Westministenders: Slow News Fake News

RedToothBrush · 09/10/2019 18:36

Things have been slow whilst we are in proroguation, ahead of next weeks Queen's Speech and the EU summit.

We've been in full spin mode, from the likes of the far right and an unnamed source at No.10.

People seem to be waking up to the reality that its highly unlikely we will get a deal now, unless something significant. And No.10 has worked out the NI problem. FINALLY.

Anyway, if you have a little time this week and you are interested in the history of where technology change and fake news meet and how where we are now is merely things repeating themselves, Ian Hislop's Fake News: A True History, is essential viewing.
www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m00095hv/ian-hislops-fake-news-a-true-history

I really feel strongly this is stuff that should be being taught in schools somehow as its what protects us from extremism.

One of the few fixed points in the current universe is the total untrustworthiness of Arron Banks. If hes saying something different from usual there will be some corrupt angle.

RedToothBrush · 10/10/2019 08:12

Oh banks hasn't turned. He's just very good at propaganda and pretending he's turned.

OP posts:
lonelyplanetmum · 10/10/2019 08:30

Where is all this 'he is turning' rumour for Arron Banks coming from? I know he has apologised for the xenophobic tweet about Merkel. But an apology isn't enough is it when its part of a pattern.
Don't think he ever apologised about wanting freak yachting accidents for Greta Thunberg which is equally despicable?

Same old misogynistic theme of targeting both older and younger women. Why do these types of men hate women so much. I also find it odd people like him and Farage stoke hatred for foreigners yet both choose to marry foreign spouses. I feel it's all linked psychologically in some way hating women, hating foreigners etc. Probably deep down they dislike themselves or something. So much bile has to come from somewhere.

Surely there are increasing numbers of Leavers who look at Banks, Cummings, Farage, JRM, Johnson and have doubts about their esteemed founders and leaders?

Timeywimey10 · 10/10/2019 08:31

it is weird. My mum always used to "joke" that my father hated Liverpudians, the Irish and catholics, and she was all 3!

DGRossetti · 10/10/2019 09:00

Because you have "good" foreign and "bad" foreign. Same as you have "worthy" disabled and "unworthy" disabled. Or worthy war heroes (i.e. dead) and unworthy ones (who had the incredibly bad judgement to survive).

If you can find any homogenous group, and invent a distinction based on fuck all, then you're a politician my son. (Or a preacher).

Johnson’s choice: rule of law or misrule

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/oct/09/the-guardian-view-on-johnsons-choice-rule-of-law-or-misrule

Even if the courts compelled compliance, forcing their hand would allow Mr Johnson to portray himself as a Brexit martyr.

He might then be in a stronger position to run as the tribune of the people, defying a Europhile establishment in parliament and the judiciary.

That is the stuff of authoritarian subversion, and should not appear in the repertoire of democratic politicians.

Mr Johnson is not yet at that point, but it is within sight.
.....
.But the prime minister’s choice reveals a more profound conflict at the heart of Downing Street.

He has chosen a strategy for fighting an election that requires behaviour unsuitable for running a government.

BigChocFrenzy · 10/10/2019 09:24

Lewis Goodall@lewisgoodall

Reading through yday's damning ‪ElectoralCommUK‬ report on the European elections.

As a result of confusion which partly arose from the govt dragging its feet,
we'll never know how many EU citizens (who were entitled and wanted to vote in the UK) were deprived of the opportunity.

Westministenders: Slow News Fake News
DGRossetti · 10/10/2019 09:35

Seems to be a typo in that

we'll never care know how many EU citizens (who were entitled and wanted to vote in the UK) were deprived of the opportunity.

Fixed it for you.l

lonelyplanetmum · 10/10/2019 09:39

He has chosen a strategy for fighting an election that requires behaviour unsuitable for running a government.

This is so pithy and true- so the rest of the Tories both voters and MPs need to expel him and the ERGers.

JeSuisPoulet · 10/10/2019 09:46

I only managed the tail end of the last thread so apologies if the Banks comment was way off - had a quick google and see it is just a half arsed apology re the Merkel tweet Hmm

A picture of him has sparked curiosity into the male belt wearer; since when do men wear a belt underneath the beer/food/gluttony belly? How does that even work? (sorry for tangent)

cherin · 10/10/2019 09:47

jesuispoulet i read that fb page and it’s tragi-comic but a bit exaggerated. I did the permit back in March and yes, it took rummaging into a tray to find the Pritt stick and handwriting what looks remarkably similar to a ration book...but it lasts for 3 years and it costs only 5.5£. And I suspect if you go with an old photo they’ll glue it anyway.
Having said so, this sounds a bit like the way the German Jews were consoling each other when they were progressively limited and given orders to wear star...you know, you can take each little step in isolation, it’s the overall effect and the underlying principle which is wrong...

