Westministenders: Slow News Fake News

Things have been slow whilst we are in proroguation, ahead of next weeks Queen's Speech and the EU summit.

We've been in full spin mode, from the likes of the far right and an unnamed source at No.10.

People seem to be waking up to the reality that its highly unlikely we will get a deal now, unless something significant. And No.10 has worked out the NI problem. FINALLY.

Anyway, if you have a little time this week and you are interested in the history of where technology change and fake news meet and how where we are now is merely things repeating themselves, Ian Hislop's Fake News: A True History, is essential viewing.

I really feel strongly this is stuff that should be being taught in schools somehow as its what protects us from extremism.

Evening all! waves

I’m a long time lurker but have been avidly reading these threads since December last year and am completely reliant on them to cut through the Brexit bullshit and try to piece together what a clusterfuck of a situation we are in (apologies, Brexit makes me very sweary!!)

A huge thank you to Red and all the regulars for your sharp, committed, incisive and witty commentary.

I have just noticed something that has given me a tiny feeling of optimism - I have been checking the Fail online now and again (mainly because I know my DF, who is in all other respects highly intelligent and a real gentleman, reads it occasionally and has begun spouting sound bites which breaks my heart - so am trying to forewarn and forearm myself!) Every time I had looked on the home page previously there was a prominent “X days until Brexit” ticker counting down to 31 October, which gave me the rage every time I saw it.

But - it now seems to have disappeared!!! Could this mean the Fail is no longer quite so confident? Or have I completely missed something?

Page Marr Keith.

A strange sense of relief that we are crushed up against something that looks almost like... reality. The calm before shit gets real.

Hi Zig feel your pain re parents and the Daily Mail it’s like some sort of OAP handbook for Brexit.

BackInTime · 09/10/2019 20:03

@ZigAZigAhh I do the same thing to prepare and forearm myself for discussions with ILs who are avid readers of the gospel according to the DM. Gives me the rage although explains a lot of people's thinking.

Thank you, Red.

Hoo I interspersed reading 'Travellers in the Third Reich' with Georgette Heyer. It was great, illuminating, useful - but I definitely found it easier to read in bursts.

borntobequiet · 09/10/2019 20:11

PMK from far away. WiFi keeps dropping off which is a bore.
Thanks Red, once again; thanks all.

Just got back home.

Re Damian Green and the Johnson manifesto pledge:- of course Johnson can say Tories will not campaign on No Deal for a GE, as we will have already left by then, won't we PM?

Did you ask that crucial question Damian??? Hmm

BigChocFrenzy · 09/10/2019 20:24

From last thread:

Sam Coates Skyy@SamCoatesSky

Number 10 aren’t commenting tonight on the manifesto promise Damian Green thinks he got earlier.

Understand the thinking in No10 is that no options off the table,
might yet have to be no deal in the manifesto,

and there’s a suspicion Damian Green over interpreted his meeting.

But but does that mean we’re not leaving on the 31st if they’re talking about election manifestos?

ArseDarkly · 09/10/2019 20:40

Evening all. Ok to come in? I've brought a cat.

Couple of pp mentioned a tiny sliver of hope in the air and I was coming on to say the same thing - hard to pin down exactly but..e.g. today LBC reported several times about a 'poll of polls' indicating that majority of uk backs remain and has done for some time, i haven't heard them reporting stuff like that before.

Also, like Zigah, I noticed a change in the Fail last night - instead of the usual Corbyn bashing or silly bollocks about Johnson being resolute they were making a big splash about the Arcuri scandal. Interesting...

If I was Bojo I would be working on one of my famous flip-flops about now...

Why is it all of a sudden being reported that the polls, since 2017, have measured a greater number of Remainers than Leavers? Why has this never been mentioned before ...
