Westministenders: Slow News Fake News

RedToothBrush · 09/10/2019 18:36

Things have been slow whilst we are in proroguation, ahead of next weeks Queen's Speech and the EU summit.

We've been in full spin mode, from the likes of the far right and an unnamed source at No.10.

People seem to be waking up to the reality that its highly unlikely we will get a deal now, unless something significant. And No.10 has worked out the NI problem. FINALLY.

Anyway, if you have a little time this week and you are interested in the history of where technology change and fake news meet and how where we are now is merely things repeating themselves, Ian Hislop's Fake News: A True History, is essential viewing.

I really feel strongly this is stuff that should be being taught in schools somehow as its what protects us from extremism.

Oh, I see DGR has already posted.

I can't keep up with these threads...

BigChocFrenzy · 11/10/2019 19:52

If this ever gets to an HoC vote, I can imaging JRM flouncing off and sitting as a BXP MP

It would give him time to concentrate on HIGNFY, which is his true metier
The problems began when people thought he was a serious politician

tobee · 11/10/2019 20:09

Except JRM will see himself as part of The Ruling Classes, which Brexit Party definitely is not.

HoneyandSpice · 11/10/2019 20:11

the problems began when people thought he was a serious politician

Let's just leave that hanging.

cherin · 11/10/2019 20:11

what’s hignfy?
:-)

I’m not holding my breath, but I’d rather be here hoping a deal can be found, than despairing and thinking about riots at the local Sainsbury. So I really really hope it doesn’t all crash down tomorrow, and that they get into the blippin’ tunnel and come out with ‘something’. And then we can work with the ‘something’ and make it better, with the rest of our lives ahead of us.

ImNotYourGranny · 11/10/2019 20:14

That Boris/Russia story is beyond shocking. Shock

HoneyandSpice · 11/10/2019 20:18

So many shocking revelations. Enough for most people to be ousted from their jobs in society in general, never mind being in charge of the country.

lonelyplanetmum · 11/10/2019 20:22

hignfy

Is 'have I got news for you.'

Re Johnson I remember feeling shocked before that May couldn't trust her own foreign secretary. But I thought it was because he was indiscreet rather than anything more sinister.

lonelyplanetmum · 11/10/2019 20:27

Oh and for lurking leavers who think that it is fake news that Putin likes interfering in our elections I'm just leaving this here as a reminder.

publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm201719/cmselect/cmcumeds/1791/179109.htm

It's old news, but no one seems to care and leavers still think that isolating ourselves is a superbly good idea.

Blimey falimey, that hit map is pretty damning

cherin · 11/10/2019 20:31

Thank you listening, I know the show, nice

I also watched the Ian Hislop documentary with TeenS, and found it very useful.
There’s really good quality podcasts and shows in the bbc current offer and archives...every time I hear a ‘real’ Brit* criticising it I feel like screaming “no! You’ve got no idea how bad it is somewhere else! Don’t take it for granted and cherish it”.

  • as opposed to me being a ‘new’ brit, or settled migrant
JeSuisPoulet · 11/10/2019 20:36

Oh come on you lot, let's look at the positives!
We will have enough gas for the first winter outside the EU! Huzzah!

There is enough hot air in the Houses of Parliament to last at least a decade Grin

tobee · 11/10/2019 20:46

Just looking at John McDonnel interview with Alastair Campbell for GQ, he seems to say that 1) Jeremy Corbyn would stand down if he doesn't win the next election. 2) that the next Labour leader should be a woman (not sure if advocating an all woman short list probably with penises also knowing Labour these days) and recommending Angela Rayner Hmm.

I suppose it's all academic though, if Len doesn't say yes.

HesterThrale · 11/10/2019 21:21

If this is right, I’m not really liking the sound of it.

tl:dr Johnson's is a much HARDER Brexit than May's

lonelyplanetmum, thanks for that link. I've been following bits of the DCMS committee investigation into fake news, but hadn't read the report.

An extract for anyone who hasn't clicked through:

Disinformation and 'fake news': Final Report Contents
6 Foreign influence in political campaigns
It is interesting to note that, as of 30 November 2018, the online Government response to our Report received a total of 1,290 unique page views and the PDF has been visited 396 unique times from the website.265 In the month following its publication, over 63% of views of the report online were from foreign IP addresses (whereas, on average, 80% of viewers of Reports are UK-based), and of these, over half were from Russia. Furthermore, two-thirds of viewers were new visitors, meaning they had not visited the parliament.uk website before (in comparison with the majority of Reports, where only around 30% are new visitors). The following table shows the unique page views by city, illustrating this high proportion from Russia:

City..............Page Views
1. Moscow 19.79%
2. London 17.8%
3. St Petersburg 2.94%
4. Cambridge 2.25%
5. Kyiv 1.9%
6. Sheffield 1.56%
7 Bristol 1.38%
8. Edinburgh 1.37%
9. Novosibirsk 1.21%
10. Ottawa 1.21%

Oakenbeach · 11/10/2019 21:28

Mark Francois’ latest tweet... Hmm

Hunger strike Day 34 I just dreamt I led the Spartans at Thermopylae but with worse odds. A narrow pass closely resembling the channel tunnel was spewing forth wave after wave of Europeans, all with Leo Varadkar's head. The 80 brave ERG in sandals and togas, vanquished them all

NoWordForFluffy · 11/10/2019 21:35

Hunger strike?! WTAF?

He's such an objectionable twat.

TheMShip · 11/10/2019 21:39

It's a joke account Fluffy

However this from Alberto Nardelli (buzzfeed europe I think?) looks interesting. Supports the view that British position has moved.

NEW: details of today's Brexit briefing to EU27 ambassadors — according to a diplomatic note of the meeting, diplomats were told:

  • UK proposals to date have not been the basis for a negotiation
  • It has been made clear to the UK that any solution cannot be time limited and must be legally operative. Virtual solutions are unacceptable
  • Barclay understood the EU position, diplomats were told
  • In his meeting with Barclay, Barnier pushed back against the suggestion that the UK had made concessions so the EU should too
  • He told Barclay that attempts at blaming the EU were not helpful
  • EU's chief Brexit negotiator also said that current consent proposals ["Stormont veto"] were not acceptable, but following talks between Johnson and Varadkar other options were possible
  • Barnier also said that the agreement negotiated by PM May should be the reference point

Additionally, I understand that for logistical reasons EU27 ambassadors could meet again on Sunday evening instead of Monday.
