Westministenders: Slow News Fake News

RedToothBrush · 09/10/2019 18:36

Things have been slow whilst we are in proroguation, ahead of next weeks Queen's Speech and the EU summit.

We've been in full spin mode, from the likes of the far right and an unnamed source at No.10.

People seem to be waking up to the reality that its highly unlikely we will get a deal now, unless something significant. And No.10 has worked out the NI problem. FINALLY.

Anyway, if you have a little time this week and you are interested in the history of where technology change and fake news meet and how where we are now is merely things repeating themselves, Ian Hislop's Fake News: A True History, is essential viewing.
www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m00095hv/ian-hislops-fake-news-a-true-history

I really feel strongly this is stuff that should be being taught in schools somehow as its what protects us from extremism.

Aaah, the late great Alan Coren
what would he make of today's "news"

I also wonder how Robin Day would manage Nigel Farage on Question tIme

DGRossetti · 10/10/2019 16:20

The only thing wrong with Private Eye (these days) is that the print is so bloody small, and I struggle to read it even with my varifocals.

Funnily enough I noticed a while back the typeface had been slightly tweaked to be more legible.

With my futurologist hat on, there are 2 big things that have to happen in tech now before we see any significant advances in consumer products.

  1. batteries. The more we make smartphones etc necessary for modern life, the longer the batteries are going to have to last.

  2. User Interface. As 50 year olds who first picked up an iShiny in 2010 (yes there are some) become 60, and current 70+ year old users find they use their devices more and more, then someone, somewhere is going to have to make screens and buttons somehow functional with dodgy eyesight and motor control.

The latter is a constant source of frustration for DW, because as someone with fucked eyes and motor control, she's basically already there (and has been for years).

Anyway, on with the thread Grin

JustAnotherPoster00 · 10/10/2019 16:22

And time and time again, occasional posters come on and ask questions on these threads and are completely ignored as they are not regular enough to warrant a response (and yes this has happened to me on numerous occasions under different name changes)

I thought that in the beginning but I dont think its the case, the threads sometimes move to fast or by the time a poster who would be able to answer the question the thread has moved on, so dont feel like you're being ignored just post when you want, I always do and I know I;ve become an irritation to some, irrelevance to others but I always try and give my Momentum cult magic grandpa worshiping take on things to those who care and to those who dont, also found some of my views have softened since being here, its also quite easy to make assumption by pp's that their name isnt recognised because we get plenty of ploppers here who fake innocence about the situation, if that makes any sense 23Squared

Basilpots · 10/10/2019 16:26

Anyone else had the Government advert for ‘The British Business Bank’ ?

Small businesses appreciate all the help we can get but to be honest we’d rather you just didn’t crash the economy, or increase red tape, and create barriers to trade, or disrupt our supply chains. Perhaps then we wouldn’t need the financial assistance you are offering that no doubt somebody somewhere will make a tidy profit out of.

Sorry rant over.Angry

DGRossetti · 10/10/2019 16:27

Toast ?

Breakfast ?

Basilpots · 10/10/2019 16:37

Sorry 23squared I always answer when I can but a lot of the time I’m clueless too !

In truth I’ve always wondered about Private Eye too but last I checked they we’re not online (thanks for the link Listening) it’s more effort to go and grab one and it’s not often I bother going anywhere the magazine stand in WH Smith’s anymore as most stuff I just read online. In fact the only time I read a magazine is in the hairdressers these days.

Horehound · 10/10/2019 16:37

Yep I totally agree. Or you're seen as too stupid to understand and get arsed responses to legitimate questions.
It basically is like eastenders and if you aren't part of the core cast, you're cast to the loser table in the canteen.

Basilpots · 10/10/2019 16:38

Also enough with the white writing on a black background my eyesight just cannot deal with it !!!

Basilpots · 10/10/2019 16:39

Readers Digest is that still a thing ?

ListeningQuietly · 10/10/2019 16:40

Basil
I get all my magazines on subscription as it reduces the price massively and I like reading print articles in bed.
They drop through the door each week / fortnight / month / quarter and I stay up to date with what interests me.

dreichsky · 10/10/2019 16:42

I swap my name a lot so am never going to be a 'regular' but I honestly don't think it matters.
I like the range of views on here, even if being a centrist isn't too everyone's taste.

