Westminstenders: Pro Rogues

The Pro Rogues plan to prorogue again this week.

The Queen might be challenged to sack Johnson. Or he might be forced to extend.

It depends on which newspaper you read. Either way it strikes you that no one really knows what's going to happen...

Completely OT, but I've just had an irrational rage with a website (Royal Mail to name and shame) which has decided I can't spell my own name. Well surname. Which is like a French "LeCreuset" name - capital "L", capital "C". As soon as I typed it in, the website "helped" me remember it's spelled "Lecreuset".

Which would be funny, but that's a bug/feature I squashed 20 years ago when Channel Island customers of our software complained. (It's curious how quickly someone complaining about a statement with £000,000s on it gets attention).

Anyway I'm taking it personally. I refuse to be treated like I'm back at school again.

(Just on a hunch, I also notice it doesn't like "McKay", "MacHeath", or "fforbes-Hamilton" ....)

Christ - and that's our supposed national mail carrier ? I wonder when the grown ups will get back ?

People with "funny names" will get the rant ...

I didn’t realise that the EU was a peace keeping force as well, ( I thought that was the UN ) can they turn water into wine, they seem to do everything else

When you have a vested interest in each others countries trade and infrastructure there seems to be a reluctance to bomb the shit out of them, why do you think there has been piece in Europe for so long Hester?

Sorry for your loss temp Flowers as with everything else time will ease the loss and I hope that time passes as quickly as it can for you

JustAnotherPoster00 · 07/10/2019 10:40

*Peace

My brain can fuck off with its use of the wrong word that sounds the same

ImNotYourGranny · 07/10/2019 10:52

I didn’t realise that the EU was a peace keeping force as well, ( I thought that was the UN ) can they turn water into wine, they seem to do everything else"

I suspect that your sarcasm is a mask for your ignorance. The original motivator behind what is now the EU was to "make war not only unthinkable but materially impossible"

QueenOfThorns · 07/10/2019 11:13

My brain can fuck off with its use of the wrong word that sounds the same

Mine keeps doing it too, @JustAnotherPoster00 (I’m going to put it down to Brexit stress, otherwise I’ll have to accept that I’m just getting old). I nearly sent DSis a message that said ‘Can you please find out what DN once for her birthday?‘ Blush

And his generation get so stereotyped as selfish leavers which is just not so. My father was about the same age as yours, although he died more than ten years ago. He was a total European, and was all for the freedom of movement - he even worked in a European country for 3 years and loved it. I do not know what he would have made of this mess.

So many stereotypes. My parents also of this generation as are my ILs

Dad, wealthy ex-banker, Tory voter (though once upon a time a Liberal). Former committed Norway leaver now thoroughly and irreversibly radicalised.

My mum, ordinary pensioner, ex-teacher, very middle England, voted leave because talked into it by her MP but now wants it all to stop (floating voter: Green in the EP elections)

My ILs, as working class as they come, neither educated, both from poor Irish Catholic families in Stoke on Trent. But staunch remainers, to the extent that FIL would have been with me at the last PV march if he hadn't just had a mild stroke. Also floating voters but will be LD at the GE I suspect (unless there's a better tactical alternative).

I hate the way all older people are characterised as leavers ... even in the "most Brexity" demographics about 30% voted remain.

BigChocFrenzy · 07/10/2019 11:17

Another Remainer boomer here
< 🤛🏼 to peregrina and other older Westministenders >

PMK

ListeningQuietly · 07/10/2019 11:36

Many baby boomers are remainers - most of the ones I know are
but sadly many people who feel left behind are getting more so.

I just popped my odd new analogy for Brexit onto the last thread
Its a baby being delivered ....
its a new life starting at the pooing and yelling stage ....

If I can remember how to log into my online Economist account I'll get the whole letter (and check the comments which I think will be peachy)

Flowers Temporary A long life hopefully well lived

OffTheShelfElf · 07/10/2019 11:44

I agree with several people above - it's just not helpful to stereotype age cohorts. My boomer parents and their friends are passionate remainers, whereas my grandmother (who'd be 100 if she hadn't died a few years ago and who was bombed out in the war) would, I suspect, have been a leaver.

derxa · 07/10/2019 12:07

ARoomWithoutADoor · 07/10/2019 12:21

PMK, thanks to RTB and all regular posters

(no pic but have recently taken delivery of a rescue dog in the hope it will help my dd with ASD who misses our old dog dreadfully)

sorry for your loss Temporary

SwedishEdith · 07/10/2019 12:23

Sorry for your loss Temporary.

missclimpson · 07/10/2019 12:25

Yup boomer remainer here too. I never understand people talking about how our generation didn't understand what the war was really like. They clearly didn't grow up with parents with PTSD. 😨
I realise that as a migrant pensioner that I am in a remainer bubble here in France, but I don't know anyone who voted leave. All of our UK family are fervent remainers.

BigChocFrenzy · 07/10/2019 12:34

Lewis Goodall@lewisgoodall

In today’s lobby briefing PM’s spokesman spoke gravely about how Extinction Rebellion protestors must abide by the rules and if they don’t police will use “full force of the law”

One journalist asked if they stuck to letter but not spirit of law would they be punished? Hmm

spokesman laughed it off.
But this is the problem when a govt even flirts with bending the law.
Everything falls apart.

Hester54 · 07/10/2019 12:45

JustAnotherPoster00 So nothing at all to do with a more civilised nations that had seen what the death and destruction of two world wars. After the EU was only formed in 1993

After the EU was only formed in 1993

Is a little like saying the Premier League invented football in 1992.

prettybird · 07/10/2019 13:00

I see that the Scottish court case to compel BJ to write the request for an extension letter had failed.

Campaigners' bid to get courts to order no-deal Brexit delay fails http://news.sky.com/story/campaigners-bid-to-get-courts-to-order-no-deal-brexit-delay-fails-11829971

I'm not too concerned as the court case itself compelled the government to release the document stating that it would send the letter (even if BJ then contradicted it Confused) as part of its defence.

So if it does then refuse to send it, then they'll have misled the court and back to court we go Grin

prettybird · 07/10/2019 13:07

In essence (and I've not read the actual judgement, only the reporting of it), the Court dismisses the case because it said that it didn't need to force BJ to send the extension letter (as per the requirements of the Benn Act) as he has already said that he would, according to documents lodged with the court.

Because BJ is sooooo trustworthy Hmm

Basilpots · 07/10/2019 13:09

@Dusty01 That the court is taking the Government at its word that it will send the required extension letter. If they don’t they will find themselves back in court.
