Westministenders: Slow News Fake News

Things have been slow whilst we are in proroguation, ahead of next weeks Queen's Speech and the EU summit.

We've been in full spin mode, from the likes of the far right and an unnamed source at No.10.

People seem to be waking up to the reality that its highly unlikely we will get a deal now, unless something significant. And No.10 has worked out the NI problem. FINALLY.

Anyway, if you have a little time this week and you are interested in the history of where technology change and fake news meet and how where we are now is merely things repeating themselves, Ian Hislop's Fake News: A True History, is essential viewing.

I really feel strongly this is stuff that should be being taught in schools somehow as its what protects us from extremism.

"Nigel Farage and the Brexit party have voted against a European parliament resolution calling for stronger EU action to counter election meddling and Russian disinformation." Hmm

Do they want more Russian meddling & disinformation. ? Confused
Rhetorical - maybe best not to answer

I've just had a look at BJ's Facebook page. Shock

Is his penis ego really that small inadequate that he needs so many bots to affirm how "brilliant" he is? Confused

prettybird · 10/10/2019 14:53

...now need to go and wash my Facebook account Wink

mrslaughan · 10/10/2019 15:01

@DGRossetti if that comment is about me and my family - then you are quite wrong.... people can read information, seek out information and come to the conclusion that Corbyn is not the shade of politics they want - it does not make them ill-informed. It also does not push them to the other extreme......politics is about a rainbow -

mrslaughan · 10/10/2019 15:07

On another - I don't know how to describe it - depressing?laughable note? Radio 1 had an epileptic on, essentially complaining that she was being descriminated against with regards to loss of health benefits in Europe....... is the British public really that naive, that they don't realise that the rest of the world has to get travel insurance when they go on Holiday......

prettybird · 10/10/2019 15:19

I do find it..... interesting Hmm that there is suddenly so much angst about the fact that the EHIC cards will no longer be valid Confused

Where were the BBC stories on main news bulletins about the difficulties that people with existing health conditions would face 6 months ago, a year ago, 2.5 years ago? Angry

TokyoSushi · 10/10/2019 15:22

Statement from Johnson/Varadkar meeting. Polite, leaves the door open, but hard to see how there will be a deal by next week...

Nice how they're being described as the 'Cheshire Talks' Thornton Manor is 100% in Merseyside my friends!

prettybird · 10/10/2019 15:28

That is sooooo neutral. Nothing has really changed. BJ continues to confuse diplomacy, reasonableness and politeness with acquiescence and agreement Confused

Varadkar, Barnier et al will not close any door on the UK - but at the end of the day, they will not compromise the founding principles of the EU for a departing country.

TokyoSushi · 10/10/2019 15:38

I completely agree@prettybird

Gingerninja4 · 10/10/2019 15:38

People should not been relying on EHIC cards anyway as they won't repatriate if needed and can't see why was moaning as epilepsy can be covered on medical insurance even at not much extra cost in may cases

bellinisurge · 10/10/2019 15:39

Tokyo- pretty sure Johnson wouldn't have wanted to be "in Merseyside " after the twatty things he's said about the city on the other side of the water.

I have subscribed to Private Eye since I was at University.
I do not always agree with it
but it often turns out to be right ....

DGRossetti · 10/10/2019 15:48

I think Wirral was Cheshire prior to Local Council reorganization in 1974?

When I moved to Brum, in the late 90s, I was struck by the fact that (some) locals were still banging on about a reorganisation that happened in 1974.

And, 20 years later, they still are ... despite the fact that at least 3 generations have passed.

But I have never once ever heard anyone pine for £.s.d. to return Hmm

DGRossetti · 10/10/2019 15:58

I have subscribed to Private Eye since I was at University.

I used to sneak a read of a friends brothers copy in school (admitted a bit disappointed initially that the title did not betray a feast of scantily clad ladies ...) and it became required reading at 6th form (where a copy was held in the library, along with NME, Melody Maker and Sounds).

Quite aside from the humour, it frequently runs snippets of stories that are never reported anywhere else. And even when "wrong" (as with Bananaballs) it turns out to be right.

Pretty certain it was the first (and maybe only) journal to cover the Lord Lucan mystery (we could always ask Zac Goldsmith Hmm). It also dug forensically into the Lockerbie incident and there are a few facts it reported which I have never seen commented on (to confirm or deny) elsewhere, suggesting there was a lot more to it than met the eye.

The French have their own version - which predates PE by half a century: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Le_Canard_encha%C3%AEn%C3%A9

Just remembered that the 6th form library also kept a copy of "Socialist Worker". Or rather it had a copy - one of the upper 6th would sneak it onto the shelves Grin

ListeningQuietly · 10/10/2019 16:09

My school had Punch but not the Eye or any music magazines

yolofish · 10/10/2019 16:12

The only thing wrong with Private Eye (these days) is that the print is so bloody small, and I struggle to read it even with my varifocals.

Not convinced by the idea that Varadkar and the Fatberg got on like a house on fire, I think Varadkar is too polite to burst out laughing and say "you WHAT?!"

DGRossetti · 10/10/2019 16:13

My school had Punch

gracious me - now there's a blast from the past. DM used to like that. And there was a brief TV show in the 70s I was allowed to watch.

Let's take a minute to remember Alan Coren ...

23Squared · 10/10/2019 16:13

DGR - you have no idea of my background - I was merely asking a question - a fairly innocent one at that. Yes, I could go and pick one up - except last time I did that I was roundly criticized and abused which due to my Aspergers has meant that I wouldn't dare do it again. The anxiety is too much. I was simply asking what the general consensus was - much like most of this forum about MANY subjects. As for the way it was asked? No idea what that means.

The intellectual superiority some posters show on these threads is horrible. You need to realise there are people behind keyboards. Not everyone has the privilege of an excellent education. Not everyone has time to keep up with things. Not everyone has the ability to not get confused in these confusing times. Yet people who show a different opinion are criticized or see the threads about people asking for more info on Brexit and the nasty really? After three years? replies they get. You have no idea what is going on in their lives that they haven't been able to process stuff so far. Not everyone is even in the UK - so may have missed nuances. And time and time again, occasional posters come on and ask questions on these threads and are completely ignored as they are not regular enough to warrant a response (and yes this has happened to me on numerous occasions under different name changes)

But, y'know, Peace and love and all that.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 10/10/2019 16:14

I am also a bit fed up with the demonisation of TB by the Corbyn fan club

My main problem with Blair doesnt stem or only include Iraq, allthough he should be held accountable for that, but its the way he started the culture of a constituency for life mindset and the fact like all Tory governments he kicked the housing, NHS, welfare can down the road and were suffering because of that now, but I voted for him not happily I admit but I did, but he should have vanished and stayed the fuck vanished because he gives me the absolute rage, more so than even Camerons hammy spoon face
