Westministenders: Slow News Fake News

RedToothBrush · 09/10/2019 18:36

Things have been slow whilst we are in proroguation, ahead of next weeks Queen's Speech and the EU summit.

We've been in full spin mode, from the likes of the far right and an unnamed source at No.10.

People seem to be waking up to the reality that its highly unlikely we will get a deal now, unless something significant. And No.10 has worked out the NI problem. FINALLY.

Anyway, if you have a little time this week and you are interested in the history of where technology change and fake news meet and how where we are now is merely things repeating themselves, Ian Hislop's Fake News: A True History, is essential viewing.

I really feel strongly this is stuff that should be being taught in schools somehow as its what protects us from extremism.

tbh, I never believed her plan was possible

BigChocFrenzy · 10/10/2019 20:26

I'm busy all morning - the thread may fly !

Nick Gutteridge@nick_gutteridge

Tomorrow's breakfast meeting between Steve Barclay and Michel Barnier now looking like a make-or-break moment.

Will we see talks collapse over croissants or a deal sealed with Danish?

TheABC · 10/10/2019 20:34

I am sceptical until something concrete is reported in the German press. I also agree with @BigChocFrenzy that the numbers are just not there. Corbyn will not save Johnson's electoral prospects.

However....if Johnson does cobble something together, he may get it to pass if it goes back to the country alongside an alternate option. At that point, you could argue the referendum mandate has been satisfied and a fresh one is being sought for the new direction we want to go in.

BigChocFrenzy · 10/10/2019 20:41

ABC The numbers may be there - I haven't totted up where I estimated what each group would do.

imo, many MPs would seize on any WA - that is actually agreed with the EU - to avoid No deal

I just don't know if there are enough of them, especially Labour Leavers and the saner ERGers like Gove

Inniu · 10/10/2019 20:46

On the documentation if there is a deal can the EU just do a Blue Peter and pull out one they prepared earlier and sprinkle some consent glitter to finish it off.

They offered this years ago

prettybird · 10/10/2019 20:46

Suspect the SNP will be continue to vote against it on the basis that any "deal" is not as good as the deal we currently have with the EU, in which Scotland voted to stay - even though they don't want No Deal.

And if NI gets to stay in the CU/SM, then that will just add to their annoyance - even though there are special circumstances with NI and the GFA.

But I'm not really sure.

BigChocFrenzy · 10/10/2019 20:53

That's a point, innui

Barnier may have a whole safe to himself down in the EU Commission cellar nestling next to Juncker's collection
containing drafts of all the feasible deals !

Sorry, inniu

TheABC · 10/10/2019 20:55

Grin @ Blue Peter Glitter.

Fair enough, on the numbers. I still don't think Corbyn will allow his MPs to vote for Johnsons Deal as it's effectively handing him the next election on the "we got Brexit done" platform. The SNP and Cymru will be unhappy at the special treatment (it's still going to hurt Welsh and Scottish farmers), whilst the Lib Dems just want to Revoke.

BigChocFrenzy · 10/10/2019 20:58

mother This morning - in the gym ! - I suggested we were partly copying Germany in the early 1930s, but were trying to pull away from what followed.

kingsassassin · 10/10/2019 21:00

I don't think Corbyn would vote for Johnson's deal - but what happens if labour abstains rather than votes against on the basis that they're not going to vote for it, but don't want to be blamed for no deal?

Inniu · 10/10/2019 21:01

@Motheroffourdragons
I don’t think they are talking about NI leaving the UK customs union I think they are effectively talking about special status for NI.
Part of the UK customs union but with customs as well as regulatory checks in the Irish Sea and a rebate in NI if the EU tariff is higher than the UK tariff.

Customs border in Irish Sea emerges as the only basis of a Brexit deal

thecatfromjapan · 10/10/2019 21:05

Agree with Mother. It would ---> break up if the union.

It would enrage the unionists in N Ireland (which is worrying ) & I can't imagine how the people of Scotland would feel.

Honestly. Poor Scotland. I feel outraged in Scotland's behalf. What an outrageous thing all of Brexit has been to drag Scotland into.

thecatfromjapan · 10/10/2019 21:08

And to recap, just as a reminder: it's all for the Conservatives.

All for a tiny section of the Conservative vote.

What a catastrophe visited on the UK.

And it becomes clearer and clearer that any mandate for this has gone.

What a disaster.

thecatfromjapan · 10/10/2019 21:09

Inui The unionists will see it as a betrayal of NI as being part of the UK.

dreichsky · 10/10/2019 21:12

I also don't see how the Union could survive a NI only status.
Logically I understand the need to protect the GFA.
But emotionally I just feel hoping mad.

bellinisurge · 10/10/2019 21:25

Tbe Conservative and Unionist Party are connected to the Official Unionist Party not tbe DUP.

BigChocFrenzy · 10/10/2019 21:29

Yep, once the effects become apparent, we need to keep reminding people that this clusteruck was created by and for the Tory party

dreichsky · 10/10/2019 21:35

Whenever I get too ranty about the injustices being done on Scotland London born and raised DH points out his very large home city also voted against it as did most other English cities.
He goes on to say at least the Scots have options about what they do next.

thecatfromjapan · 10/10/2019 21:36

I see no way that message will get through, BigChoc.

Not with our media.

BigChocFrenzy · 10/10/2019 21:36

London Indy !
It'd be a brilliant city state

thecatfromjapan · 10/10/2019 21:37

As a Londoner, I'm beyond furious.

But Scotland is just a different order of outrageous.

BigChocFrenzy · 10/10/2019 21:38

The version in the Irish Times looks like an NI-only backstop with a transparent figleaf covering its blushes