Poor Syria. Poor, poor Syria. And Kurds. And poor all those Turks that are not Erdogan supporters, I know so many amazing people, with great culture, big warm harts, illuminated minds. They must feel it, too.

dontcallmelen · 10/10/2019 09:52

PMK with flowers, thank you as always Red & everyone Cherin I totally concur poor poor Syria/Kurds etc

So the truth is now crawling out of the woodwork. Sunlit uplands were a mirage?

EXC: So.%

has finally said it - the entire 'bucaneering Britain' #Brexit narrative is based on a fallacy.
The much anticipated free trade deals don't outweigh costs of barriers to trade with EU from #Brexit 1/Thread

PerkingFaintly · 10/10/2019 10:01

I'm not going to boost Banks by looking, but from what I read, he re-tweeted the xenophobic image when he "apologised".

If so, the "apology" was just an opportunity for him to reach a bigger audience.

The whole point of material like that isn't to reach the our rational minds, but our subconsciouses. Many of the news outlets didn't show the image so as not to boost it – so he did it himself.

Bodoni · 10/10/2019 10:06

Hostile environment is back -
twitter.com/the3million/status/1182203372574822402
Secretary of State @BrandonLewis confirms that EU citizens in UK WILL be subject to full immigration enforcement and liable to removal if they miss Settled Status deadline in exclusive Interview with @StefanieBolzen in Germany's @welt

twitter.com/robfordmancs
This will mean Dutch, German, Polish,Spanish born pensioners being thrown out of their homes, denied healthcare, deported in the middle of the night after decades living here. That will happen 5 yrs from now unless there is fundamental reform of Hostile Environment policies.

prettybird · 10/10/2019 10:13

@PhilipHammondUK has finally said it - the entire 'bucaneering Britain' #Brexit narrative is based on a fallacy

That's why I always refuse to describe them as brexiteers as that chimes with their deluded self-belief as "buccaneers" Hmm I always refer to them as Brexiters (distinct from Leavers, many of whom were conned and/or voted because of issues unrelated to the EU and/or never expected a hard or No Deal Brexit, let alone considered the impact on the GFA Sad). They're lucky I don't always refer to them as Brexshitters.

DGRossetti · 10/10/2019 10:14

Hostile environment is back

At what point did any non-moron think it went away ?

DGRossetti · 10/10/2019 10:14

That's why I always refuse to describe them as brexiteers

Fair enough. There are plenty of other words to chose from ...

Bodoni · 10/10/2019 10:21

I do apologise for being a moron, DGR.

prettybird · 10/10/2019 10:25

I try to retain a modicum of politeness as refer to them simply as brexiters Wink

I'll not give them any more kudos than that. And brexit and brexiter are now swearwords in my lexicon Angry

DGRossetti · 10/10/2019 10:41

I do apologise for being a moron, DGR.

shrug

I'd be more interested to know why you thought the hostile environment had been eased ? Nothing I have seen, read, heard, or experienced has suggested that is in any way the case.

Bodoni · 10/10/2019 10:51

I could do without the hostility, DGR. It’s unhelpful. Sajid Javid is on record as saying he was against the hostile environment and it seemed temporarily to have eased - Patel of course is ramping it up again. Brandon Lewis’s announcement seems to be making it official and specific.

"The Prime Minister has promises to keep. This would break the promises made by Boris Johnson, Michael Gove and Priti Patel personally - and guarantee a new Windrush on steroids, however well settled status does."

BigChocFrenzy · 10/10/2019 10:58

I hope Hammond is right on the power of the law
Worst case is BJ / Cummings don't intend to go around the law, just ignore it and forcibly block any consequences, "people's willy" etc

I think / hope they are too early in the process of dismantling democracy to get away with that

  • unfortunately for the miniTrumps and good for us: their planning is shit and their timing is awry

However, if they ever win a working majority ....

Lewis Goodall@lewisgoodall

@PhilipHammondUK to @adamboultonSKY:

"I don't care what they're saying in Downing Street.
It's just bravado.

There's no way around the Benn Act."

LarkDescending · 10/10/2019 11:05

people’s willy - did that come from the Arcuri disclosures? Smile

Delighted to see Laura K getting slated on Twitter for suggesting (again) that the rule on not frustrating enacted legislation is “untested law”. Parroting Leadsom. FFS.

Thanks for the link. Placemarking as need to watch it for some research I'm doing. Many thanks Flowers
