Westministenders: Slow News Fake News

RedToothBrush · 09/10/2019 18:36

Things have been slow whilst we are in proroguation, ahead of next weeks Queen's Speech and the EU summit.

We've been in full spin mode, from the likes of the far right and an unnamed source at No.10.

People seem to be waking up to the reality that its highly unlikely we will get a deal now, unless something significant. And No.10 has worked out the NI problem. FINALLY.

Anyway, if you have a little time this week and you are interested in the history of where technology change and fake news meet and how where we are now is merely things repeating themselves, Ian Hislop's Fake News: A True History, is essential viewing.

I really feel strongly this is stuff that should be being taught in schools somehow as its what protects us from extremism.

The WA is a hostage to and a prize for the Far Right. It's many things - but what it isn't is a compromise.

Hope everyone caught the Brexitcast Disco Remix: Saturday Night Leaver

Hard Brexit (no deal) is receding as we speak. That is the intelligent view now after three plus years of bullshit TBH

Everyone knows it now, but it just takes someone with a bit of intelligence to see it.

Varadker is speaking for everyone, both UK and ROI and EU now. I do realise he is rep for EU because ROI is actually in the EU and is protecting EU institutions.

UK is on its own now and has no real allies in this anymore. Apart from the Orange one and maybe Putin.

Would be good to get back to normality and no fear of the consequences of no deal.

But since it may not happen, I wonder where all the billions for the prep for exit went. That is where we should look now. Qui bono?

lonelyplanetmum · 12/10/2019 15:45

After my bad nights sleep I've not lots of DCs friends over so I'm not up to speed. BUT

Guardian is saying Johnson has U-turned now conceding that there could not be a customs border on the island of Ireland??

Should something this big be this last minute and pendulumy?

lonelyplanetmum · 12/10/2019 15:46

'Got' ( not 'not') lots of DC friends over.

JeSuisPoulet · 12/10/2019 16:02

I'm still massively wary - how are they going to prepare all of the documentation and get this through Parliament in 20 days? We know BoZo won't ask for an extension. It all feels fake and made up for the feelz.

Outsomnia · 12/10/2019 16:10

Again, how much of our money/taxes has been spent on this shitststorm up to now? A few billion I reckon.

It is just so mad, and in a search for what?

Anyway, I think a bit of a breather is in order. Even the hard Brexiters go home and have their dinner/tea/get on with life and never think about it much really. Just like the rest of us.

thecatfromjapan · 12/10/2019 16:18

The idea of having a referendum in NI and not the rest of the UK is also a disaster. Democratically, it would stink.

dreichsky · 12/10/2019 16:19

UK is on its own now and has no real allies in this anymore. Apart from the Orange one

The orange one is not our ally, he is an exploiter in waiting. He does not have anything approximating at our best interests at heart.

thecatfromjapan · 12/10/2019 16:20

I agree, Outsimnia.

No Deal is No More.

It probably Never Was - all about terrorising MPs and UK to accept slightly re-jigged May's WA.

Which means, of course, vast sums of money have been spent in a manner that verges on the criminal.

Hoooo · 12/10/2019 16:36

3 years, billions of £, the rise of the far right and for what!!??

Outsomnia · 12/10/2019 16:39

@thecatfromjapan

Very sadly billions were and are being spent on this very odd project.

When it ends, there are many recipients of this largesse and they will not care and it will all be justified ha fkn ha.

What a total debacle. Honestly. But we as taxpayers have contributed to a total mess and will continue to it. Well it is outside our power to say how our taxes are spent really.

I am disgusted sorry everyone, but hope there will be some middle ground now.

Hoooo · 12/10/2019 16:40

Agree with you out

Total clusterfuck.

ListeningQuietly · 12/10/2019 16:41

How is no deal avoided?
With another three month festering sore of an extension?
Which will be wasted in squabbling like the last one was.
Then what ?
A general election which Boris will win if Corbyn is still fudging the Labour message?
And if Corbyn wins he wants a "new deal" that he will then campaign against ???????

Sorry but this is all navel gazing.
It needs to be resolved finally next Saturday.
WA or Revoke.

ArseDarkly · 12/10/2019 16:49

No one is going to vote for revoke.
No one is going to allow no deal
An extension is unavoidable

nothing to do with navel gazing - just the facts.

Boris will win a GE will he? According to the news last night it's doubtful he'll even get elected in his own constituency and they'll probably have to stand him somewhere else. That's if he's not been forced to resign over the Arcuri scandal

thecatfromjapan · 12/10/2019 16:50

Anyway, in case you've missed it so far:

Here is a link to Rhodri Morgan's Brexit Disco concept album ('the antidote you needed for the crisis you never wanted'):

NoWordForFluffy · 12/10/2019 16:50

I agree with Listening and BCF. We have to look at the reality of the situation, not our ideal scenarios. So WA through and get an administration in which goes for BRINO.

ArseDarkly · 12/10/2019 16:51

And, of course, there is no such thing as it'being 'resolved finally' next Saturday or any other day

Outsomnia · 12/10/2019 16:56

I dislike my taxes being used for an ideology that is just that really, UK head of the world. And a potential dictator to the EU.

I would laugh, but I won't, I will just hope that reality will prevail for all of us now.

Am I in a minority?

ListeningQuietly · 12/10/2019 16:56

Boris will be given Chris Chope's constituency
he'll be fine even if the rest of us are nadgered

Hasenstein · 12/10/2019 16:59

So WA through and get an administration in which goes for BRINO.

How do we ensure that, though? What if Johnson gets back in and pushes for the hardest possible terms? No SM, no CU, no FOM, no crime data cooperation, just a bare bones FTA palatable to the US.

NoWordForFluffy · 12/10/2019 17:02

He's going to no deal on us if this doesn't go through. That's the position we're in.

We need to look what's happening and act accordingly.

Outsomnia · 12/10/2019 17:07

To my mind anyway, Leaving EU has zero benefits.

Open to correction, but I haven't heard of even ONE positive for leaving.

Have you?

ListeningQuietly · 12/10/2019 17:08

Hasenstein
At the moment a HUGE part of the population believe that Project Fear is just that.
Nothing will convince them that Brexit is a bad thing until it happens.
Once it does happen they will howl and be shocked that it was what they had been told.
And whoever is the Prime minister at the time will be toast.
So lets make sure that is Boris and the ERG.

As then come a GE, whoever promises to rescue us from our own Brexit stupidity
by groveling to the EU for a Norway style deal
will get elected.
BINO

thecatfromjapan · 12/10/2019 17:08

No, Outsomnia, you're not.

There is real pressure building to have a PV and stop Brexit.

That is partly why there has been such mad pressure to get the re-rogered WA through.

The UK no longer wants Brexit.

You know, it's been a long, hard climb to get to this point. Oddly, one of the main impediments is, indeed, Corbyn and his closest advisers. 🤷‍♀️ There's a manic push going on in Labour at the moment.

I can't understand the fatalism on this thread when it's clear that we are very, very close to a PV.

And, yes, Johnson is very aware that his time is running out and the stakes for him couldn't be higher.

If he gets his version of May's WA through, he probably gets to evade prosecution, get given a safe seat, win a GE, and deliver what his dodgy backers want - Brexit and the final form of that Brexit.

If he doesn't get that deal through ... things look incredibly bleak for Johnson.
