Have to make this quick.

Johnson has made an 'offer' to the EU. Let's stress this isn't a deal because they haven't agreed.

The EU have made kind noises about it but will say no thanks.

The UK are expecting this, and despite what's been said apparently are expecting more negotiation on this.

The DUP and the ERG seem to be on board with the proposal meaning in theory Johnson might have numbers to get through parliament. Except its not a deal so this is currently meaningless.

Parliament is prorogued again from next week with the Queen's Speech the following week.

I think Bonnie Greers characterisation of the GFA as a truce, rather than a settled treaty is staggeringly significant. If for no other reason than if you agree with it (and it's hard not to) then you have to admit that as truces go, it's been pretty spec fucking taculalry successful.

How many truces have held up for 20 years in world history ?

DGRossetti · 05/10/2019 18:41

Seen elsewhere, but cheered me up Grin

There's a (long standing) event tonight in Glasgow celebrating 20 years of Nicola being in politics, so that might be a reason?

The "All Under One Banner" demonstrations are also working hard to make it not all about the SNP: it is a coalition of Indy supporting organisations.

BigChocFrenzy · 05/10/2019 19:11

Ah, thanks, pretty Obviously the Glasgow event in her honour would take priority for her
So, a genuine schedule clash

Danetobe · 05/10/2019 19:13

My DH was a post doc and decided to turn down further funding in 2017 in U.K. to move to a Danish uni due to risk that EU27 uni collaborator research groups would pull out of future applications. in 2018 his old group was pulled from their research consortium because of the risk that a U.K. Uni on the application may pose. His old departure has not taken on any new PhD students since 2017 and may (probably will) have to downsize further. It's such a shame. The whole sorry tale.

Danetobe · 05/10/2019 19:15

NB - his old group was ace and literally world leading. It's turning a tad threadbare now.

JeSuisPoulet · 05/10/2019 19:17

Welcome back 54321go - it is I, LonelyTired Wink
Glad you are safe and well, I was asking after you a few threads back.

Slowly getting through the last episode of Gogglebox - I honestly feel most of the country is sane when I watch it so far, so I hope they don't all suddenly go BeLeaver on me now!

Voila212 · 05/10/2019 19:20

DGRossetti that stood out to me too. It was a truce more then an agreement, both sides had to make huge sacrifices in the name of peace. After watching the BBC documentary on the Troubles I can't fathom how anyone got either side to the table and I can't imagine how the people of NI ever healed after years of civil war, learning to live together after all that happened . Now Boris and some leavers are willing to screw it all up. Most of all I hate how some dismiss and belittle what the GFA did.

Hoooo · 05/10/2019 19:27

The young people now toting guns and calling themselves the new IRA have grown up knowing nothing but peace.

BigChocFrenzy · 05/10/2019 19:32

The DUP was the only major party that refused to support the GFA at the time
and they have stayed opposed to it

They have been heavily involved in Brexit all along, with the sole aim of wrecking the GFA and hence - they thought, wrongly ! - postponing Irish reunification.

In fact, this Brexshit saga has only hastened the time when a majority in NI will want a United ireland

mrslaughan · 05/10/2019 19:41

Gogglebox last night cheered me up..... when Boris came on, I very nearly turned over - couldn't bear the thought of hearing how amazing they thought he was..... it was so cheering that nobody had a positive thing to say about him!!!!

And none of them were positive about brexit.

JeSuisPoulet · 05/10/2019 19:41

Gogglebox hasn't disappointed! Grin
The BoZo effect still going strong!

BigChocFrenzy · 05/10/2019 19:42

KLAXON !
EU sources saying UK did ask Hungary to veto

No word of any specific inducements
So unless Trump offers them something, I doubt they'll do it as a favour to BJ
Shows he's trying every trick though.

When you think about, why else would there be a Hungarian delegation at Downing St ?
especially atm when BJ would be concentrating 100% on Brexit

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2019/10/04/boris-johnson-pins-hopes-hungary-veto-brexit-delay/amp/?twitterr_impression=true

However, on Friday night, EU sources said senior ministers had reached out to the Hungarian government**
for assurances it would veto any request for a delay.

< "senior ministers" is either EU being tactful not naming BJ himself, or BJ trying to insulate himself by using minister>

RosinaAlmaviva · 05/10/2019 19:44

Driving on the A1(M) today near Hatfield, saw one of those big illuminated signs:

FREIGHT TO EU MAY CHANGE NOVEMBER 1. CHECK PAPERS.

Looked like a note the government had written to themselves.

Hoooo · 05/10/2019 19:49

Yeah.
Funnt that, innit, BCF

lonelyplanetmum · 05/10/2019 20:01

Leclerc I also wondered where you'd got to, best wishes for a speedy recovery with excellent medical care! x

JeSuisPoulet · 05/10/2019 20:06

Rosina I keep doing that drive recently and keep seeing the same signs - so vague! As if that is worth the taxpayers money on preparing for no deal and all just for freight! When will we see a proper campaign?!

ListeningQuietly · 05/10/2019 20:07

Rosina
Those motorway gantry signs are utterly insane
and a total waste of money
because those who need to understand the most
pay the least attention

Ellie56 · 05/10/2019 20:15

I've seen those signs on the M1 too. Hmm

NoWordForFluffy · 05/10/2019 20:17

About as much use as the 'prepare for Brexit' vague adverts. Angry

Lonelycrab · 05/10/2019 20:18

The signs are all over the m3 too. I do a little one finger salute every time I see one but sort of aim it at the foot pedals so I don’t get into some kind of road rage situation Grin

Flowersleclerc, missed your posts and hope you rest up well

thecatfromjapan · 05/10/2019 20:26

Hello, 54321. So sorry to hear of your troubles (the stroke and the stress behind it). Much, much love to you. 💐

DGRossetti · 05/10/2019 20:34

Half !

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/brexit-farmers-protest-business-agriculture-referendum-final-say-a9058621.html

More than half of farms will go bust if Boris Johnson forces through a no-deal Brexit, farmers are warning, as some join the campaign for a fresh referendum.

A deadly cocktail of immediate tariffs, border checks, increased red tape and cheaper food imports from outside the EU will result in the “decimation of UK farming”, a detailed study finds.

“Many industries will suffer, but the industry that would suffer the most serious economic shock will be agriculture,” a former chief economist of the National Farmers Union (NFU) concludes

(contd)

RosinaAlmaviva · 05/10/2019 20:37

I think it's really just BJ taking out ads to say WE WILL LEAVE BY NOVEMBER 1 WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT. Perhaps it reassures his hedge fund friends?

Nevertheless I looked up the guidance for lorry drivers, and learned a new word: cabotage.

Cabotage is the loading and unloading of goods for hire or reward between 2 points in a country by a vehicle that is not registered in that country.
Cross-trade is the haulage of goods for hire or reward between 2 EU countries by a vehicle registered in a different EU country.
The number of cabotage and cross-trade jobs you can do will reduce if there’s a no-deal Brexit.

No shit. However, it looks like permits will still be valid in the EU until the end of the year. After that it's all to play for, and drivers are advised to check back for further instructions. Confused

BlackeyedGruesome · 05/10/2019 20:38

Fucking hell, half?

That is really going to help if there are delays to imported food. Not.
