Westministenders: Sub-Prime Minister at large

BigChocFrenzy · 25/10/2019 13:24

Our Sub-Prime Minister BJ is threatening a govt tantrum strike until he is allowed his Haribo GE on 12 December.

If MPs vote for a GE, he has promised them "more time" to debate the WAB,
but that would only be from 29 October to 7 November

  • ridiculously inadequate for such complex legislation -
before Parliament is automatically dissolved for the 25 sitting days before a GE.

The GE debate starts Monday 2:30 pm in the HoC
Corbyn says he'll agree to a GE if BJ takes No Deal off the table

BUT wIth this WA,
No deal cannot 100% be taken off the table whilst the Tories are in office:

they could still No Deal after transition ends on 31 December 2020,
if they don't request a transition by July.

We don't know when the EU will give their decision on an extension, or what it will be:

The EU may decide only after the HoC vote
- in which case MPs would be voting "blindly"

Tusk, Merkel & most other leaders want to grant the Flextension until 31 January,
but Macron & a few others want to give a short extension of only 2-4 weeks, to pressure MPs to pass the WA in November

  • in which case the GE would take place shortly after Brexit, which would be a gift to BJ.

A 12 December GE would also cause serious logistical problems for local council officials:

Apart from their poll station bookings clashing with Xmas bookings for church halls & schools,

they are legally required to send out all the polling cards based on the current electoral roll,
then at the GE, check names against the new electoral roll which must be updated on 1 December

The Rebel Alliance want a long extension, so they have time to add amendments to the WAB,
e.g. a CU, the Level Playing Field agreement in May's WA, maybe even a PV
So many may want to vote against a GE before that ..... but what does Corbyn want ?

BJ as PM could still change the date of any GE after he has agreed to it, if it suits him.

What does BJ want ?
Alice Cooper said it:

"I'm your top prime cut of meat, I'm your choice
I wanna be elected
I'm your yankee doodle dandy in a gold Rolls Royce
I wanna be elected
Kids want a savior, don't need a fake
I wanna be elected
We're all gonna rock to the rules that I make
I wanna be elected, elected, elected..."

Oh dear lord, I might have to start drinking that gin in the fridge 😩

Dontlickthetrolley · 26/10/2019 11:35

There are currently 6 of the local Conservative Party (minus our ERGer MP) currently knocking on doors on the street. I was not mentally prepared for that arguement so I didn't open the door (although they must have known we were in as my boys were yelling who is it quite loudly!)

It's now absolutely tipping it down, I'm hoping the 2 are connected Grin

Sostenueto · 26/10/2019 11:35

Thank you so much to all for congrats for dgdFlowers I can tell you the relief of that first offer was sweet! I won't put unis applied for but they are all Russell Group unis.Smile

Sostenueto · 26/10/2019 11:39

If the PM keeps asking and demeaning JC for not voting for GE at the moment why doesn't JC say in no uncertain terms at the despatch box that he does not trust BJ and here's proof of stripping workers of their rights in black and white from his government and really call him out instead of taking abuse all the while?

NoWordForFluffy · 26/10/2019 11:42

Because he's not bloody competent opposition. Anybody competent would be fighting fire with fire, not meekly accepting the accusations levelled at him. That's why.

Ellie56 · 26/10/2019 11:56

If the Leader of the Opposition was in any way a competent orator, Johnson would be floored every time, especially with all the lies and crap he spouts.

Peregrina · 26/10/2019 12:16

Quite Ellie.

I am going away for a few days. See you all on the next thread but one, or two.

I think we will still be in the EU when I get back. Either way, my passport should still work for the EU gates.

ListeningQuietly · 26/10/2019 12:35

Delighted that Sos DGD's future is starting to pan out excellently.

Very fast offers do happen - I know of an RG Uni for a high competition course that made an offer in 13 hours Smile

Icantreachthepretzels · 26/10/2019 12:41

although they must have known we were in as my boys were yelling who is it quite loudly!

You should have yelled back - equally loudly - it's the conservative party and we're not opening the door to them because they're fucking shite - and then watched out of the bedroom window as they tiptoed back down the path Grin

I think I agree with Fluffy on the GE ... but there are so many unknowns.

