Brexit

Brexit Arms - Pop Up

time4chocolate · 09/10/2019 18:16

Well I’m going to have a crack at this Landlady business and I’ve opened a pop up pubSmile.

Rules are:
Anything brexit related is up for discussion and even not Brexit related if you feel the need (so if you want to discuss Haemoroids that’s ok too Wink).

I’m ok with a bit of arseyness (it’s an emotive subject) but if you go full monty in here I reserve the right to withhold all alcoholic beverages.

I have reserved a quiet table for MNHQ if they want to pop in for a quiet drink (Happy Hour is 6-7pmSmile).

Haven’t properly caught up yet with today’s Brexit news yet but looks like we are finally facing end game, that said still plenty of days left for high jinks and holidays.

Anyone have any views on how they think the next few days will play out are welcome to voice here.

First drinks are on the house WineWine 🍻 Cheers

It appears that the term Prime Minister can be used, as long as it wasn’t derogatory

Not quite what is being said. Costello assumed, in 1948, that the term could be used as it was in the constitution. The constitution defines the Taoiseach as being the prime (i.e. main) minister of the government and states the name given to the person in that office is Taoiseach.

Additionally, that was 71 years ago. Language, custom and practice has evolved since then.

The UK is going to look stupid again if they agree a new deal with the EU but it is rejected by parliament.

bellinisurge · 11/10/2019 19:42

If he gets enough exhausted Labour MPs to vote for it, he doesn't need ERG or DUP.
This lockdown stuff could well be a pathetic ruse on his part to get into the so-called "tunnel" of negotiations then refuse to make the necessary consessions .
There is no one he won't shaft.

Bearbehind · 11/10/2019 19:42

The UK is going to look stupid again if they agree a new deal with the EU but it is rejected by parliament.

That hasn’t stopped them before

Voila212 · 11/10/2019 19:49

I agree Bearbehind also if a deal is agreed upon and doesn't pass through the HoC how will the EU react. They were losing major patience with negotiations before the outcome of the meeting with Leo and Boris. I can't see hardened brexiteers agreeing to this but I have seen quite a few anti NI posts and comments all of a sudden. An article in the Telegraph yesterday basically said NI was a burden and not risking Brexit for.

Voila212 · 11/10/2019 19:50

and not worth risking Brexit for.

whyamidoingthis · 11/10/2019 19:51

FFS it does not matter.. grow up!

It is a symptom of the lack of respect for the Irish that has partially led to the mess you are currently in. The assumption that Ireland doesn't matter, that we would just roll over and do whatever is necessary to give you what you want.

The over-inflated sense of self-importance resulted in an assumption that it would be the easiest deal in history, that "they need us more than we need them" etc. You may not think words matter, but words have caused an awful lot of the troubles in the world.

For the purposes of discussions on here or in the media, Irish PM is perfectly acceptable

To you perhaps.

The British look even more fucking stupid when trying to pronounce words in other languages that no one understands anyway.

A lovely attitude to a language that you forbearers tried to eradicate,

Burpsandrustles · 11/10/2019 19:55

I really don't think...

Will this make us look stupid even enters into any UK negotiator minds or deal makers minds. I sincerely hope it does not.

This is more important than people looking stupid.

ContinuityError · 11/10/2019 19:55

In these circumstances, while the legal title of the holder of the office is the Taoiseach, the alternative descriptions—Head of the Government, Prime Minister, Príomh-Aire—which are employed in the Constitution can also be used, provided they are not used in any way derogatory of the office, the holder of the office or the Irish language

I think that’s fairly clear, even if it was in 1948.

And I suspect that in 1948 the British attitude to Ireland was a lot more derogatory - Éire was often used by the British.

Burpsandrustles · 11/10/2019 19:57

Whyam

Your making some good points, Im sorry I also called him pm Blush

I wonder maybe a sole thread about this... Would help clarify your points I think they are getting lost on here.

whyamidoingthis · 11/10/2019 20:01

I think that’s fairly clear, even if it was in 1948.

It was Costello's opinion, not a legal interpretation of the constitution. He was referring to Irish newspapers. I assume it was in relation to the "protestant" newspapers who would have been traditionally of a unionist viewpoint.

whyamidoingthis · 11/10/2019 20:05

@Burpsandrustles - Im sorry I also called him pm

It's only disrespectful when it's done deliberately, despite knowing it is incorrect and with disregard for the preferences of Irish people.

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 11/10/2019 20:09

Have a 🐟

ContinuityError · 11/10/2019 20:16

So you’re arguing that a Taoiseach in 1948 confirming that using the term “Prime Minister” was acceptable, when the British government was insisting on using the name Éire, is invalid because it wasn’t a legal ruling?

OKaaaayyy.

Bearbehind · 11/10/2019 20:18

*It's only disrespectful when it's done deliberately, despite knowing it is incorrect and with disregard for the preferences of Irish people.(

This is a predominantly British website. People don’t use the Spanish, German, Chinese, Japanese etc actual word, in their language, for their version of a PM so why would they use the Irish word in every day conversation.

It’s this kind of wilful argumentitiveness and taking offence which perpetuates any problems.

Burpsandrustles · 11/10/2019 20:21

I think another thread would be devoted to this.... And make the issues really clear. It would reach more people.

@Bearbehind

Calling Varadkar the Irish PM isn’t the end of the world - people understand it

No it’s not the end of the world.

But if someone asks you to use the right word, would it similarly be the end of the world just say “sorry, I meant Taoiseach” for politeness sake and to show some respect to the other person?

If you called me “Mrs” and I replied that I’d rather be called “Miss”, would you argue, refuse to do it, and tell me that it doesn’t matter?

Well, you might if you were complete arse, but I’m guessing the answer to that question is; no you bloody-well wouldn’t.

Bearbehind · 11/10/2019 20:46

gonna you are completely overreacting, as is why

Leo Varadkar isn’t on here asking people to refer to him with a certain title.

I can’t be arsed with the Ms, Miss or Mrs brigade either to be honest.

If that’s the most you have to worry about then crack on.

The point me and others are making is that ‘Irish PM’ is understood by everyone and only offensive who chose to make it so.

Miljah · 11/10/2019 20:47

whyamidoingthis you definitely need your own thread about titles.

Bearbehind · 11/10/2019 20:49

you definitely need your own thread about titles.

Which no one else will read / reply to 😂

Bearbehind · 11/10/2019 20:50

So, back to the actual important shit - how does BJ think he gets a sea border deal through?

Miljah · 11/10/2019 20:51

Oh Bear 😉

bellinisurge · 11/10/2019 21:27

"wilful argumentitiveness"
Kettle, may I introduce you to Pot.

Bearbehind · 11/10/2019 21:33

bellini pot, kettle and black is quite apt from you. You do love to give things a poke with your sharp stick.

I have never split hairs over someones title.

I only argued with you about the fact that a sea border wasn’t on the table so trying to tell posters on here ‘they just needed to agree to it’ in order to secure Brexit was pointless.

It now appears to be on the table so is worthy of discussion.

And I still don’t see how it can get the numbers to get through parliament but time will tell.