DGRossetti · 10/10/2019 16:43

Readers Digest is that still a thing ?

Not sure - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reader%27s_Digest suggests yes ?

DM bought me an annual subscription after I moved to Brum (I devoured her copy as a child). In fact it was when I started receiving two copies - from two separate subscriptions - that we could date the dementia which was to take her so cruelly and quickly Sad.

Basilpots · 10/10/2019 16:45

Good point Listening gives you something to look forward too.

DGRossetti · 10/10/2019 16:49

I get all my magazines by subscription and with perfect timing last weeks Eye was undelivered (first time ever).

They've despatched a replacement that "should" be with me by tomorrow.

I'm guessing it was misdelivered and a neighbour is having a chuckle ...

Basilpots · 10/10/2019 16:54

Who was it yesterday with questions about providing services ?

A raft of emails have just dropped into my inbox here’s Spain as I think that was the one asked about.

Basilpots · 10/10/2019 16:59

It’s a cruel disease DG.

prettybird · 10/10/2019 17:17

23squared - a few of us did answer you today Smile

But as Justanotherposter says, sometimes the thread is moving so fast it has moved on to other topics.

A few of us looking at you today DGR Wink are on occasion getting a bit tetchy as we do get a few "ploppers" (again, as Justanotherposter mentioned) who only post and run to stir.

That wasn't the case in your question and I hope you've now had enough answers to improve your understanding Smile

Emotions are running high as we stare into the abyss before us Sad

DGRossetti · 10/10/2019 17:23

Techy ?! I was livid ! (Doesn't really work, does it ?)

Anyway, total thread derail, and report me if you like, but I appear to have had something in my eye these past few minutes ....

NotaRealLawyer · 10/10/2019 17:25

Evening all. Can't say as a lurker/occasional poster I've had a " not in the gang" vibe on here. If regulars have been posting for three years or more, then of course there will be closeness and banter. Doesn't bother me. It's quite funny at times.
I've not the where with all to do something like this myself, and appreciate it, as I do the Trump threads.

On a lighter note...

The Liverpool Echo ( daily paper) is running with this headline.
www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/liverpool-news/boris-johnson-meets-luxury-mansion-17063731

Inside Boris Johnson's Brexit mansion where Coleen Rooney celebrated her 21st birthday party Thornton Manor has already been the podium of high-stake gatherings

(P.E. used to run a Murkeyside column back in the day, but then I remember Richard R. Ingrams, Paul Foot, et al)

Focalpoint · 10/10/2019 17:26

The Taoiseach is saying that he says a way to get a treaty done by the end of the month - but many a slip twixt cup and lip.

Irish media reporting this as likely that NI staying in customs union.

NotaRealLawyer · 10/10/2019 17:27

Gosh, sorry to cross post with DGR there.
Syria on my mind a lot today Sad

Apileofballyhoo · 10/10/2019 17:27

23squared

It really is the case that the threads move awfully fast and not every comment gets commented on. I read all the comments but rarely respond because usually the thread has moved on as I'm a couple of hours behind. Red and Bigchoc and DGR always answer if you ask them a question with their name in it.

I think myself it's a good thing when anyone asks a question even if it is something it would have been wise to know before casting their vote in 2016. Because it's always good to engage and seek understanding, particularly in these dangerous times. Everyone should be asking questions, and figuring out the difference between propaganda and fact.

prettybird · 10/10/2019 17:27

Jeremy Hunt is still exuding a sense of privilege and an attitude of "Don't you know who we are?" and "It is YOUR fault for having miscalculated the UK's resolve" even though he is no longer in Government.

WTF does he mean by "Of course there have been many equally serious mis-steps on the UK side, but a fair reading of history will surely record these moments of inflexibility as two serious miscalculations" ? Confused

There is also an implicit threat in his letter about the "risk" of referendum a new Prime Minister Confused - or more of the same from BJ Hmm

It doesn't seem very "statesman-like" on his part. Hmm

But there again, that's par for the course with Brexit: trashing reputation of the UK and the members of the Brexit-fiasco governments (Cameron, May and BJ). Angry

mrslaughan · 10/10/2019 17:28

Do I have to read that letter? Because I got to the second paragraph and thought my head was going to explode.......
Bunch of spoilt arseholes who think that the world should revolve around them......
