate the WAB,
but that would only be from 29 October to 7 November

  • ridiculously inadequate for such complex legislation -
before Parliament is automatically dissolved for the 25 sitting days before a GE.

The GE debate starts Monday 2:30 pm in the HoC
Corbyn says he'll agree to a GE if BJ takes No Deal off the table

BUT wIth this WA,
No deal cannot 100% be taken off the table whilst the Tories are in office:

they could still No Deal after transition ends on 31 December 2020,
if they don't request a transition by July.

We don't know when the EU will give their decision on an extension, or what it will be:

The EU may decide only after the HoC vote
- in which case MPs would be voting "blindly"

Tusk, Merkel & most other leaders want to grant the Flextension until 31 January,
but Macron & a few others want to give a short extension of only 2-4 weeks, to pressure MPs to pass the WA in November

  • in which case the GE would take place shortly after Brexit, which would be a gift to BJ.

A 12 December GE would also cause serious logistical problems for local council officials:

Apart from their poll station bookings clashing with Xmas bookings for church halls & schools,

they are legally required to send out all the polling cards based on the current electoral roll,
then at the GE, check names against the new electoral roll which must be updated on 1 December

The Rebel Alliance want a long extension, so they have time to add amendments to the WAB,
e.g. a CU, the Level Playing Field agreement in May's WA, maybe even a PV
So many may want to vote against a GE before that ..... but what does Corbyn want ?

BJ as PM could still change the date of any GE after he has agreed to it, if it suits him.

What does BJ want ?
Alice Cooper said it:

"I'm your top prime cut of meat, I'm your choice
I wanna be elected
I'm your yankee doodle dandy in a gold Rolls Royce
I wanna be elected
Kids want a savior, don't need a fake

I wanna be elected
We're all gonna rock to the rules that I make
I wanna be elected, elected, elected..."

I am so fed up with the whole bloody lot of them.

ClashCityRocker · 27/10/2019 09:28

On the plus side, he can't really moan that Jeremy wanted an election then refused to vote for one.. M

prettybird · 27/10/2019 09:35

We've learnt from experience that anything that is led by the SNP/LibDems won't be supported on principle Hmm by Labour - so I don't have any great faith even if the proposal has logic, that Labour would get over its visceral dislike of the two parties to pass it. Angry

They also don't have the right to put forward VONCs, unlike the "Official Opposition" Hmm. There is a limit to how often SO24 can be used. Sad

chomalungma · 27/10/2019 09:41

Eh?

So the Conservatives won't support a call for an election because they want an election?

NoWordForFluffy · 27/10/2019 09:43

The government's OWN ADVISOR said it'll take a minimum of 37 sitting days to deal with the WAIB. This fucking 5 day nonsense is doing my fucking head in. Why is NOBODY challenging the government by quoting their own advisor's plan back to them? Why are our journalists so utterly fucking useless?

MockersthefeMANist · 27/10/2019 09:46

Why are our journalists so utterly fucking useless?

The internet.

They used to have to leave the office with notebooks and little stubby pencils to find the story. Now, they just Google it.

NoWordForFluffy · 27/10/2019 09:47

Actually, I'm wrong. She said 10 days. He's not even allowing this. He's an utter dick. And those 10 days surely didn't allow for vast amendments to be debated.

lonelyplanetmum · 27/10/2019 09:53

What's happening with getting a new speaker- this week? Could be critical if he or she makes a newcomer's procedural error.

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 27/10/2019 09:54

James Cleverly is really anything but. We want our election. Not their election is basically all he's saying.

prettybird · 27/10/2019 09:56

Apparently the elections for the new Speaker will be on 4 November. In the intervening period, the Father of the House will be presiding (but in the seat below the actual Speaker's Chair).

NoWordForFluffy · 27/10/2019 09:58

Refusing an election because you want an election, but only on your terms, is ridiculous.

But, as you say, JC can now throw this at him but I bet he won't in the HoC. Someone else will have to.

This entire thing is making lose the will to live.

prettybird · 27/10/2019 10:00

My fear about England potentially winning the Rugby World Cup quite apart from the fact that I'm Scottish Wink is that it might create a patriotic "bounce" and feel good factor that would benefit BJ Shock

TheMShip · 27/10/2019 10:06

Why can't Corbyn just call the EU's (Macron's) bluff here, take control of the situation and VONC the govt?

prettybird · 27/10/2019 10:08

Because during the 14 days that an alternative government has to form a government, BJ is still PM.

Which takes us over 31st October. Which until the EU has confirmed the extension means No Deal.

TheMShip · 27/10/2019 10:11

Why wouldn't the EU confirm a 31 Jan extension in that case? Mandatory acceptance.

TheABC · 27/10/2019 10:13

Johnson reminds me of the drowning swimmer story.

"Don't go into the sea: there's warning triangles out"
"If you must go into the sea, stay away from the riptide around the rocks"
"If you insist on swimming around the rocks,at least take this float".
"No, we don't have one in red to match your trunks"

JustAnotherPoster00 · 27/10/2019 10:18

Personally I think being pragmatic about an election while No Deal is still on the table is the right call for Corbyn, the SNP are playing to their own base knowing that the majority in Scotland is for remaining, the LibDems seem to be governed by polling and I think that bite them in the ass, Remain still isn’t polling high enough to guarantee a Remain result, Labour have consistently said no election till No Deal off the table, if Macron wants to interfere in that then it’s on him and the Tory parties constant delaying because of the backstop non of this thankfully can be blamed on Corbyn (yet) he’s consistently abided by decisions made at conference and that article in the independent about people not falling for the ‘Labour is delaying Brexit’ narrative

...I overheard Patrick Grady, SNP WM Whip, explaining this last night. I was at a party which was also attended by Alison Thewliss, Nicola and Patrick Grady (amongst others, but I couldn't place their names). (BTW: never go to a function where the FM might be selling raffle tickets - she doesn't take "No" for an answer, even if you have no money on you - "You'll be good for it." Hmm)

If it's any consolation probably not much there was a definite sense that no-one knows what's going to happen next Confused

Bearbehind · 27/10/2019 10:24

I don’t understand how Corbyn or anyone else thinks no deal can be taken off the table completely - it’s the default

If we can’t agree a deal but still insist on leaving, it’s the only option

How can that ever be avoided?

JustAnotherPoster00 · 27/10/2019 10:26

I’m aware of that hunky trust me I truly am, but I think the Macron thing isn’t bluster he doesn’t want to be seen capitulating to the British request to quickly after all we pile a heap of shit on the French if we No Deal as regards to poets but luckily they have planned better than we have so Macron can be a bit tougher than the EU main imo

JustAnotherPoster00 · 27/10/2019 10:28

Bear you not understanding how people think is no surprise to many of us here who have empathy and consider others before ourselves

JustAnotherPoster00 · 27/10/2019 10:29
  • is bluster not isn’t
JustAnotherPoster00 · 27/10/2019 10:31

Oh ffs, I’m not sure why French poets have to do with Brexit although the ports might

Bearbehind · 27/10/2019 10:33

Bear you not understanding how people think is no surprise to many of us here who have empathy and consider others before ourselves

just you constant insults are tedious

It matters not one bit what you ‘like’ to happen

Could you please explain how it is technically possible to take no deal off the table
