Westminstenders: The Slow No

Have to make this quick.

Johnson has made an 'offer' to the EU. Let's stress this isn't a deal because they haven't agreed.

The EU have made kind noises about it but will say no thanks.

The UK are expecting this, and despite what's been said apparently are expecting more negotiation on this.

The DUP and the ERG seem to be on board with the proposal meaning in theory Johnson might have numbers to get through parliament. Except its not a deal so this is currently meaningless.

Parliament is prorogued again from next week with the Queen's Speech the following week.

Message from Mike Galsworthy:

If you are also concerned by media reports of our Cabinet approaching Hungary to veto any Brexit extension, thereby collaborating to break British law as set out in the Benn Act... then why not call or email them to ask their intentions? It makes a huge difference when the British public are contacting the Embassy directly.

54321 I'm not aware of any med shortages expected in the E27 because of Brexit

So long as your health insurance remains Ok and you are self-supporting financially, you should be OK in France, whatever happens with Brexit

btw, if you haven't had the flu jab, I recommend you ask your doctor if you can do so

Dmitry Grozoubinski@DmitryOpines (fmr Australian trade negotiator)

Hi, Australian trade guy here.

Our country is 14,000km from Europe and overwhelmingly exports iron ore, coal and gold, mostly to Asia.

Unless ya'll have a secret desert full of minerals and a plan to tow yourselves to just under South East Asia,
our model won't work for you.

We're also working pretty hard to secure an FTA with the EU,
through which we hope to attain a fraction of the full market access ya'll enjoy as EU Members.

Oh, oh, and while I'm here: thanks to a bunch of historical reasons,
Australia enjoys significantly more access to the agricultural markets of the EU through country specific quotas under WTO rules than the UK will under No-Deal.

But.....the Commonwealth Grin

ListeningQuietly · 05/10/2019 17:39

Glad to know that MN posters in real life were there for you 54321
Its nice to have your perspective on the madness back again

ICouldBeSomebodyYouKnow · 05/10/2019 17:39

DGR, BigChoc - those sentiments from Julia G and Dmitry need to be shouted from the rooftops. Some of us think what they say is blindingly obvious and just plain common sense, but if common sense WAS actually common, we wouldn't be in this mess. Angry

prettybird · 05/10/2019 17:41

Suspect some of the closer Commonwealth countries are keener to get working visas Wink do deals with the UK Hmm than Australia and NZ, who have a) worked hard to develop markets closer to home and b) already benefit from reasonable quotas into the EU. [confuse

DGRossetti · 05/10/2019 17:44

(thinks) ...

nah ... Leavers with just shout "project fear" and remainers had already twigged.

I just post to amuse myself, and know that when historians pore over this period, they'll know some of us did get it.

Hoooo · 05/10/2019 17:46

Goodness leclerc! Take it easy xxx
(Its buffy btw!)

MockersthefeMANist · 05/10/2019 17:49

....Thought it rang a bell. Croughton is a US spy base where they intercept your communications and mine. And Frau Bundeskanzlerin's.

They will not be enjoying the scrutiny.

(and now that I've mentioned them, they'll be on here. Hi guys!)

I wonder if Mark Thomas wants to fly over in a balloon ?

MockersthefeMANist · 05/10/2019 17:54

I wouldn't recommend it. Those microwave txers can frazzle your goolies.

redchocolatebutton · 05/10/2019 17:57

there are concerns about some availability of medicines in E27 derived from pigs (heparin and other blood thinners for example) due to swine fever.

Sostenueto · 05/10/2019 17:59

*54321go hope you are better and recovering well.Flowers

prettybird · 05/10/2019 18:06

TiP has been in touch:

"A little anecdote for the Westminsterenders .....

"DH does shows in schools. He does not touch on politics generally but last week as part of his patter he said "but we all hate the idiot politicians on the telly" and the whole year 7 group applauded .....

"Kids are getting very very angry. They listen to Greta and they see politicians ignoring the real issues.

"MSM is reported by older people on £100k salaries who just do not get the real vibe.

"If there is a no deal Brexit I can see the Friday School strikes getting very big indeed."

I agree with her dh. I get messages from ds getting progressively more angry with BJ (not just on Brexit but on climate change). He is concerned that by the time he is in a position to change things (he has big plans Wink but is only 19), it will be too late Sad

SegregateMumBev · 05/10/2019 18:11

I'm paraphrasing The Guardian here, but:

It was the fact that the UK and Ireland were both in the EU that made the Good Friday Agreement possible.

The circle that cannot be squared.

www.sciencemag.org/news/2019/10/split-decisions-how-brexit-has-taken-toll-five-researchers

Very much reflects the overall 'chill' we've observed at my institute regarding science collaborations with the EU. Small scale stuff seems to be ok, but the big programmes are rejecting UK scientists, and recruitment at the postdoc level is a nightmare.

Apileofballyhoo · 05/10/2019 18:17

Hoping you make a quick and full recovery leclerc/54321.

TheMShip · 05/10/2019 18:18

Yes, good luck with recovery 54321go. You've been missed even by the more lurky end of the thread.

Eyewhisker · 05/10/2019 18:21

Not sure if posted yet - brief summary of the week’s developments from the EU side from the excellent Tony Connelly of RTE

www.rte.ie/news/analysis-and-comment/2019/1005/1081246-tony-connelly-brexit/

My take is that Johnson is out of his depth. He does want a deal but has somehow committed himself to getting the DUP on board. No progress has ever been made on pretty much any issue by placating the DUP.

BigChocFrenzy · 05/10/2019 18:27

Terms of the GFA
https://www.britishirishcouncil.org/about/british-irish-agreement

In the preamble before article 1:

"Wishing to develop still further the unique relationship between their peoples and the close co-operation between their countries as friendly neighbours
and as partners in the European Union"

MockersthefeMANist · 05/10/2019 18:29

Those who have worked with him confirm Johnson is a mindless optimist who inisists 'there must be a way' and waves away all objections based on detail and fact.

In all probability, he has no cunning plan. He is just hoping that something will turn up.

BigChocFrenzy · 05/10/2019 18:33

pretty Big Indie demonstration in Edinburgh today
Any political reason NS didn't attend - trying to calm things down until there are more in favour?

www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/oct/05/scottish-independence-supporters-gather-for-edinburgh-march

Scotland’s first minister, Nicola Sturgeon, did not join the event but said she was there “in spirit”.