ListeningQuietly · 26/10/2019 12:48

Sostenueto
I was arguing with a Corbynite in the pub last night
trying to make her realise that Labours fence sitting has stopped them from calling out Brexit as a right wing plot to destroy workers rights and the British natural environment

But the person is convinced that JC can get a worker friendly Brexit easily
they do accept that he voted Leave though after meeting him at a small event recently Sad

Labour's inaction has allowed the ERG to get away with anything it likes Angry

NoWordForFluffy · 26/10/2019 12:48

Well, makes a change from me nodding along with you, pretzels! Grin

I'm glad your sister got sorted, by the way. I saw your post but the thread filled before I got a chance to reply / acknowledge you!

DGRossetti · 26/10/2019 12:54

In a passage that could alarm Labour MPs who have backed the Brexit bill, the leaked government document also said the drafting of workers’ rights and environmental protection commitments *“leaves room for interpretation”.

Well hopefully it's not too late, and those MPs can take advantage of what the public are denied and change their minds ? Admittedly it might shaft Boris, but then to be brutally frank, no Labour MP should ever have been in a position of supporting a Tory cunt.

MockersthefeMANist · 26/10/2019 12:56

Tories knocking at your door?

Oh for the bygone days of sash windows and chamber pots.

ListeningQuietly · 26/10/2019 12:58

Am happy to be corrected
but
I believe that there are no restrictions on setting
higher employment / environment / welfare / rights standards than the EU ones
it is only
lower rights that have to be specifically cleared and agreed

borntobequiet · 26/10/2019 13:13

My ex-(and sadly deceased)MIL used to answer Conservative (and all other canvassers) with “I don’t vote for no bastard”. On occasion, when she was out and I opened the door, I also told them that she didn’t vote for no bastard.

Ellie56 · 26/10/2019 13:36

born Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 26/10/2019 13:51

listening The EU has a "floor" of minimum requirements, which were in May's WA

This is certainly not a "ceiling",
so under the old WA we could have chosen to go above the minimum,
just as we and other member countries do already for some things.

The problem with BJ's WA is that none of these measures are in the legally binding bit of the WA,
so any amendment MPs pass now could be repealed by a future Tory govt,
which could choose a race to the bottom and Mumbai-on-Thames

To have permanent legally binding measures, we would need the EU's agreement to put them into the WA

They would have been fine with that months ago, but we don't know if they would even consider adding a section to the WA at this stage
They want the WA settled before about June, when the EU negotiations on the 7-year budget get to the critical stage and where the UK could wreck things - they don't trust us not to.

thecat All serious political analysts agree that there are not the votes in the HoC for a PV, let alone for Revoke
That is why we have not had a recent vote on either - Starmer, Grieve & co know they would lose

We need to focus on what is achievable, rather than on what we wish could happen

OP posts:
BigChocFrenzy · 26/10/2019 13:58

Eventually, we will run out of extensions & time,
because the EU can't risk extending beyond June at the latest, when their 7-year budget will be agreed

At this stage it is likely there will not be a majority in the HoC for either Revoke or No Deal
However, by A50 default, No deal is what would happen

OP posts:
thecatfromjapan · 26/10/2019 13:58

I would agree with that, re votes for OB, BigChoc. And that's why I posted the Jonathon Lis tweet.

He's talking about a situation arising in the face of No Deal - which is a specific (and unlikely) situation.

I just thought it was interesting - for a number of reasons.

thecatfromjapan · 26/10/2019 13:58

PV - not OB.

BigChocFrenzy · 26/10/2019 14:00

Of course, we could run out of time much earlier, at the end of January,
or at the end of November, if Macron vetos a longer extension.

BJ gives him political cover for that:
only doing what the UK PM / govt repeatedly requested for several months.

OP posts:
BigChocFrenzy · 26/10/2019 14:07

"in the face of No Deal - which is a specific (and unlikely) situatio"

thecat I agree this stark choice is v unlikely on 31 October,

However, in the following months, it is not only likely, but inevitable, as we hit the end limit for extension date
if MPs keep refusing to choose one of the available options

Even if we get a 31 Jan extension, it is logistically difficult to fit a GE within that time,
so I do fear MPs dithering until we default to No Deal

Or beg the EU for 2 futher months to call a GE - by that stage, they would probably the GE called before they agree

OP posts:
ListeningQuietly · 26/10/2019 14:07

What if the EU gave an extension until three working days after a December General election ?
ie the new parliament has to decide PDQ

  • revoke
  • WA
  • no deal
