Brexit Arms - Pop Up

time4chocolate · 09/10/2019 18:16

Well I’m going to have a crack at this Landlady business and I’ve opened a pop up pubSmile.

Rules are:
Anything brexit related is up for discussion and even not Brexit related if you feel the need (so if you want to discuss Haemoroids that’s ok too Wink).

I’m ok with a bit of arseyness (it’s an emotive subject) but if you go full monty in here I reserve the right to withhold all alcoholic beverages.

I have reserved a quiet table for MNHQ if they want to pop in for a quiet drink (Happy Hour is 6-7pmSmile).

Haven’t properly caught up yet with today’s Brexit news yet but looks like we are finally facing end game, that said still plenty of days left for high jinks and holidays.

Anyone have any views on how they think the next few days will play out are welcome to voice here.

First drinks are on the house WineWine 🍻 Cheers

Some positive noises coming out after the Johnson/Varadkar meeting. Fingers crossed...

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 10/10/2019 15:49

What positive noises? I've read the statement and can't see that anything has changed since their last talks. And the one before that, and before that etc

Hester54 · 10/10/2019 15:58

jasjas1973 If stuff from NI gets into Ireland, they could easily stop it from leaving, why not have a invisible border in Ireland, it seems very easy, it’s not as we are landlocked with Europe

Notthebloodymustardcushion · 10/10/2019 15:58

Well, these days, I consider anything that doesn’t constitute them metaphorically telling each other to “go fuck yourself” as positive.

Notthebloodymustardcushion · 10/10/2019 15:59

I think we have transcended normal politics now, we have to take what scraps we can get... Grin

bellinisurge · 10/10/2019 16:32

True that @Notthebloodymustardcushion

Well apart from that undermining the Irish economy and all Irish exports . As well as messing with the single market generally and the GFA, it's fiiine 😂😂😂😂

😂
Yep!

ghostofharrenhal · 10/10/2019 17:31

Things seem to be looking hopeful again for a withdrawal agreement?

ghostofharrenhal · 10/10/2019 17:34

Though of course even if an agreement is reached it might still not get through Parliament...

I'm a Remainer and I just want something to be decided (but not No Deal!)

HateIsNotGood · 10/10/2019 17:56

oooh - mine's a pint of best and a packet of twiglets, one for yourself and put one in for mustard please. Looks like a decent crowd frequents here, and good rumblings from the Varadkar/BJ meeting today.

Notthebloodymustardcushion · 10/10/2019 18:12

Why thank you Hateisnotgood, that is very kind! Mines a red tonight please! Wink

Wine cheers my dears!

Ireland's Leo Varadkar says he "sees a pathway" to a Brexit deal in the coming weeks, after talks with UK PM Boris Johnson

Hester54 · 10/10/2019 18:17

poster bellinisurge Please explain further, there would be no hard border between the countries, I assume Ireland have customs to check no EU imports, how would it mess with the Irish economy and their exports,

darkcloudsandrainstorms · 10/10/2019 18:22

@bellinisurge

It cannot be normal to post on brexit all the time.

You are wasting your life.

ArseDarkly · 10/10/2019 18:25

No way a deal is coming - it's just Johnson trying to serve up the old cold sick again and asking the EU to pretend it's something new and delicious to save his stupid face. If they really had managed to find some new 'pathway' after 2 hours chat there would be far more buzz around it.

Amazes me that Johnson can get away with doing exactly the same thing as May - trotting here and there, going into meeting after meeting with no new outcome - and while May was flayed alive for it people still insist that Johnson is 'trying'. I'm not falling for it.

I'll have some kettle chips if you've got them and a whisky mac for my cold. Cheers! Smile

bellinisurge · 10/10/2019 18:34

Thanks @darkcloudsandrainstorms . I give a shit about NI. Do you?

time4chocolate · 10/10/2019 18:36

Hate 👍🏻I’ll take you up on that drink thank you, like ArseDarkly I too have a cold and a Whiskey Mac is just what the doctor ordered Smile.

Cheers all 🍻🍻🍷🍷

@Hester54 if Ireland's exports to the EU can't be trusted because shit might have crept in via NI - where there is no All Ireland customs union- Ireland 's exports are fucked. Why should the Irish economy take the hit?

dirtyrottenscoundrel · 10/10/2019 18:44

Nothing that gets said on here will make the slightest difference to anything. This is mumsnet. You post as if what you say will change the governments mind.

So yes, you do waste an awful lot of your life on here.

bellinisurge · 10/10/2019 18:47

I have MS, dear. Perhaps you'd like that.

bellinisurge · 10/10/2019 18:48

Or maybe you can cure it and get me out more.

54321go · 10/10/2019 18:50

it is really rather simple once actually understand that the vWA as presented by Theresa is just 585 pages listing all the treaties between the UK and the EU.
It sis not a 'deal' as such but simply the rules that both the EU and the UK 'play' by. Similar to published rules for cricket or tennis.
The WA and the rules for cricket do not 'say' what the 'outcome' of a game will be, but simply how it is played.
The 'deal' part comes in, afterv the WA (rules) are signed, at which point the UK and EU negotiators sit down and write the PD political document, which simply says which of the 'rules' the UK would like to keep, and which they want to drop.. All this has been known for nearly 2 years. ALL posible 'outcomes' are possible, using the existing WA as a starting point but then with the addition of the PD, the eventtual plan can be thrashed out. Of course the ERG would like more treaties dropping particularly as it helps their disaster capitalist plans. More gentle plans could be taken where more of the ties with the EU are retained, which might prevent some of the worst effects of leaving.
Failure to understand this relatively simple process is causing most of the problems. Sign the WA and get true negotiations started, there are 585 pages of stuff to wade through, and they are all legally binding treaties that will need serious consideration. Use the time wisely.

Leo looks pretty buoyant. I am cautious not to read too much into this, but right now, it’s nice to have a glimmer of something. It’s been a while.

Radio silence from Downing Street too, which I think is possibly a good sign based on past days!

MockersthefeMANist · 10/10/2019 18:55

The only way a deal is possible is if BJ shafts the DUP and agrees to keep NI in the CU, or in some contrived arrangement that pretends it isn't in the CU when it is really.

With an election coming and the Paisleyites not spectacularly popular at the moment, the Supply & Confidence arrangement may have run its course.
