Westminstenders: Extension or No Extension

RedToothBrush · 20/10/2019 08:26

Johnson has sent a letter he said he never would asking for an extension.

We now wait to see what the EU come back with.

It's likely to be a technical extension. At best.

France are really not happy with the idea of an extension and Macron is flexing his muscles with the EU at the moment. He has been prepared to upset all the other EU countries as he proved with blocking progress on accession to the EU for Northern Macedonia and Albania this week. Macron is fighting his own domestic battles.

It looks as if Johnson now has a majority for a deal. What that deal will ultimately look like will be dictated by the Withdrawal Agreement Bill which sets out implementation of the Withdrawal Act.

However, with the DUP firmly offside the chances of a vote of no confidence go up. As do the chances of an election.

And its also worth pointing out that whilst the WAB is legally binding if we have an election and Johnson gets a majority, then there can always be changes made to domestic law. (implementation of the WA rather than the agreement principles of the WA agreed with the EU).

Thus any 'assurances' over workers rights and regulatory standards are only as good as long as this parliament...

Presumably he's happy to alienate more moderate Tories cat.

BigChocFrenzy · 21/10/2019 20:15

JRM has on at least 2 occasions used his DC to try to present Remain protestors in the media as "dangerous"

This is deliberate and planned

He is a useless Leader of the House, but an expert user / misuser of the media
He and the ERG want laws to crack down on all dissent, but they need some pretext

I've been concerned about some equivalent to the Reichstag fire for several months now
Or infiltrating a Remain march or online group with agents provocateurs and staging some outrage

ListeningQuietly · 21/10/2019 20:16

Trump : Social media is full of all sorts of crap. I mean actual sources that have evidence of Trump being ill. He's always been sick, but ill is different.

wondering7777 · 21/10/2019 20:16

Personally, I think he's done enough to woo them.

I think so too. And anyone who really wants Brexit will know the best chance of achieving that will be to vote Boris and get him a bigger majority, so he can push his hard Brexit deal through parliament. They will also know that voting BXP could mean a Labour win and a second ref/Brexit cancelled.

Anyway, on that depressing note I’m off to clean the kitchen. Night all! Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 21/10/2019 20:17

imo, this is the most dangerous govt the UK has had since long before universal suffrage

tobee · 21/10/2019 20:17

Has anyone seen any media directly askingJRM why he saw thought to subject his 12 year old to this?

tobee · 21/10/2019 20:19

Listening true what you say about social media but also plenty of people have studied things like his vocabulary etc etc declining in recent years.

thecatfromjapan · 21/10/2019 20:20

imo, this is the most dangerous govt the UK has had since long before universal suffrage

I think you might be right about that, BigChoc.

Dh is a historian, I'm going to try that out on him and see if he can think of worse.

They are easily the most dangerously Far Right I can think of.

mrslaughan · 21/10/2019 20:21

Re - JRM - he didn't feel the need to protect MP's when Anna Soubry was getting abused, or when Bozo was whipping up hate against Mp's. Fucking hypocrite.
I think it stinks of being a PR stunt - again to garner support. The poor us trying to deliver the will of the people......

MockersthefeMANist · 21/10/2019 20:23

It's the longstanding plan of the NeoCons to ditch the increasingly liberal-minded suburban middle-classes and go after the once Thatcherite C2s in their white vans with nationalism, authoritarian crime policies and arbitrary justice based on vox pop. Judges will be if not elected then inspected by judicial OFSTED who will demand more guilty verdicts and heavier sentences in line with policy. Poeple will be held to be responsible for their own social situations. The poor are poor because they are lazy. The rich are rich because they work so hard and are uniquely talented. Taxation will become steadily more regressive but people will feel richer with more money in their pockets to pay for their health insurance, private schooling and security for their homes as the crime rate rockets.

ListeningQuietly · 21/10/2019 20:26

tobee
I've not seen any analytical articles about his health in the UK or US press.
The man is a dangerous moron but I see no evidence that he cannot do 5 more years

tobee · 21/10/2019 20:31

4 years I hope is all Listening! ShockShockShock

tobee · 21/10/2019 20:32

Oh hang on sorry plus the remainder of time for this term! Blush

thecatfromjapan · 21/10/2019 20:38

By the way, it's worth pointing out that Johnson really, really doesn't want a PV.

I suspect that's because he knows he'd lose.

thecatfromjapan · 21/10/2019 20:39

That's worth remembering - because if Brexit is enacted, it will be 'against the will of the people'.

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 21/10/2019 20:41

Well I did think I had a good grasp of what was going on a d the possible outcomes u til today. Now I'm totally baffled. Can anyone give me a KISS explanation please? I'm particularly confused about passing the WA and the WA(I)B. I thought the WA could not be passed until the WA(I)B was agreed? And now there's talk of getting everything through in two days.

Why the hell has no deal not been made something that can never happen by now? The fear of no deal is causing anxiety for so many and is a gun to the head of politicians to get them to agree to a crap deal.

thecatfromjapan · 21/10/2019 20:43

Why the hell has no deal not been made something that can never happen by now?

Labour voted against the Cherry motion. ☹️

thecatfromjapan · 21/10/2019 20:44

Parliament needs to stop panicking and slow the fuck down.

squid4 · 21/10/2019 20:52

I still have hope Labour would do a lot better in a general election than expected.

I said that in 2017 too, when the snap election was called, and everyone laughed at me... a lot.

People being sick of brexit doesn't only equal people voting to get it over with. It also means people voting on things that aren't brexit. Much as the media would have you believe it's all people care about and all we're allowed to vote on.

But I still have my days of despair - plenty of them. I work in A&E and the frontline is pretty grim right now. I suppose I need hope to continue to get up in the morning. (or evening) Maybe I'm just kidding myself?

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 21/10/2019 20:53

Listening

There are a lot of questions being asked by the US press and media about Trump’s health. No one can say for certain what the issues are because they don’t have his medical records. However, the loss of articulate speech and the issues with walking can be seen.

Who altered the hurricane map and why did DT state repeatedly in public that he had never heard of a Cat 5 hurricane (Katrina was Cat 5 - surely he heard of that one). There is something wrong.

thecatfromjapan · 21/10/2019 20:57

No, squid, you're right.

I'm gloomy tonight but ...

Most people don't want Brexit - and Johnson knows that
He's alienating a lot of moderates
People are very angry about austerity - anyone who uses the NHS, has a child in a state school, is caring for an elderly relative, is disabled knows we have to get the Tories out.

So ... absolutely ridiculous descending into a slough if despond.

And despair was written over the entrance to Hell for a reason. There is something crucially anti-life about losing hope - so crucial that it finds itself deeply inscribed into religions.

BigChocFrenzy · 21/10/2019 21:00

Ironically, under FPTP, Farage could yet save us from a Tory GE win.

thecatfromjapan · 21/10/2019 21:01

LOL. 😁

FadingStar · 21/10/2019 21:06

I have seen many comments in the Mail site that Brexit fans are intending to vote for the Brexit party. And no one expected Labour to do as well as they did in the last election but Corbyn was good! He obviously relishes that kind of thing....campaigning and activism and it shows.

Always have hope.

singswithitsfingers · 21/10/2019 21:10

Got very confused then. Thought I was clicking on this thread and ended up in the Brexit Arms!
